FB is swamped with ads and suggestions so it's eliminating itself as a useful thing. I have always despised Xitter because it was so hard for me to follow a conversation. My sister loves Threads, and I also despise it. I have gone there and poked around but don't get it. Insta was fine but I kept getting shit for posting a bunch of photos, like I thought that's what it was all about. Bluesky seems to be pretty vacant right now but I'm only 8 hours in. As I add more people I want to hear from, I figure it will be a better place to doomscroll.
FB's censorship killed much of it for me. FB jail for stupid little things. Ads? That's what uBlock Origin is for. nukes em daid.
Following a convo on Xitter shouldn't be too hard. I generally leave a separate tab open to keep an eye on something that's fast moving, or where I want to read the lengthy post later. And if you've replied to the discussion, the notification lightbulb illuminates if there's an in-line retort to the part of the thread you're in.
Insta for me is pretty much read-only, with the occasional cheering on for the folks I know who post photos of certain remarkable things.
Xitter is interesting from another aspect: if you engage with a political opposite, the algo apparently assumes you want more of that - so it presents more of it from those alternate opinion other voices (you also don't follow!) in your timeline "for you" ! That might be aggravating for some. I don't go out of my way to seek out arguments on Xitter, but may not restrain myself if SOMEONE'S WRONG ON THE INTERNET ! The most valuable thing for me is engaging directly with journalists and subject matter experts. Hugely valuable.
General rule that I've found works very well: Curate carefully who you follow, allow anyone to follow you (unless they are porn bots, or abusive dolts who caen't spel and use ALL CAPS, in every post) .

I opted out of doomscrolling and only use it for smartasses and fun things. It's not a place to get sports scores or even read news propaganda from either side. Using the block feature liberally. Someone trolling or spreading disinformation -> reported and blocked. They've kicked catturd and Laura Loomer off as quickly as they could.
Movie discussion, #FoodSky, #MusicSky and a lower blood pressure and no doomscrolling. That's fine. No reason to do otherwise.

Someone who masquerades as a smartass, but her posts are frequently literate, deep, and impressive. (Except in this case) âªKAFUI ð¬ðâ¬âª@mykafuiohkafui.bsky.socialâ¬
"When I left the house braless I had no idea that I was battling for the soul of the nation. Lincoln would be an apt comparison, yes, but I wonât be the one to make it."
then
"His âSweater Meatâ speech at Arlington wonât soon be forgotten."
TL;DR: I don't currently see a use for Bluesky for me. Time is limited, and Xitter is doing a fairly good job of providing what I am seeking. Unless I start hearing Bluesky actually has a compelling value proposition, it won't be in my travels. For now.

I think the role of any social media, incl Xitter, Bluesky, FB, Insta, etc, is that it needs to fundamentally meet the needs of what you are looking for. If you haven't defined what you are seeking, then it's probable that time and energy will be wasted in finding which of the socials works best for you.
IMO, there's only so much time one can devote to any social, so the value returned needs to be good.
As a news junkie, with a North American political interest, Xitter provides what I'm seeking - instant access to the latest breaking news, in amongst a torrent of news in general, and easy access to plenty of high quality voices from all political angles, discussing said news.
Much less useful, especially in the last 8 or so years, is FB. It was far too general purpose, until I made the change myself, and narrowed my expectations and changed the primary focus of why I use FB. And Insta is rarely useful (for me), and only for a very limited scope.
Discussion forums, those that I participate in, are each also very narrow in focus, some extremely unique. Forums are more a source of info/research and education, than social.
RP's forum is somewhat of an exception. Still very broad / general purpose, with equal parts entertainment & informative. And while there are topics here I have zero interest in and generally don't read, politics on RP, while informative and sometime fun, long remains one topic where there's more noise than signal. And now, post US election, posting might quiet down some. Not expecting any improvement in signal to noise, but post frequency may decline, as they sometimes do. As always, it's an outlet for frustrations.

I have a lot of blocked words, which is great. I have no interest in people's anime sketches, etc. And I just blocked any mention of that orange failed real estate salesman. I'll get my news elsewhere.
what about know rugrats? I often think the example would be a great default. Imagine some kids on the playground playing Red Rover. I got my collar bone broken when I was nine because I wouldn't let the line break. Dang that hurt. I met my best friend Larry that year too. Gun lover. Perfect gentleman. He died in 2005 from some bad cancer stuff. Painted cars all his life. And smoked. Asking for it or not, he didn't deserve it. He was a really good man. Overcame a lot in his life.
Oh, what was I talking about? Oh yeah. Examples. Larry was a loyal friend from the time we were boys until he died. I love that. He was a terrible spieler. I love that too. He was an expert marksman. I loved him like a brother. I miss him. Terrible spieler. Anyway, heartfelt stupid threadjack out...

So I futzed around with Bluesky a year ago just like I futzed around with FB when it was just for college students: Wasn't for me so I didn't stick around. But I went and re-lit my account (SFW, just like here) so post your name I guess, if you want.
I stole the name from the former_member here - dmax801

Not on that...but I joined Post a while back (around Christmas?). It's also far friendlier and has a system of paying for content.
I'm not a great reviewer of social media apps....I use them all for about 5 minutes per month in total. The primary activity for me was tracking beer releases, but since the go-go days of NE IPAs has ended, I'm rarely on.
