Yes, catchers can rarely take their eyes off the ball on pop-ups behind the plate; they wouldn't want to have to worry about obstacles on the field.
Maybe it should be a cage? Or at least a shield of some sort.

Well, the circle is about 40' back and to the side. Not "plenty" but just enough distance that a professional athlete should be able to avoid this. Bregman was probably about 25' from the plate. I'll bet they consider making it a rule that the player can't leave the circle.
Brutal. I never understood* why a player would get so far off the circle. It's not magical protection but everyone else in the area is wearing armor.

There's nothing sacred about being on your teams side if you're "on deck". Why not use both sides for both teams, and put the player behind the batter?
Keeping them in the circle would be a good idea also.

Chicago Cubs third base Alex Bregman suffers multiple facial fractures after being struck in the face by a foul ball while not being in the on deck circle on Sunday.
I told Debbie I was going to post that picture to stick in Scott's eye.
We had a great time at that game.
There was a guy a couple of rows in front of us with a big booming voice that would shout out whenever a Giants player came to bat "Somebody needs to boo this guy!"
By the end of the game, he had our whole section "booing that guy!"
I lost my voice the next day.
Lots of fun and laughs.
I'll have to go to Chavez Ravine some day... I'll let you know when we're going...
