I have some good friends who have a channel. They were very active for several years and considered monetizing it a couple of times. When they did the math it never really penciled out. To stay well placed you have to have a lot of followers and you have to constantly put up content. They found the time it took to put up content on a regular schedule made it a demanding full time job. And even if you were moderately successful the hourly return just wasn't there. They did it for hobby/enjoyment and to have a record of their travels and feel it was worth that. The chances of being wildly successful are in the same realm as professional sports/rock stardom. And if you're not wildly successful you are probably putting in way too many hours for the money you are getting back.
You can do it at hobby level and get endorsements and products out of it though. And if it's something you want to do that's great.
