We played about the forest floor
Underneath the silver maples, the balsams and the sky
We popped the heads off dandelions
Assuming roles from nursery rhymes
Rested on the riverbank
And grew up by and by, and grew up by and by
Frail my heart apart
And play me a little shady grove
Ring the bells of rhymney
Till they ring inside my head forever
Bounce the bow, rock the gallows
For the hangman's reel
And wake the devil from his dream
I'm going back to Harlan
I'm going back to Harlan
I'm going back to Harlan
And if you were Willie Moore
And I was Barbara Allen
Or Fair Ellen all sad at the cabin door
A-weepin' and a-pinin', for love
A-weepin' and a-pinin', for love
Written by someone else!
Does that mean they´re both going back to Harlan?
Funny, she doesn’t sound like she’s from Harlem.
What about Harlan?
And I'm not going anywhere soon :-)
I'm not going back, but will be traveling to Carroll to have Christmas lunch and cocktails with an old neighbor who is driving up from Harlan to Carroll.
i lived in a town called harlan
you had to watch you Ps and Qs, otherwise there could be consequence
Sounds like the opening lines to "Hold On" by Tom Waits:
They hung a sign up in our town
If you live it up you won't live it down
you had to watch you Ps and Qs, otherwise there could be consequence
Back to Harlan? and it’s Goin’
that was my first guess since that's the song title. i think you missed that my question was tongue-in-cheek, but that's ok!
i wonder where she's going.
Back to Harlan? and it’s Goin’
Best year and a half, of my life.
What a great album this was! I can't believe that it's over 20 years old! One of my "desert island discs."
yeah, one of the top albums of the 90s
I am here to declare before all of you that, despite a long, passionate disdain for country music, my recently found love for Emmylou Harris is true and real and makes my life more worth living. Whatever God gave her her gift may rest for eternity. Thank you Bill
same here. her collaboration with Knopfler was fantastic and I absolutely love this song and many of her others. mind and ears open....
Stunning, truly stunning.
And her music is pretty darn good as well...

Naw, you don't want help. Just relax and go with it. I've never been a huge country-western fan, either, but there are so many good artists out there, I'd be crazy to fight against opening my mind and ears to new things. Kudos to you, rulebritannia - your world just expanded. (Cool, innit?)
Was just thinking the same thing, rulebritannia. Wouldn't have listened to this much when I was younger.
Cynaera, your posts have such a positive and open approach that we miss you—not just Lazarus. Keep shining down on us. Still holds true, Some lights just go on shining. Miss you, Cynaera! And thanks for leaving parts of you to keep us company.
Harlan. Probably Harlan, SK Canada since it was written by Anna Mcgarrigle, a Canadian. Could be Harlan KY though, as it has an Appalachian streak.
Since Emmylou is singing about silver maples and balsam (firs) and no sycamores, it is undoubtedly Saskatchewan. That's why every party needs a botanist.

I'd walk on water on a short notice
She said something I never forget.
I'm just wondering to myself.
Will I always need someone to tell me?

I'm going to Radioio.
See ya.
Harlan is a city in Harlan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1745 at the 2010 census and was estimated at 1880 in 2007. It is the county seat ...
Let LL Cool J do this next.

Yeah! Harlem, the country capital of the world.
Thanks for introducing me to this album, Bill. It was in my player for 2 weeks straight when I bought it.
It just gets a sickening high "shopping-mall-music" feel to it.
He needs to move on.
Completely disagree.
Wow. To me, ELH brings out a level of feeling in songs that few of the original artists can touch. I hear much more depth and musicality in her performances that few others of her genre have.

Maybe that's what's always kept me from Emmylou. I hear it, and love her songs, but great songs like these ought to make you CRY! Sob and weep. Emmylou has never made me get choked up.
Absolutely...very interesting and creative departure for Emmylou Harris. Take a look at the producer too...Daniel Lanois...not your typical Emmlou release. The first 5 tunes are is fantastic. Neil Young cameos on this release on "Wrecking Ball". Many other well-known (& respected) artists also appear here. Buy it!!!

WHy hasn't she left yet?
