The Call lead Michael Been's son, Robert Levon Been, is the frontman for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Michael Been was heavily involved in BRMC as their sound engineer and toured with them.
did not know that -- but there's some mighty fine DNA action in those sounds
Had no idea.
I thought this was a Back Rebel Motorcycle Cub original - Thanks for schooling me, RP!

But there is a lot to learn there: think about bacteriophages, coming out from there! The answer for antibacteriotherapies in our elaborated west.
I had a grumpy post about them before because the lyrics seemed like a commercial, but this band does have chops. When the Walls Fell Down is amazing. Did anyone before them think of using the start of the major scale as a riff? I can't think of anybody.
The Walls Came Down
From the excellent album Modern Romans. Be glad you own a copy because it’s very difficult to come by and not available on any streaming service.
How did Al Gore lose the presidency with this song as an anthem? Oh that's right. He didn't. The Supreme Court of the United States elected George W. Bush. The people mourning in foreign lands would have had nothing to do without Bush.
Some people don't like your comment but I give a 10!
just keep listening and Bill will "school" you, as they would say in rural Georgia (US... not that one in Europe).
I say the same thing about all of the European and English music that I have been introduced to on RP. Porcupine Tree, Elbow, John Martyn, The Staves come to mind quickly.
Bill and Rebecca do such a marvelous job. There's no place like RP !
Never heard this before, Iike it, the singer sounds a lot like Pete Townsend.
i agree!
i can't stay in a bad mood anytime i hear this song.
In the sequence I heard, it was Black Rebel Motorcycle Club into The Call. Robert Levon Been (the son) into Michael Been (the father). I'm sure that wasn't an accident.
that's pretty awesome. thanks for letting us know!
On the surface, this song contains a positive, non-cynical, non-political message.
I assume this band typically has an otherwise politically-compliant message in order to be here though, yes?
Yes, absolutely! Was thinking I was the only one until now who thought his voice sounded like Townsend.
I guess some artists need to express deep and subtle thoughts and emotions.
And some need to write political rally intros.
Talk about annoyingly redundant.
Here's to the trolls on the internet
Here's to the crap they rant....

Sounds like something Pete Townsend would write. .
To me anyway. Well minus the slide guitar.
Great obesrvation...
trite meaningless american crap.
keep it up yer arses
there are much better songs on the Call's Reconciled album: Everywhere I go, I Still Believe, Oklahoma... This was on heavy rotation back in college circa 1988.
RP = best Streaming sound on the internet
If there are aliens they are listening!
trite meaningless american crap.

Trite and meaningless aptly describes your assessment.

Text book definition of saccharin music.
Perhaps good for a sporting event or pseudo-religious revival meeting.
I understand the basic appeal, but it's far too repetitious for my tastes, like the Beatles All You Need is Love or maybe a Gregorian chant.

Plus, the song suggests he's telling people, "here's to you, laborer. You get a song. Now get to work!"
This song is excellent. That's really all you can say about it.
nah, its shit
So of course no longer have it. Saw them live in Sacramento, CA, I was so drunk I don't remember a thing. Sigh. Missed opportunities. (And I'm sober now).
First the son, now the father!!! BRMC + The Call!!!!! Brilliant songs!!!!!!!
love them both. this album by The Call was heavy rotation back in college. Jaysus that was a long time ago...
Anyone else notice how much he sounds like Pete Townsend?
heh...at first listen (without checking) Exactly 'who' I thought it was too...

It's amazing how I got to my age without hearing bands like this. Just how much else have I missed?
I was lucky in that I first encountered The Call working their MTV New Music Tour show as a stagehand at an on-campus concert hall at the University of Louisville (Red Barn if anyone is curious) (yes, back when MTV played *music* (I know, right?!?)). The show had the distinction as probably the loudest I had ever worked. Their sound guy actually caused a brownout large enough to trigger alarms at the university's physical plant and public safety offices using the Telarc 1812 Overture for tweaking their PA. Good times, those.
Here's to Michael Been. May he rest in peace. Cheers!
Son and Father
I LOVE RP
I'm really curious as to what this guy thinks "cynical" means... because these lyrics are nearly saccharine.
Umm, WHAT? (translated via Google:)
When Jordan, an experienced 190 operator, answers the call of a teenage girl being kidnapped, discovers that the criminal is a murderer who traumatized her. She then decides to take charge of the case. THANK YOU BRAD ANDERSON
RIP Michael Been.
Sometimes repeat playlists really are wonderful.
Certainly does, and BRMC's version does too
You wrote what I was about to. Here's to everyone for keeping us safe, educated, healthy, and supplied.
Don't forget "The Walls Came Down." Also an excellent tune.
I already liked your comment. But I felt need to also reply. I don't have a reason why, but to quote somebody i heard once say, "I love this song, that's all."
In this song his voice sounds more like Peter Townshend's than it does Daltrey's to me.
My ears hear Richard Thompson, like it a lot.
All the more reason to get rid of cable. No inundation of crap.
I like to think he recited this song when he passed. It would be a fitting epitaph.
I don't that fact was lost on BillG.
Also, I can imagine Dr. Johnny Fever dancing in his chair in WKRP studio to this!
Absolutely!!!
Doesn't matter; sometimes the day truly begins at 6 pm with happy hour.

Agree.
It must have been that the band said "no" to all requests for those decades, cuz I thought this sounded like the perfect beer ad music probably the first time I heard it.
I wonder if you are bringing in your own "stuff" to that assessment. Personally never heard it that way...
Solid 8 for me. Uplifting. Optimistic. Genuine.
If music has power (And I believe it does...) We could use a little more of this kind of message...
I like to think Michael was feeling optimistic after becoming a father (though sonny was 11 when this was written).
"With blessings from above!"
(Honest. I like it. I really do. The guy does sound like Daltrey, though.)
In this song his voice sounds more like Peter Townshend's than it does Daltrey's to me.
Yes, I think you are.
Michael Been died running sound for BRMC, at a show in Holland.
^H at Pukkelpop Festival, Belgium, on August 19, 2010.
BRMC followed by The Call...
the acron fell from a mighty oak and grew to be a dang good tree itself.
