Lyrics:

A deeper shade of soul, yeah yeah
A deeper shade of soul
A deeper shade of soul, yeah yeah
A deeper shade of soul

She don't want my money (What I say?)
And no Cadillac (What I say?)
She just wants my lovin' (What I say?)
And to love me back (Alright)

She's got soul! (That's my baby)
She's got soul!

A deeper shade of soul, yeah yeah
A deeper shade of soul
A deeper shade of soul, yeah yeah
A deeper shade of soul

She'll drink wine in Paris (What I say?)
Sake in Japan (What I say?)
But when it comes to lovin' (What I say?)
Oh, I'm her lover man (Alright)

She's got soul! (That's my baby)
She's got soul!

A deeper shade of soul, what she's got
A deeper shade of soul
(I'm tryin' to tell you about my baby)
A deeper shade of soul, what she's got
A deeper shade of soul (Yeeeaah, my baby)
A deeper shade of soul, what she's got
A deeper shade of soul

A deeper shade of soul, what she's got
A deep shade of soul (Yeeeaah, my baby)
A deeper shade of soul, what she's got
(Come out and see my baby)
A deeper shade of soul
(yeah, my baby's got soul now)
A deeper shade of soul, what she's got
(yeah, yeah, my baby, my baby)
A deeper shade of soul (yeah baby, oh baby)
A deeper shade of soul, what she's got
(yeah, that's my honey, yeah)
A deeper shade of soul

Me too. I used the UDS version as an example at the time to demonstrate to my 35 year old contemporary Canadian radio industry compatriots that rap wasn't 'all that bad'. It wasn't an easy sell.

Yeah... well, UDS's rap is not very good as rap goes.
It would be great to hear the Urban Dance Squad version of this!  Not that the original isn't cool.
Boogaloo! {#Bananasplit}
"Acid" is an album which should be obligatory in any serious music collection.
SWEET!

nope, but close - Stax. The horn-break is from "Knock on Wood" by Eddie Floyd, Booker T & the MG's are the backing band, and the original has the best horn-sound ever recorded.
No doubt.

Ahhh...that was it. And then remade as a disco hit later in the 70 by Aimee Stewart.
Great song! I had no idea UDS covered this (should have I guess..) thanks Bill for showing us the roots of new stuff.  I'll be{#Bananasplit}to this one....
a 1968 blast from the past - good stuff
Thought it was motown! Love motown.

This vaguely reminds me of Summer Love from Grease.

A lot like Carolina Shag music.

i love that version. i saw them open for Living Colour in 1991, and they gave a much better live show.

Bill do you have the Urban Dance Squad track? I lost that CD in a move.

Duane Eddy followed by this... ... just great.

Well the Amazon database for albums with this song is messed up. I got a disc that Amazon showed had this, but it didn't. So I was able to return it but never got around to re-ordering.
Try emusic.com. The album is downloadable as a whole or by individual tracks. All songs are in mp3 format. Subscription fee applies.

I don't suppose you can upload that? It would be great to hear the original again. I just loved it when it came out. I wore out the 45 single pretty quickly, I remember.

I'm with ya there. Had no idea it was even a cover, but the UDS version does do the song justice. Both versions are really cool...

Great percussionist, with the Latin flavor. Died a few months ago, unfortunately.
