Tom Petty was another musician who I somehow passed by without listening, until Radio Paradise, through repeated exposures, led me to recognize how good he was. Not many can write something like this and make it work. I suspect he saw himself as in some way maintaining the type of perspective on his culture as Woody Guthrie. I don't suggest much more similarity than that, but this particular song has that sense of striving for an American success, despite the array of obstacles. It could be in the Florida panhandle or Oklahoma.

Beautiful melody after beautiful memory, Tom Petty was such a supremely gifted songwriter. I never heard this one played on the radio, but I'm so glad it's being played on Radio Paradise.

It must have been frustrating for so many of the rockers from the last century to no longer be able to reach their audiences through mainstream radio. He’s kind of the electric counterpart to John Prine. Simple style, simple lyrics but somehow tells a compelling story. That’s one definition of elegant.
And also miss the songs he won't be giving in the future that isn't.

I am not a Tom Petty fan (I know, how dare me) but this is an excellent song. Well written and nicely produced.
A favorite TP tune, along with Angel Dream #2 and Room At The Top

Mike Campbell sang this last Saturday night with the Dirty Knobs at Soho in Santa Barbara. The place was in tears....Mike included. We all miss Tom so much.
For not knowing the man personally, I sure grieve his passing. His music 'reached' me for decades....always will. I guess in a way I did know him personally 
One of his last and most optimistic. The more one listens to it, the more it becomes his epitaph. RIP, Sir Thomas.

As we now know, Tom was dealing with some serious health issues all summer but decided to just plow through. RIP.

Good selection on this day, following Tom's passing yesterday. Hope something good came for him after all he went through with Big-D. Terry Gross reprized a nice interview with him today on Fresh Air. Sad loss, indeed.

One of Petty's best songs in recent years !!
In the background of on scene in Halt and Catch Fire there are two dudes arguing about Tom Petty. You can hear one guy argue along the lines that everybody likes Tom Petty, it is just a matter of whether or not you choose to admit it. I freely admit it, I love Petty's work in general, and this is a particularly good one.
This song makes me every time I hear it incredibly sad, dunno why though. I still love it.Somethin' is hidden here. and I took my medicine.

Are you familiar with what is called in statistics a "normal distribution"? Like a bell-curve? You are not by any means the only person rating songs at RP with a strange rating distribution. I don't rate on a curve, personally, I let the chips fall where they may and try to reserve the 1-rating for songs I really dislike. But the fact you have such a high number of "sucko-barfo" ratings is surprising. Like I said, a lot of people here have similar distributions. You are not alone.

Yes, Tom is working on a new album according to Rolling Stone Mag . Looking forward to it.
Petty describes the new album, not yet titled, "as kind of like Mojo – to a new power. It's not as strict to the blues as that one is. But everything comes from the blues, and we've found something new – a new way to stamp the blues."
The album is also "born the same way as Mojo," he goes on, "where we perform everything together, with very little futzing around with it after it's done. But things turn up, and when they do, it's exciting and makes you want to go back and try it again."
So far, Petty and the Heartbreakers have cut a dozen songs for the new record. "And of those, I hear six that I'm sure about," he says with obvious delight. "There may be more, but I'm definitely sure of those." He laughs again. "If I'm sure about one, that's exciting."
