Bright light, almost blindin'
Black night still there shinin'
I can't stop, keep on climbin'
Lookin' for what I knew
Had a friend, she once told me
"You got a love, you ain't lonely"
Now she's gone and left me only
Lookin' for what I knew
Mm, I'm tellin' you, now
The greatest thing you ever can do, now
Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now
It's very easy, just-a
Met a man on the roadside cryin'
Without a friend, there's no denyin'
You're incomplete, there'll be no findin'
Lookin' for what you knew
So anytime somebody needs ya
Don't let 'em down, although it grieves ya
Someday you'll need someone like they do
Lookin' for what you knew
Mm, mm, I'm tellin' you, now
The greatest thing you ever can do, now
Is trade a smile with someone who's blue, now
It's very easy, just-a, oh, yeah
Ah, nah, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, yeah

Still the greatest cover art ever.
GREAT!! I bought this right after it came out. I was 15yrs old. Thanx RP!
Yawn.Robert Plant screaming again. Led Zeppelin just gets too scream-y too often.
Listening to this makes me yearn for the loss of the "concept" albums where songs would flow one into the next. Started to happen with the cd revolution and has disappeared with the mp3 format. I understand why but miss it nonetheless.

from what I could tell at 16 years old I thought this was real original, not saying it isn't, just that I was impressed with this in 1970

Little known fact: an NBC sitcom of the same name was inspired by this song. True dat.

Occasionally my RP app plays two songs over each other. It rarely sounds good. I had to check this wasn't one of those occasions
Pure brilliance

Off of my favorite Zeppelin album. Sadly overlooked I'm afraid. At least as far as mainstream radio play is concerned.

I like this and the rest from this, always so hard to make, the third album.
Great! But I prefer the Page Plant version with North African instrumentation on 'No Quarter.'

Exactly. That's why Thea's comment is one of my all-time favourites, does it for me all the time, simply rocks my head off, as you might say!
This is why I love Radio Paradise. What over radio station sticks lesser know songs like this from major artists into such an eclectic mixture of music from all over the board.

Punctuated equilibrium. Evolution moves in starts and spurts. I agree, there was something unique to the musical creativity of Zep, Beatles, Stones, Bowie, Who, and others in their day. But what about Radiohead, Beck, Wilco, Calexico? I'm not putting them on the same pedestal as Beatles, but they're undeniably all innovative, good, and unprecedented too.
Radiohead and Beck did bring something unique and I can say that although I am not a fan of either. Beck is just stylistically not my cup of tea and Radiohead are much too cerebral for my taste (this coming from a guy who was a huge fan of King Crimson in my teens and still am... Talk about cerebral but they also had a passion I do not hear in Radiohead's music.) Furthermore I really can't stand Thom York's whiney vocals...
I don't know Calexico enough to comment but although I dig Wilco well enough, I really cannot put them in the same category of the bands you mention. They're are not really brining anything new to the mix and their influences are too transparent. The older bands you mention as well as RH and Beck took their own influences and really transformed them into something else. To my ear, Wilco is not doing that but they bring a quite likable passion to their music.

...some wonderful guitar work...as usual :D
about the only led zep song i AM NOT Tired of.
This has grown on me to the point of becoming my favorite LZ album. And I agree, this song is not quite right without Celbration Day attached to it...
dang! I really wanted to hear Celbration Day-the song that this blends into on the original LP. I wish Bill woulda let it go on.
This really is a great album. I'd love to hear 'Since I've Been Loving You'

Hmmmm...I can finally enjoy this song again after too many fatties back when...'70? Acoustic Zep is always a treat, and I well remember an interview on WABX wherein Jimmy and Robert announced the next LP would feature a lot more acoustic quitar. Or maybe I read that in Rolling Stone.
Yeah, I knows...if you remember the '60s...
Even though this track gives the impression that the boys were just sitting around the studio jamming, it still sounds great, and distinctly Zeppelin.
Only Stairway to Heaven
Classic Rock stations killed Zeppelin.
One of the most incredible bands of my youth! Still holds up well today.
Go Zep.

One major factor that sets them apart is the eclecticism.
Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham had a deep appreciation for many types of music. They knew their roots like eighties hair bands knew their hair sprays.
To this day you hear of Plant strolling around in Memphis or some African country, all for the sake of music.
Most bands inspired by them just don't get it.
Wasn't it LZ III that Jones was referring to when he said that no longer would they be compared to Black Sabbath?

haha... so true. The skill of Zep is astounding. Their lyrical stylings, amazing guitar playing... they make it sound so simple. Take Stairway to Heaven as an example, any 12 year old with a guitar can learn it in about 15 minutes, but it takes decades to truly master.
I bet it's been at least 30+ years since I last heard this, and I still remember the words! Great to hear it again!!
