You think you're gonna take her away
With your money and your cocaine
You keep thinkin' that her mind is gonna change
But I know everything is okay
She's gonna listen to her heart
It's gonna tell her what to do
She might need a lot of lovin'
But she don't need you
You want me to think that I'm being used
You want her to think it's over
You can't see it doesn't matter what you do
Buddy, you don't even know her
She's gonna listen to her heart
It's gonna tell her what to do
She might need a lot of lovin'
But she don't need you
And you just can't creep up behind her
And you can't understand that she's my girl
She's my girl
Yeah, she's gonna listen to her heart
It's gonna tell her what to do
She might need a lot of lovin'
But she don't need you

No one gives a sh*t.
Flashback to my kid brother's first band (Ozone) - they did a great cover of this! Great album and he kept getting better
Good but far from his best.
Sorry folks, perfect rock and roll here.
No imagination, lyrically or musically. Boring top 40 sound. Belongs on a classic rock station. Once again I'm reminded why this band is in my top 5 overrated bands of all time.
So much Jim Roger McGuinn!
Hooray! I am back to music. Thanks!
Sounds like her heart has Needles and Pins

It is WAYYYYYY too much TP, as in something like 3 per day. Whatever tolerance for TP's whiny voice and jukebox kind of surprises has long vanished thanks to the overplay here on RP.

I like that there is more Tom Petty on RP now. RIP Tom. This song is the ultimate juke box play.

So Byrds, so Harrison!
RIP Tom Petty :-( You'll be missed, but at least we have your music to keep us company
Yaaaay! Thanks again Bill!
To be followed by Collective Soul's "Listen" - of course there's a theme there....
Both tracks I like, not a lot, just enough to rate with a 7 (for TP) and 6 (for CS).
Kind of nice hearing some of the American classic rock selections. It helps keep me going working during the overnight hours.

I was never a fan of Tom Petty, even back then, but a lot of his tunes were a welcome relief from those three horrors you mentioned and a lot of other songs from that era. His albums usually did have good production, especially with the guitar sound.
I bought it when it came out, basically on the strength of this cut and "I Need to Know", which somehow made their way onto the rock airwaves of Mpls. in the summer of '78, joining dreck like "Hot Blooded", "Dust in the Wind" and "Two Tickets to Paradise".
I guess I've always had a soft spot for the Gui-Tar Jangle!

I seem to recall that this song was written by TP after some famous womanizer made moves toward's Tom's wife.
Good song. Is that Roger McGuinn singing harmony?
Great Song

Great (largely overlooked) album.

Bill, you made a comment this song was from Petty's first album in 1978. Their first album was self-titled in 1976 and included the singles, "Breakdown" and "American Girls".

Tom Petty wrote this song as protest against rich boy club types that liked to show off how much money they had. His label wanted him to change the lyric to "with your money and your champagne". Bubbly could be had for pretty cheap compared to the new wonder drug of 1978 so Tom stuck to his guns and refused to change it. If you know anything about his history with record labels, you're probably not surprised that he didn't back down.
right, girls aren't like that anymore . . . .

I don't know where you lived back then, but this song definitely got played in the Boston area as did the other musicians you mentioned.

Tom Petty had at least ten Top 40 hits throughout the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. This guy's been frequently played on the radio for almost forty years.

I don't think Tom's hair style has changed much - the rest of the band - yes.
This guy has simply not written a bad song (except for that one with Stevie Nicks) in almost 40 years. Very underrated artist.
sounds godlike to me man!
I heard Neko Case cover this song in concert. Hot!
I remember when this came out... lotsa memories...
this song is from a beautiful album... then a year later, the third album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers called Damn the Torpedoes came next in 1979, and that album broke Tom Petty into big time superstar status... Damn the Torpedoes caused a global stir...
this is a great song, but I bet these days she listens to her kidneys...
Still cool after all these years.
I have a 12" white label of this track which is vastly better than this version. Much punchier and altogether more powerful. Somewhat slower too, if my memory serves me right. I have never heard the same version of the track elsewhere. I might try and digitise it one day and upload it to RP.
I guess Tom told him! I still like the 12-string.

Nice follow up Bill, keep on rocking in the new world after this.
Not knowing any of the parties personally, I'd predict the winner would be the fellow with the money and the cocaine. But maybe that was just the seventies.

On RP, are you kidding? You'll probably find plenty of people who will say just that.
But not me.

Sounds a bit like Tom Petty, but not as good

excellent musician. _Very_ smart guy, IMO. WHen I saw him though he was so (alcohol) wasted he could barely do the show. WHich was stolen by "The Fabulous Poodles" (who were awesome). For some reason, bands seem to play their B game in Iowa
Isn't that ironic. When I saw TP around 1980, I was (alcohol) wasted. I even broke the back of my chair and took it home. The guy tapping me on the back to get me to sit down shut up after that. And the Fab Poos! I think I still have a (vinyl) album of theirs somewhere...

Awesome album - from all the way back in 1976, my brothas! Tom is timeless.

In my eyes, Petty defines radio rock, and no that is not a bad thing, that is a great thing. Can you honestly say when you are driving down the highway with the windows down and a Petty song comes on that you don't crank it up and sing along?

Exactly. Give the man his due.
Thanks Bill, I was having a draggy Monday and this is just what I needed. I LOVE THIS TUNE! I remember blaring this album over and over in my teens :)

OK, but certainly not among his very best IMO.
Right effin' on with the early stuff like this.
