I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walk alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.
"Fools" said I,"You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, 'The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.
I knew this was going to be popular but I don't quite get the 9. It's always struck me as just solid "good". Some of Simon & Garfunkel's other more eclectic sounds are definitely way up there at 8s and 9s.
My gawd... read the lyrics. Listen to the song. Create the movie in your mind.
I saw Simon and Garfunkel in 2004 in Cologne/Germany. It was the most wonderful concert i ever was. Goose flesh was guaranteed! In The break the Everly Brothers played! All in all it was an unforgettable evening! And I´ve been to many concerts in my life,
A lovely share, thank you our friend.
Thanks Bill.
This: 8.
Disturbed: 9.

I've actually got both tracks at a 10, though I do enjoy hearing Disturb's cover more, it has more grit and urgency, and the video of their cover adds another element too, almost enough to go "full 10"; LLRP!!
The slower Central Park version is even better
They are BOTH EXCELLENT!! Thanx RP!
i still cant harmonize

Thanks idiot_wind for putting a smile on everyone's face. All coworkers in the office are rolling with laughter over your Arcade Fire comment. You can't make this stuff up.

That's a fairly charitable interpretation of windy's long-running fixation.
The ‘Disturbed’ cover is incredible

..and the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made....
this was never truer than today... and they wrote this in 66...
such a foresight...
We didn't get here overnight. The wheels have been turning a long, long time.
Well to be fair 2017 has been kinder than 2016, to this point at least.
Ah. Back when we were young and blissfully naive.

How is it that this person does not know who Don Adams and Lindsey Buckingham are?
And to those who rate songs, if this is not a 10, there are NO 10's!
Boy oh boy...these guys (whoever they are) are just copying the band, Arcade Fire.

Are you 12? You might try looking at the date, they were trailblazers, this album came out well before any members of Arcade Fire or even born. And if you ask any of those members they would probably tell you they have nothing but deep respect for these two gentlemen.

I'm sure someone else has already mentioned the Disturbed cover of this. Somehow this seems to work well for me on this great classic tune. https://youtu.be/u9Dg-g7t2l4
Me. I had to mute it to write this. The best word I can come up with to describe this dirge, is 'twoddle'.
original version??

No auto-tune then.
T-Bone Burnett once said that we have machines today that can produce perfect music but no one seems to care for it much
Some people just don't get ironic humor
Irony may be defined as that which people miss (Julian Barnes).

Very good version, powerful with feeling.
Highly endorsed by Paul Simon after they performed live on Conan:

Even the braindead can work a keyboard to get to RP. Have pity on them
It would have been nice to have had an honest discussion about the true facts of the world when I was young.
You are leaving me hanging. What was this "complete wrong interpretation?"

I wonder who is copying who?!
wtf
Your mother is calling from the main floor.
To look back at this gem from a grandpa's perspective, as if it were a newly polished antiquity is nothing but ridiculous and pathetic!
A comment from 70-plus year old conservative!
To have nothing to say about this pearl but this...?
SAD...!!!
Anyone knows why they let it recorded like this? Horrible rhythm!!!!!!!!
The drum-less version is in the RP library.
That would probably be Prophet's, and since they clearly say "subway walls" it is strongly suggested you get some closed caption device.
Exactly so!
Why does it need to be perfect? Perfection is boring. Therefore it sucks. Therefore it is not perfect. I think this song is perfect enough not to be perfect.
Sometimes people sing harmony with a perfection that that machines cannot measure.
