I'll stand down by the door
And catch the gray men when they
Dive from the fourteenth floor
When Black Friday comes
I'll collect everything I'm owed
And before my friends find out
I'll be on the road
When Black Friday falls
You know it's got to be
Don't let it fall on me
When Black Friday comes
I'll fly down to Muswellbrook
Gonna strike all the big red words
From my little black book
Gonna do just what I please
Gonna wear no socks and shoes
With nothing to do but feed
All the kangaroos
When Black Friday comes
I'll be on that hill
You know I will
When Black Friday comes
I'm gonna dig myself a hole
Gonna lay down in it
'Til I satisfy my soul
Gonna let the world pass by me
The Archbishop's gonna sanctify me
And if he don't come across
I'm gonna let it roll
When Black Friday comes
I'm gonna stake my claim
I'll guess I'll change my name
Th guitar on this is just stellar
Walter Becker lighting it up.
I can relate to cynicism toward consumer culture and anti-capitalist vibes, but these lyrics invoke a rather different feeling here in Australia. Every major bushfire that results in significant destruction gets a 'Black' nickname.
Black Friday happened in 1939, killed 71 people and destroyed one thousand homes. Nearly 75% of the state of Victoria was burned black...
Not sure why this is Steely Dan's fault, but for what it's worth, I live in California and we had our own bushfires recently. Not sure if the Dan was responsible for those either, but I doubt it too.
In my book, PSD would mean Play Steely Dan.
YES, please!

Word dat my friend
This gets a 3. It's never done anything for me.
Everybody has their own tastes. This is a TEN for me!!

human rights in Australia? Aboriginal rights....?

Little did we know.. LOCK HIM UP
This is true. The songs are the bedrock on top of which some great musicians get a chance to show off their musicianship. I caught them thrice in a row in 2017 and it was never boring. Great players, great arrangement. Well worth your time, even now that Walt is gone. (He had kinda checked out long before.)
I caught them back in the 80's when they really started to tour somewhat regularly. Was thinking how in the hell are they going to make things sound even close to what they did in the studio. Concert technology was still pretty primitive when it came to reproducing studio sounds live over a PA in a clamshell with 20,000 people back then. They did a very nice job and kept all the nuance of their music intact live.
Good show at Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
That's perfect!
Yeah, is this rock and roll? Whatever you call it, it's really, really, good.
I'd call it Jazz/Rock fusion and why I +1'd to 9 today!
Some seriously great musicians on all their albums, and the groove on this amazing. Long Live RP and jazzy rock!!
Simply the Best!

Yeah, is this rock and roll? Whatever you call it, it's really, really, good.
PLEASE, do not call him "the Donald". That moniker is already taken -- and ruined.
It's really astounding music.
It continues to improve with age...
I think they're like Jethro Tull or Rush. They either click with you or they don't. I love 'em all.
Though plenty of people don't care for Steely Dan, I don't think they're as polarizing as those two bands you named. Steely Dan has a broader appeal; they had several Top 40 hits, neither Tull nor Rush have.
should say something about becker and fagan music. the dan were and are pioneers.

That's the problem with those guys who compose music using pianos instead of guitars.
The horn charts on "almost gothic" are awesome even for them.

or most other ax's......
Anytime !! Never too much SD.
love your observations...and i agree!
I was a huge Steely Dan fan back in the day. Like most fans I only consider the "real" Steely Dan to have existed for those first 7 albums (although I do own the Two Against Nature CD).
I'm a pleasantly surprised to find someone else who rates Countdown to Ecstasy as their best album, and then Katy Lied as their second.
My Dan album rankings
1) Countdown to Ecstasy
2) Katy Lied
3) Pretzel Logic
4) Can't Buy a Thrill
5) The Royal Scam
6) Aja (their supposed "masterpiece")
7) Gaucho

My daughter was to be named Aja (had sons instead).
PS: That's not a photo of Pretzel Logic.
The fact is, it's pretty much impossible for me to rank their albums, and my list would probably be different if I put it together tomorrow.
Yeah, they all have at least 2-3 outstanding cuts.
Let's keep this slightly modified High Fidelity exercise going, and rank their top 7 tracks, which will certainly contain at least a half-dozen glaring omissions. Here goes mine:
7) Kid Charlemagne
6) The Caves of Altamira
5) Black Friday
4) Reelin' in the Years
3) Deacon Blues
2) Don't Take Me Alive
1) My Old School
Comments again please...
7. Gaucho

5. Can't Buy a Thrill
4. Katy Lied
3. Pretzel Logic
2. Aja

I've been listening to all the Steely Dan albums lately (up through Gaucho), and here's my very unscientific ranking from bottom to top:
7. Gaucho
6. Countdown to Ecstasy
5. Can't Buy a Thrill
4. Katy Lied
3. Pretzel Logic
2. Aja
1. The Royal Scam

Here's my informal, spur-of-the moment rankings. We have the same #1, but after that our rankings diverge. That's OK, though, because each of their albums is excellent, IMO.
1. The Royal Scam (My fave, a concept album of sorts on the underbelly of the American dream)
2. Katy Lied
3. Countdown to Ecstasy
4. Pretzel Logic
5. Can't Buy a Thrill
6. Gaucho (this album is much maligned, but I enjoy it. Fagen and Becker really polished their jazz-influenced sound down to its bare essence here)
7. Aja (How can I rank this last? I should probably start over!)

Townes Van Zandt had a song called "Like A Summer's Thursday", on A Gentle Evening With Townes Van Zandt

Not so good today, and it's Monday ... ugh.
I guess there are no song writers working on Thursday.

Was it a guy named Gary Katz? That seems to be in my memory banks.
Katz with the able assistance of engineer Roger "The Immortal" Nichols.
A solid team effort.

Skunk was not with the Doobies when they recorded, The Captain And Me, and he didn't write that song.
Those lyrics are way off too.

People outside my window
Goin' everywhere
People that are happy
People without a care
We all got to be loved
It's a nat'ral thing don't you know
The sooner we find what we need
Gonna be feeling it, happy to show
I'm gonna change my method
Get me a big ham bone
Gonna make all the leaders of the country
Get it together and bring it on home
We all got to be loved
It's a nat'ral thing don't you know
The sooner we find what we need
Gonna be feeling it, happy to show
Those men in the circus
Those men on the wire
Their feet hangin' fifty feet up
Know they're countin' on their daily luck
To bring them through the fire
I was wrong about one thing - Johnston wrote it, not Baxter.
Walter Becker lighting it up.
Walter Becker was so underrated.
