I found this to be one of Patty's least inspired songs, and I'm a huge fan of Patty's. I also love Emmylou, having performed her songs as a backup band for a female singer in a bar band and seen her live on multiple occasions. So my cred to call this "dull" is established.

I love you Emmylou, but sometimes (especially as you get older) you strip the passion from a song better than anyone this side of Michel Boublé.

Patti is very good in her own right, but she's no Emmylou Harris.
If you told me this was the original and Patty came along and remade it with the fuller sound I would not question it.

Patti Griffin is such a great songwriter and Emmy's treatment here is spot on.

I agree too. Patty's manages to rock more and to sound more reflective at the same time.
In the absence of that version, though, this'll do.
Never in my life - not once - have I heard any song that had the word remix in parenthesis that didn\'t make me want to destroy things. This song is no exception.

I think this song is a mature woman's version of busting a move. Within those hackneyed rhymes are subtle clues that paint a picture. While "everybody" (the kids?) is off in search of shallow entertainment, Emmy Lou says "been there done that" (unlike John Lennon, who "just had to look") and uses the precious moments to get some time alone in deep water with her man. She knows what she wants (put on your cut-offs baby) and unlike a younger woman (and the women in most songs), she is calling the shots. After years of trying to be mature and responsible (and defending her honor), she is "taking her chances," maybe her last chance. She screws up her courage - "go ahead and kiss him if you want to."
I could be totally off base - maybe it means nothing at all.
