Jamaica was the lovely one, I played her well
As we lay in the tall grass where the shadows fell
Hiding from the children so they would not tell
We would stay there 'till her sister rang the evening bell
Jamaica, say you will
Help me find a way to fill these empty hours
Say you will come again tomorrow
The daughter of a captain on the rolling seas
She would stare across the water from the trees
Last time he was home he held her on his knees
And said the next time they would sail away just where they pleased
Jamaica, say you will
Help me find a way to fill these lifeless sails
And stay until my ships can find the sea
Jamaica was a sweet young one, I loved her true
She was a comfort and a mercy through and through
Hiding from this world together, next thing I knew
We had brought her things down to the bay
What could I do
Jamaica, say you will
Help me find a way to fill these sails
And we will sail until our waters have run dry
As we lay in the tall grass where the shadows fell
Hiding from the children so they would not tell
We would stay there 'till her sister rang the evening bell
Jamaica, say you will
Help me find a way to fill these empty hours
Say you will come again tomorrow

i've heard those enough that i'd rather here more stuff like this one that i'm not as completely familiar with. anytime william/bill plays one of JBs "lesser known" (to those of us who weren't die-hard fans when these came out like me) tracks, i find myself stopping and listening intently. i love his storytelling. his voice is comforting. i like his work a lot more than i thought i did. those songs that you mentioned are also very good imo, but, i am enjoying hearing more of these instead.
This is good but it would be great to hear "Somebody's Baby" or "Lawyers In Love" and get this place rocking.

So lucky to grow up with this music, in '71 when this came out I was 11(lucky to have older brothers) in '21 I'm 61 and this makes me smile rainbows.........still.
I grew up with Gordie Lightfoot.

This whole album makes my heart sing. I believe "I" discovered Jackson Browne. When I was 11, the year it came out, my best friend's father had this album and I listened to it over and over when I visited. He finally said, "Oh, someone gave it to me, I don't care for it, you can have it." I had never heard of Jackson Browne but I have been his follower since, in my mind, day one. And it was the right choice. His music will always, always have a special place in my heart and memory. I feel like he and I grew up together.

Clicks Godlike because I grew up listening to Jackson Browne and still love him.

Nice.
No posts on this song since 2014? I guess RP hasn't been playing it. More Jackson Browne, please!
I bought this when it first came out, without hearing it first. A Rolling Stone record review rated it pretty highly. Have always loved this album more than any of his others.
omg....
There is So Much More

from his unparalleled career
that we never hear on RP!!

Niiiice, thank you.
Still good.
Glad to hear this take of one of my favorite albums.
Thanks for playing this great song from one of my favorite artists.
haven't heard any JB on here in a while - Thanks Bill!

I disagree with you, keller1 - Jackson Browne IS a time. I can listen to something he did thirty years ago and still love it and want to hear it again.
And anyway - what's wrong with staying in the realm of a time that was good for us? (I'm gonna be 55 in October, my hair is to my waist, and I wear denim dresses and Birkenstocks. Guess that makes me "of a time.") *shrug* I love Jackson Browne's music. Always have, always will.
I only found out of Cynaera passing. I'll miss her comments. I like her take on songs and love for music and life that showed whether she liked or didn't care for a tune.

Oh, man, "relaxing" in my off-campus house with a few friends after a long day, letting the evening slide into night with a little JB on the box.
The singer-songwriter genre may have only lasted a few years, but there was a lot of good stuff and JB was one of the best.

I hear ya ... I saw him this week with some friends who are actually bigger fans than me, and for a minute I could have sworn it was the 70s again.
Then I took a look at the crowd —— skullets, paunches, clothes on some of the women that they should have stopped wearing twenty years ago, and realized that it really wasn't.
Not to disparage JB —- decent show, very professional —- but he is definitely of a time.

We're going to see him in less than a week, and got 4th row centre! You folks' comments make me look forward to it. Like so many of us RP listeners, I remember way back when this song came out on the radio. My good buddy in high school bought it for me for my birthday and I've been a fan ever since.

I don't say this much, but I'm jealous! I have the two volume live set, with the storytelling and all. I sure want to see that done live.
I have that, too - his banter is almost better than the songs he performs! I love it when he told the story about how someone from the audience yelled for him to do "Peaceful, Easy Feeling," so he did, but he messed up the words (well, it wasn't his song!) Jackson Browne is my favorite artist.

This brings back some very nice memories! Nearly wore this one out. Amazing how these songs can put us back in what seems like yesterday... Please play more from this album. Thanks!

I still can't get into it. Guess I'm missing some interesting guitar bit, for as much as I like the piano, it's always been guitar-driven music that's done it for me. Or, as in the case of Morphine, some powerful sax.
Now that I have mellowed out some with age I can enjoy JB. A little. I detested his plain vanilla music when I was younger.

Pretty close to the perfect classic rock that everything is based on...
I prefer Tom Rush' take on this off of "Merrimack County" ... damn that was a long time ago.

I agree, that's a very good song. I was pleasantly surprised.

Couldn't have put it better myself. He's done very little of note since "The Pretender" (except perhaps that song "In the Shape of a Heart" from one of those mediocre 80s albums) but my favourite is probably "Late for the Sky" which contains some of the best lyrics ever, IMHO

I heartily agree, more J.B.
