I was six years old when this came out and I liked it 'Hey, it was a song about boots! so much better than all those love songs!' and the descending guitar riff bridge was cool - not that I would have understood any words outside of "guitar" and "cool". I recall my father making some reference to her voice versus Frank Sinatra. "Who is Frank Sinatra?" I asked.
When I was a kid my parents owned a burger joint next door to our house. This song came out in 66 when I was 8. I can still remember this song playing on the juke box. I get the visual of the college kids in there, burgers frying, soda fountain ....
This was back in the day, and still is, one of the worst songs of all time and I wish RP would scratch it from the play list. Please.

this will now forever be associated in my mind with the scene in "Big Love" after Alby's lover commits suicide.
This was a novelty song when it came out and should have disappeared 30 minutes later. Why do people keep playing this trash? I just don't get it.
Apparently the song was originally written for Frank, but the consensus was that it was inappropriate for a man to sing about putting the boots to a woman (hmm, ya think?) and so Frank suggested Nancy give it a shot. Of course this could just be a rumour that never died. Either way, love it or hate it, we're still listening to it half a century later.
This was one of the worst song, if not the worst, in 1966 and it still is. RP, please scratch this from your playlist.

Love this! I distinctly remember when this song first came out. Would have been 10 or 11 years old.
Well, the bass is kinda cool.

Again, your opinion, fair enough, but logically I don't think it's supportable. I think you (and you wouldn't be the first) overestimate Frank's powers here. This is not the only song she recorded but it's the primary one that's survived, and I submit, on the strength of its own merits. As time goes on her parentage means less and less and her work stands on its own.

I don't see how this is possible. I'm not saying he didn't get breaks and backing early on, sure, but so did others (this is pretty-well accepted if never proven).
