When I heard the knock on the door
I couldn't catch my breath
Is it too late to call this off
We could slip away, wouldn't that be better
Me with nothing to say, and you in your autumn sweater
I tried my best to hide
In a crowded room, it's nearly possible
I wait for you, oh, most patiently
So I looked for your eyes
And the waves looked like they'd pour right out of them
I'll try hard, I'll try always
But it's a waste of time
It's a waste of time if I can't smile easily
Like in the beginning
In the beginning...
I couldn't catch my breath
Is it too late to call this off
We could slip away, wouldn't that be better
Me with nothing to say, and you in your autumn sweater
I tried my best to hide
In a crowded room, it's nearly possible
I wait for you, oh, most patiently
So I looked for your eyes
And the waves looked like they'd pour right out of them
I'll try hard, I'll try always
But it's a waste of time
It's a waste of time if I can't smile easily
Like in the beginning
In the beginning...

Strange. I had this rated as a rare 1. . . today my ears tell me it is a 7 at least and gets bumped to an 8 for the shaky egg and splendidly lazy drum work.

Muy relajante, en especial en horas de oficina... Que buena programación.
Sitting in the train, it fits perfect
This is very cool.
Sheesh, I thought Moby had a whiny voice...
A drum machine, an accordion, and a whine.

Sufjan and Eels?

That was a disease, not a tune. =1

Hate to point out the obvious, but since Hot Chip formed in about 2000 and even this later Yo La Tengo tune is from 1997 (the band has been around since the mid 1980s!) the comment is a bit strange.

nice, nice, nice sound.
Oh-so-perfect for a crisp, clear September morning in Maine ...

I just L-O-V-E this song, especially as the leaves fall and air cools ... so atmospheric.
"You're just not cool if you don't like these guys." Said the 40ish hipster one bright sunny day in Brooklyn.
"Yeah, yeah, that's nice," I said. "But I asked for a skinny, no foam latte. This is clearly soy."

Yo no la tengo. I don't get this one at all. As soporific as a bland autumn sweater, as dull as a wet Sunday afternoon in Hull (and that's dull), as sedative as a bottle of Dreamy Sleepy Nighty Snoozy-Snooze.
(Hey, where's the sleepy emoticon gone? )

Lame.
You and your awful sweater?
Just happened to glance up at the playlist and saw this one running, love this song. I may play it this weekend!8
The more songs I hear from them, the more I like!!!

I was digging this song for the first time (having heard it before and not liking it) but especially enjoyed reading the comments and Onion article from 2007.
They're recording and I'm not? This track gives hope to us all; that's a good thing.

This song is so simple yet unbelievably addicting. 7=>9

I really like the drumming, especially in the beginning.
Sufjan and Eels?
I have this song in my iPod. It's a good song to listen to while daydreaming.
Thank you, thank you! This song has been on my mind (it always is this time of year) and I've been meaning to go dig it out. Absoultely goregous, dreamy, perfect. Brings back a lot of happy memories. And I love the John Lennon shoutout.
One of my favorite YLT songs. Thanks RP for making my autumn morning!

Great selection this evening. A lovely haunting song. (Connection response is great tonight!)

"I haven't seen this much senseless hipster carnage since the Great Sebadoh Fire Of '93,"
Friggin' hilarious!
OK, I'll admit it. I don't get Yo La Tengo.
(That feels better.)
I like it. Always heard about them, never really listened...kind of like sparklehorse
very cool tune.... nice to wake up to....
Sad to say this about anything on R.P. - but I find this an uninspired, insipid weedy drone, with hardly any redeeming factors.
best line of that article, hands down...
"I gave up my vintage Galaxie 500 shirt just to help some guy bandage his arm. It was horrible."
speaking of, why is there no Galaxie 500 on RP? wow, someone call the darling indie band oversight committee.

For contrast, how about following this with Laurie Anderson's 'Sweaters'Â…
I appreciate Yo La's 'And Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out", but "I no longer love it"Â…

Your all aware that the Onion is a satorical newspaper, right??
Um...I think you mean satirical. Satori is something quite different from satire...
Is it about wanting to bail on your wedding, and eloping, instead?
I love this song.
Period.
This song could not possibly end to soon.
....and the world laughs and laughs....
I almost pee'd my pants when I first read that article....toooooo funny.
One of my favorite bands...check out "Ride the Tiger", "New Wave Hotdogs", or "President" if you haven't heard any of their early stuff....so good.

I love this album and i love this track, i didn't know it was on RP. Hope someone upload "Stockholm Syndrome"
Song by song they might sound like Eels or somebody else, but as a whole they're Yo La Tengo and they are quite good. Truly underrated band.
Eels meet They Might Be Giants. Not bad.

I LIKE YO LA TENGO... OF THIS SONG EXISTS A VERSION REMIX .
OK, I agree. this is wayyy too much like a funeral of a musician.
Other than the organ sound overload, its Good stuff.
meh...this song does nothing for me, though I think that I've liked other things by them. YEah, that keyboard definitely gets old.
I'm liking this band more and more.
My gawd get off the keyboard, the rest is ok..5....Am I at a funeral?

This is an excellent song from a sadly underrated band. I had the pleasure of seeing YLT in live concert - they were transcendent!
I wouldn't quite say they are underrated, the critics adore YLT and they have a strong fan base. It's just that the music they make is a bit too ecclectic and adventuresome for the masses. Add to that the fact that Ira and Georgia don't have radio ready voices and you get a band that will never appeal to mainstream tastes.
Did you know that Rolling Stone listed this album one of the 100 most important albums of the 90's?

A favourite! thx... They always reminded me of the New Fast Automatic Daffodils on this track (bongo's and cool bass I guess)
I'd love to hear Lloyd Cole do this... this could almost be one of his songs.
Try singing the verses of Lucinda Williams' "Righteously" over this song....

:highfive: My sentiments exactly
Thoroughly unimpressed. I thought my CD was skipping, or my LP was scratched, and then I remembered it was online - maybe my streaming radio was doing some weird buffering error? Sooooooo repetitive....
I am tickled to be hearing a number of cuts off of "I can hear the heart beating as one..." lately. This is a fantastic album, with this track being a premier example. If it is intelligent, eclectic rock you're after, Yo La Tengo will deliver! How nicely their material fits in the RP playlist.
Wooooooo, cool piece of music ! Another discovery thx to RP. So nice !
Here is another band that has completely flown under my radar for too dang long. Great music. I highly recommend this album, as well as "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out" and "Fakebook" Haven't bought the new one yet, but it's on the list.
Nice song.
A favourite! thx... They always reminded me of the New Fast Automatic Daffodils on this track (bongo's and cool bass I guess)
