I'm wakin' at the crack of dawn
to send a little money home
from here to the moon
is risin' like a discotheque
and now my bags are down and packed for traveling
Lookin' at happiness
keepin' my flavor fresh
nobody knows I guess
how far I'll go, I know
so I'm leavin' at Six O' Clock
meet in a parkin' lot
Harriet Hendershot
sunglasses on, she waits by this
Glass and concrete and stone
It is just a house, not a home.
Skin, that covers me from head to toe
except a couple tiny holes and openings
Where, the city's blowin' in and out
this is what it's all about, delightfully
Everything's possible
when you're an animal
not inconceivable
How things can change, I know
So I'm puttin' on aftershave
nothin' is out of place
gonna be on my way
Try to pretend, it's not only
Glass and concrete and stone
That it's just a house, not a home.
And its glass and concrete and stone
It is just a house, not a home
And my head is fifty feet high
Let my body and soul be my guide
This sucks. And I like the Talking Heads.
Really not crazy about Byrne's solo stuff.
Agree. The combination of musicians in the THs was interesting, but I have yet to hear any of his solo work that lives up to those tunes. Sometimes you need other people to add some oomph to your work, like when he teamed with Eno for Bush of Ghosts.

That solo work encompasses most of David Byrne's catalog. It's a shame it doesn't appeal to you. It speaks to me.
I think we can all agree that D. Byrne is good. However, I feel like I hear this song every day. Perhaps we can give this song a "rest?"
Whoa, Egrey! I don't begrudge anyone who likes D. Byrne but please don't characterize me as agreeing that D. Byrne is good.
It might not.
He just played here in Eugene and it was the next best thing since the Stop Making Sense Tour! 12 musicians jamming, venue dancing, it was a blast!
Who is "we", and why would "we" do that?
The lyric after the song title "Glass and concrete and stone, it's just a house, not a home" reminds me of one of the funniest wedding gifts I've ever seen.
When my dad got married for the 3rd time, one of his business associates named Mr. Chen got him and my new step-mum (she's Canadian) a machine made wood carving with the words "LOVE IS WHAT MAKES A HOME A HOUSE" and a price tag of $4.99.
Not only was the gift super funny because it was a Chinese knock-off of an otherwise cool gift with the idiom screwed up, Mr. Chen is a multi-millionaire who owns several apartment buildings in the Seattle area and flew back-and-forth to China at least once a month. The idea that he bought a wedding gift in China to bring back to Seattle for my dad was very heartwarming; the fact that his rich ass paid less than $5 for a gift cheesier than a fondue party in Wisconsin AND the wording of the idiom was flipped so as to not have the intended meaning....well that is priceless.
I think it was re-gifted to another recently wed friend of my dad as a gag gift...and hopefully re-re-gifted....and so on....
Because this song reminds me of this hilarious gift I'm bumping my otherwise 7 rating to an 8. LONG LIVE RP!!
Agreed, It's just unfortunate the same can't be said for the rest of the album.
I can say it for the rest of the album; all good stuff.
Thanks Radio Paradise, who else would pull out these nuggets from time to time? Nobody.
Thank you. From what I can remember, Byrne's actual singing was limited in TH: he spoke lyrics more. It might be better these days if he found someone to sing for him.
Agreed, It's just unfortunate the same can't be said for the rest of the album.
I wish. They had some relevance, and it's not bad, but 2 of their songs per day just goes to show that Bill has got a crush on it. That's his good right, as it's his radio station, but for me it's a valid reason to switch to a different channel every day. I wouldn't mind one of their songs per week, but here it's completely overrepresented imho.
Bill has his reasons to play his faves and you have yours to leave. See ya!

Also enjoys keeping their flavor fresh
I never heard this song until a few months ago on RP. I went home and downloaded it almost immediately then, like a teenager, listened to it on repeat for an hour. Then I told one of my former students about it and it was an instant win with him.
Long live David Byrne. A weirdo I like.
A weirdo I like too. VIVA WEIRDOS!

I'll get me dirty mac...
Fred - depends on what you DID after you woke at the crack of dawn. Right there with you, grabbing me coat...
Yep. I've not been listening to RP very much these past few months, as there is little that's new to my ears anymore. Time was when I'd be chasing down 80% of everything I heard here... those were the days.
Anyway, I'm glad I'm sitting at the computer and happened to glance at what's next so I could quickly mute my sound system.
Beklagar SweTex men inte f-n är detta briljant, bara tråkigt. Hälsningar från moderlandet?
Brilliantly boring ?
I'll get me dirty mac...
Yup, what he (she) said.
Mine neither. But then, I equally detest all TH/DB tracks.
I guess the tractor-pull crowd has to listen to something!

Stop your spewing, troll. If you can't handle people not having the same taste in music as you maybe you should leave instead of attacking people here, pal.
Ah, Dave... there you are. I was afraid that hovel may have fallen in on you.
Start your barfing, pal.

I love that Bill continues to ignore the haters.
I know it's not the greatest song ever written but why the over-the-top vitriol?
Music is about community. But, the community will be very small if the distribution network does not pay the artists. Byrne may resent the executives at Warner Bros., but they did distribute his music at one point, and they did pay him. Perhaps they should have paid him more.
I'm not seeing how the internet is paying for startup bands. Neither does it seem adequate for them to sell their own CDs at shows. Am I missing something?

There was another piece in the Times today about yet another 20 percent drop in CD sales. (Are they running the same news piece every 4 months?) Jeez guys, the writing's on the wall. How long do the record execs think they'll have those offices and nice parking spaces? (Well, more than half of all record A&R and other execs are gone already, so there should be plenty of parking space). They, the big 4 or 5, should give the catalogues back to the artists or their heirs as a gesture before they close the office doors, as they sure don't know how to sell music anymore. (I have Talking Heads stuff on the shelf that I can't get Warner to release.) The "industry" had a nice 50-year ride, but it's time to move on. Luckily, music remains more or less unaffected — there is a lot of great music out there. A new model will emerge that includes rather than sues its own customers, that realizes that music is not a product in the sense of being a thing — it's closer to fashion, in that for music fans it tells them and their friends who they are, what they feel passionately about and to some extent what makes life fun and interesting. It's about a sense of community — a song ties a whole invisible disparate community together. It's not about selling the (often) shattered plastic case CDs used to come in.

Every once in awhile David Byrne hits a home run, this is nice.
. . . another dose of puke!

Eno made The Talking Heads great and he makes David Byrne step up from being merely OK. I can't really remember DB doing anything memorable after TH.
Sorry for the sarcasm -nothing against DB, but there is so much amazingly great music that could be mixed in here at RP. I´d like even more variety!
