I still don't know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
A million dead-end streets
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-Changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-Changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence and
So the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-Changes
Don't tell t hem to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-Changes
Where's your shame
You've left us up to our necks in it
Time may change me
But you can't trace time

Strange fascination, fascinating me
Changes are taking the pace I'm going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-Changes
Oh, look out you rock 'n rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strange)
Ch-ch-Changes
Pretty soon you're gonna get a little older
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
I said that time may change me
But I can't trace time

Eight years this month??
I played Changes One Bowie (first batch of CDs purchased in 1985) four or five times that night.

That one hit me hard.

I definitely want no part of this discussion.
I just couldn't help noticing the words  'left.. causing problems over.. rights'
and thinking 'if only we could all be ambidextrous' ....
.
feel free to ignore that though

In a time where the right is trying to erase trans people from the face of the earth (using trans kids as a pretext), this is eerily and heartbrakingly up to date.

This album changed my life the day I first heard it..  I was 13 years old. David Bowie opened up the world of real, true music to me. For that I will always hold a special place in my heart for him.
Of blessed memory and such a terrible loss..
GREAT!!! ICONIC!!!

45 years ago my brother came at home with this record and Ziggy, all together. I listened it for years and years. Time changed me. But bowie's voice on this song still the same : young and genious.

The problem with David Bowie is that no-one else sounds nearly as interesting by comparison ...turns off RP to stream DB for rest of the day... :)

This was the first Bowie song I ever heard, on Christmas Day 1972. I had read an article about DB in Rolling Stone and was intrigued but didn't want to risk my hard earned cash on the high price of an album (maybe $3) that I might not like. Solution; I bought the album as a Christmas gift for my sister. She didn't know what the hell it was upon opening the gift but we both became lifelong fans. Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. Still magic!

Ha!  What a thoughtful approach.  Not really self-oriented, rather an extremely generous brother who introduced his sister to a fan-dam-tas-tic artist!
God is David Bowie {#Wink}

He was such a great singer, songwriter, performer... I miss him.

Though I know every single word and nuance of this like my own heartbeat it still elicits a rare thrill...and David's jammin good with weird and ghillie somewhere and now Van the Man is crooning and RP is such a Sweet Thing, isn't it? Thanks, RP, for the Soundtrack!

Not my favorite Bowie material, but still better than 99% of the songs out there.

1. Dirty Boys
2. I'd Rather be High

But the new album is quite good, and the first single released a few months back, "Where Are We Now" is not indicative of the rest.

I'll second that. New album is solid.

Ten years?  Not unless David Bowie was "out and about" in the 1950s.  You may want to check your dates.  David Bowie's first album was released in 1967; T. Rex (then known as Tyrannosaurus Rex), released their first album in 1968.  Bolan and Bowie were both playing music around London since the mid-1960s; they knew one another and even played gigs together.  Both also had the same manager and the same producer for a time.  Marc Bolan was already deceased about ten years after Bowie's first album.

Marc Bolan and David Who? The extraordinary story of one of the closest friendships - and most bitter rivalries - in pop

The mix is thin... :-(
Great segue from "Star Witness" Neko Case to this song. Kissing my fingertips....Ooh la la!

This song be the story of my life...

everybody in my church still loves this song...  that has not changed...

It was easier to face the changes when this song came out; I was 11 years old. Now I'm 52 and the message is so much more bitter. {#Think}
nice to see that Bill has reverted to the Hunky Dory cover art.

Everybody in my church loves this song...

I'm always amazed to recall that this tune comes from Hunky Dory back in '71, its retained a contemporary tone throughout the years, IMHO.

This is a classic and very powerful healing message all in one!        {#Ask}
Thanks RP.....acceptance of change is much easier while hearing Sir David!

All Bowie is good/great Bowie. Quite a diversity here in my opinion. You have the ability to dig into his catalog. I have all his albums but then I'm spoiled (and I know what I like).

You're probably thinking of the ChangesOne and ChangesTwo albums, which had different covers. When these were combined for the CD market - I believe the result was actually all of ChangesOne and a few songs awkwardly cherry picked from ChangesTwo - we got this Photoshop beauty on the cover of the resulting Changes album.

I agree. ONE egocentric portrait would have worked fine, and made for a more attractive cover. {#Crowded}

Great song.  Too bad it sounds so lame compared to the last three tracks you've played.
This song and  many of David Bowie's songs are inside the soundtrack of my childhood.  Great  memories.

Yeah, he was scary great. And I do mean scary. And great. A visionary rabble-rouser, really.

Probably he's victim of the Now That Everybody's Appropriated His Sound And Made It Mainstream, It Doesn't Sound So Original Anymore syndrome.

Bowie is one of those guys - chameleons in pop - that changed music and made a difference. More than MJ did IMO . . .
Almost forgot to mention....this is dire.

I know it preceded Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, since he performed it on the Ziggy Stardust concert film that Pennebaker made in 73. Wikipedia says it was Hunky Dory, for what that's worth. Definitely from early in his career. No offense, but I don't think it's "pop." It's not a rocker like Watch That Man or Rebel Rebel, but it's a pretty decent tune, IMO.

Hunky Dory is a folky, mellow almost jazzy and yes poppy album musically.  But check out the darkness of many of the lyrics.

Now if you want rock, look at the book ends, Man Who Sold the World - almost but not quite metal - and Ziggy - great classic hard riff driven guitar rock

Interesting. I just heard this song come on and looked at the ratings on the RP. I saw that I had given it a 2 some time in the past. And that's still what I give it. I paged down and could scarcely find a negative comment from everyone. So now I feel guilty for being negative, but honestly, I have always thought Bowie was all about style, and nothing about substance. He irritates the heck out of me. Don't know why I am writing this - feel like I am shouting into the wilderness. But it needed to be said. Didn't it? No? OK, just forget I said anything.

Thanks for your civility.

No go back and buy The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Alladin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, Low, Heroes, Lodger, and Scary Monsters, and tell me why you don't think he was among the most consitently prolific and substantive artists in rock and roll in the 1970-1980 time frame.

Or read comments from punks and new wavers of the 70s, post-punks and new romantics of the 80's, indie artists like frank black, billy corgan, Curt Cobain and countless others and tell me you don't think Bowie was among the more influential artists  of all time.

Talking heads are hardly overplayed anywhere but perhaps here. That said, it sounds like you just don't like the Talking Heads so why don't we scratch that off the list, eh?

Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" comes to mind as well as "We will rock you" by Queen, but we could go on all day about overplayed songs.

Bill G. mixes it up p p p p pretty good I think.

And yes, although not at the top of the Bowie heap of great songs, this is still a classic if not an overplayed one.
