This goose is cooked, these tongues are tied
Around the block an airborne blight
But looking on the brighter side
There's far less to which I'd be obliged
In the meadow where the black breeze blows
Where underneath the waves, you were most alone
Can you hear a subtle, aching tone?
Through the water, through the earth, to chill your bones
Looking on the brighter side
Looking on the brighter side
Looking on the brighter side
Looking on the brighter side
Around the block an airborne blight
But looking on the brighter side
There's far less to which I'd be obliged
In the meadow where the black breeze blows
Where underneath the waves, you were most alone
Can you hear a subtle, aching tone?

"This goose is cooked" comes from Protestant martyr Jan Hus, who was burnt at the stake by the Catholic church in 1415, Hus sounding like the word for goose in Bohemian.

Just right for what is becoming a beautiful spring Friday night here. Never heard of the Shins before - keep up the good work RP!
Wonder of wonders. A Shins song which I like.
Beautiful, beautiful set, RP. Thanks!
Such an wonderful tune and amazing album!

Listening to this excellent track I thought I felt where Jonathan Wilson got elements of "Cecil Taylor" from.

Not sure about "the most"... that's fairly absolute, but it certainly is right up there with the best. As are quite a few of Shins' albums, and a hellofa lot of other stuff played on RP. Thanks. I need to clarify my comments about critics a bit. I think criticism is very important for everyone. My problem is with professional critics who carry a certain amount of baggage. What you generally get with the pros are grad-school elitists who very likely are not true fans of what they are writing about. More than likey they are writers who need a job and who get this primarily by means of connection. You'll notice they are all stooges for all the old sacred cows (blues music, for instance). You quickly see the articles are much more about pointless displays of arcane adjectives, categories, excessive learning and being on the inside than they are about true responses (of which they are generally incapable).

Giving off more than a little Pink Floyd vibe.

Heard the first few bars & thought immediately, Simon & Garfunkel. Instead the Shins. next >
Typical "Wincing" song. These songs just make you feel like they had unused potential. They're not as good as previous Shins.

This is nice, but to my mind not worth the heavy play it is getting here. "Once you clean it, there's not much to it."

Got to love The Shins...
And if you do, listen to this French band, they really sound fresh and Shins-like at the same time:

A See Emily Play/Caring is Creepy kinda Shins tune. Nice! Certainly likeable.
I like the Shins. I like this. I like you. That is all.
At last, a song by The Shins that doesn't make the dog growl.
I think Bill likes The Shins. This is the third song I've heard in the last two days!
While this is not my favorite song from Wincing The Night Away its still a wonderful track.
My shins are barking: Woo Woo Hoo!
Not a huge fan of the Shins, but what a good follower to some Pink Floyd. Good job, Bill.
Zuper.
Bill's sets and segues are the BEST I've ever heard. Yes, some of the sets are heard more than once. If you have a favorite painting or sculpture, would you look at it only once in your lifetime?

Its a new cd. I don't even like the Shins, but I don't begrudge Bill playing a new cd on higher rotation.
I back you up on that, Xkolibuul, new stuff gets a little more rotation time. Wincing... will pass its new release prime, and there's new stuff ready to take its place coming out all the time.
BTW I am also a donating listener. Anyone who thinks RP is worth keeping on the air to rival typical FM should have a few cents to spare. After all, apparently listeners have internet access to hear it--either listeners can afford that in their homes or they have a white collar job that will allow them to listen to RP at work. Or you have one of those snazzy satellite radios that arent cheap.
Whatever access the listener has, they obviously dont live and work in boxes on the curb. $2 is appreciated as well as $100. What a listener does with their wallet is a vote for this station, against this station or indifferent to its existence.

I saw them a couple weeks ago when this album came out. They played a release show at the Virgin Megastore in NYC. They put on an excellent show. I was curious before the show how they would be live. They went well beyond my expectations. Someone had told me that Mercer can't hit his studio high notes. That was not true; the band and vocals were on. Definitely go see them.
