Me and Javi shouted slogans in Spanish
Like it was our world to win
Then they move a plant down a hater
Time to bite your tongue again
Chorus:
I've seen the fabled city
It's streets are paved with gold
But an iron fence runs round it
It's iron gate is closed
What ain't right ain't right he told me
But something else passed behind his eyes
Now he's downtown on his knees washing floors for somebody
And quietly biding his time
Chorus:
I've seen the fabled city
It's streets are paved with gold
But an iron fence round it
It's iron gate is closed Hey
The gas station on Sunset and Crescent
I met an angel sad and old
She lived in the alley behind the market
In the shadows may be hidden from the lord
And for a dollar she sang a song
Sounded more like a prayer
A wish that her dead mother and father
Couldn't look down and see her there
Chorus:
I've seen the fabled city
It's streets are paved with gold
But an iron fence round it
It's iron gate is closed
On a wire outside my window
There sit one hundred swallows
And I suspect that if one flew
Then ninety nine would follow
Like it was our world to win
Then they move a plant down a hater
Time to bite your tongue again
Chorus:
I've seen the fabled city
It's streets are paved with gold
But an iron fence runs round it
It's iron gate is closed
What ain't right ain't right he told me
But something else passed behind his eyes
Now he's downtown on his knees washing floors for somebody
And quietly biding his time

Sad but true.
Agreed. Why all the hostility for this song? Better than most, certainly not a 1 or 2.

Nah, that's an old optical illusion of a sort, based on "opponent-process theory". If one stares at the image for 30 seconds or so, then looks at a white surface, an after-image of the American flag - with it's appropriate colors - will be seen. That image long-preceded Green Day.
Think he borrowed the background from Green Day?

Wow... it is hard to beat such a line up of boots-on-the-ground-get-you-in-the-guts music than these last three song! keep it rolling BillG!
The Nightwatchman (Tom Morello) - The Fabled City
Harry Manx - Bring That Thing (live)
Steve Earle - Copperhead Road

the last three songs make me want to give up with RP
this is poor, like the previous songs, unless you like bad singing and strumming

I'll second that....
This is very bad. I expected more from Morello. What a shame.
Edit: I just had the dubious distinction of giving this song it's first sucko-barfo. *sigh*

Not enough appreciation for this song here. Good stuff.
And people say Bob Dylan's voice is annoying.
This sounds like a song from the Muppets Christmas Carol. Everyday, in every way Scrooge is getting worse.

Talk about trying way too hard. This is awful.
A younger, more literal, Leonard Cohen, I guess.
no.. not good.. i had the unfortunate displeasure of attending Tom Morello's live performance at the Commodore. I was really looking forward to it as I'm a big fan of Tom Morello and his political views. It was honestly too painful to sit through the whole concert. It was so bad I had to leave early..

Wow! Why have I never heard this fellow before? A down home voice, great storytelling and set in a theme of something - ominous or revelatory - to follow.

This guy's voice pales in comparison to Johnny's just prior.
There is something about this song I like, but I am not sure what! Something caught my ear.

I don't even know who Morello is, let along whether he's 'hot' or not.
I do know the song is boring & pedestrian.
