Hoo, my little pretty one, my pretty one
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Hoo, you make my motor run, my motor run
Gun it comin' off o' the line, Sharona

Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, woo!

M-m-m-my Sharona

Come a little closer, huh, a-will ya, huh?
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona
Keepin' it a mystery, it gets to me
Runnin' down the length of my thigh, Sharona

Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, woo!

M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona (Yeah!)

When you gonna give to me, g-give to me
Is it just a matter of time, Sharona?
Is it d-d-destiny, d-destiny
Or is it just a game in my mind, Sharona?

Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, woo!
M-m-m-m-m-m-m-my, my, my, aye-aye, woo!

M-m-m-my Sharona

Really love the guitar solo, but the lyrics are wat too creepy.

Different thinking about youth and sexuality back then. Woody Allen released "Manhattan" in which the lead, a 42 year-old writer for TV (played by Woody) has a romantic relationship with a precocious 17 year-old (Mariel Hemingway). It was a huge hit and is regarded as one his best films.

I was a teenager when "My Sharona" came out. My friends and I thought it was catchy but stupid and OTT--like a guy who's always making sexual references and comments. The Knack seemed obsessed with sex.

In some ways, our society is a lot more sexualized now. The Internet made sexual references and content easily available. But we are a lot more aware and intolerant of sexual abuse and assaults.

Actually, no. Doug was engaged to Sharona. Even though they broke up, she took care of him while he was dying.
Sharona is a successful real estate agent in Los Angeles.
The album cover looks like they just "burned one".    LOL!

The 45 single version cut a full minute from the solo compared to the album edit. One of the best guitar solos ever.

It was the dark side of the Sexual Revolution of the '60's coming to the surface.
i'd kind of like to hear Paolo Nuntini's - Jenny Don't Be Hasty after this. same kind of...theme?

Was even worse way back...   Gary Puckett, Young Girl... and so many more lol.  My daughter asked me once, what's with all this pedophile shit?   My my, the times do change... (thank the gods)
One of the greatest  and most underrated  guitar solos of all time.

This is a timeless classic. Not one one bad song on this album. All of it deriving from the muse that WAS Sharona.

Thank you Sharona Alperin

Yeah ok. It’s a hormone fueled rave but crank it up! Used to do that a lot.
No thanks.  This can stay on a Sirius way back channel...

Exceptional & undeerrated guitar solo in this often-scorned pop ditty.
Ma, ma, ma, my SCAROTOM!

Sorry folks, that's what we sang in our junior year of high school when this song came on the radio.
I'll never be able to hear the Queen 'version' properly.  Ever since my sister told me that, because of it's fine acoustics,  Al used a women's bathroom in a dormitory at Cal Poly SLO to record the 'Yankovich version', my brain's sing-along lyric captions read "My Bologna".  This always prompts me to listen to "Another One Rides the Bus" and, maybe, run my entire Wierd Al playlist.

Listening to his music always makes me smile.  Grinning is always indicative of a mood upswing.  Music is a great catalyst for that kind of attitude shift.
I can only remember a tv music show with the "solid gold dancers", gyrating to this song.

Wooooo woooooo.
Overplayed! ...but, brings back memories! Not a bad tune, but, not great!
When this song came out, I was dating a girl from Cleveland. and it was overplayed on the radio there. I didn't live there, just visited. We hated it! Now it brings back fond memories!
Back in the summer of 1980, I was working at the Chevon Research Lab on the east side of Los Angeles, in La Habra And someone sang, to this tune: Your Belinda (get it?). And the Go Go’s were big then too …. Can’t not sing that 40 years later …

Aye that Bill is a clever one... Ravel's Bolero segue to My Sharona. Not sure if in the history of the universe that has been done, or thought of before.
Remember hearing this on KROQ in Hollywood in the late 70s/early 80s along with Nick Gilder's Hot Child in the City, Lou Reed's I Wanna Be Black, Eddie and the Hot Rods' Do Anything You Wanna Do, Talking Heads Don't Worry About the Government, Blondie's Look Good in Blue -- the domino effect of memory that only music can induce. This song will always be Hollywood Blvd to me.
Nice to hear, after the Dweezil Zappa performance last week in Utrecht. He played the same song

When I was young and goofy, I used to do the same at parties. Back then hard rock and heavy metal were the "cool thing". There's nothing more satisfying to "shower" a pumped-up crowd with Shubert's "Ständchen", Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" or even Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". :)
I feel my IQ tumbling listening to this excremental nonsense. *Hits skip button*
Nostalgia 8.
I see this is a repeating pattern - Bolero to My Sharona... perfick.

And again just now. The segue is a bit...jarring but hey it's fun.

The way I remember it, The Knack took some heat even among my teen peers for panting an awful lot about sex in this and their other hits. But for some reason--maybe because the playing is so tight--this isn't a nostalgia piece.
That song is a pop music footnote.
I didn't say stop!

Absolutely right. But perhaps one is immensely dumb to not like that simple trickster gimmicky but fun guitar break.

I have one I titled "Restraining Order" with "Spoonful" and "It's Now or Never" and Blondie "Call Me" and "I Put a Spell on You" and "Barrel of a Gun" and "I Will Possess Your Heart" and Adele's "Hello" and many more (an unnervingly large number of songs) of romantic obsessions that go way beyond OK. And of course the Police "I'll Be Watching You."

Might have to include this one, as well.

PS: You have Rolling Stones "Little Queenie" on your list, too, right?

Yes, looking back at those lyrics...  I think it was ALL of their songs that were just over the top with it.   But hey, it was working for AC/DC, so why not?  Times have changed.
This was one of the better one hit wonders from my school years. It's still good to work out to at the gym.

One of my first love song
truly a bad, way over-rated song. Popular only because it was new.
I love to hate this song, somehow original and it has drive, but at the same time such annoying vocals and guitar sound...
Man, that guitar solo!
 kingart wrote:
I've always loved the guitar break. The rest of the tune is either mediocre, annoying, or doesn't belong with the good part.

Yep, it's hard to get through most of it, as I think it was mediocre AND annoying. But, the axe-attack is pretty good. Can't believe it hasn't been mentioned (was everyone else afraid to be too obvious?) but that solo sounds greatly influenced by "I Need a Lover" from then-Johnny Cougar, done in '78, just a year previous. (Interesting that Pat Benatar covered Cougar's tune, too, in 1979, and got much air play with it.)
Bill, please let us in on the theory behind Bolero followed by My Sharona! LLRP!
It's popularity may have over-shadowed the terrific guitar solo.

first late 70s American band to bring back The
Pure nostaligic '79 pop. It was the right place, right time situation...as an antidote to the end of the disco era. Not quite alternative, not quite punk...but a nice influence into this tune. I liked it then...love it now. Thanks, RP.

A good example of being kind of "meh" when this song came on the radio then or now...but on RP it has a new, much deserved life!

I was working as a bartender during the summer of 1979. This song was played so often on the bar's jukebox that I began to hate it. I was glad when it fell out of favor. Always liked Weird Al's version.

Actually, this is an excellent example of overplay on the radio ruining a fun song with a phenomenal guitar jam.  I get it, some people hate it, but that doesn't automatically make it bad. Art, in whatever flavor or shape, is still art. And, this is one of my all time favorite songs, despite getting dumped by my first real love that year. Anything raunchy and wrong took the edge off! My Sharona and Good Girls Don't did it for me.

I feel sorry for the haters who didn't get The Knack.
They had it going there for about 6 MONTHS!

I guess I'm more impressed CREEM actually wrote an article about The Jam while they still existed!

I remember running out of church on a Sunday just before noon -asked my mom for the keys to the car so I could catch the end of ATF with Casey Kasem on the radio.  This song was #1.  And it rocked.
Was there too. Surprised to hear it here. It's all good. {#Cheers}

Sometimes a song comes down to a time and a place.  If you were there then, the song has resonance that cannot be reproduced if you weren't.  Was there = 8.

The song lyrics are infantile. But with a few beers or some weed, one might conclude that the guitar break earns its keep. I liked it a lot more in 1979.
