She packed my bags last night, pre-flight
Zero hour, nine A.M.
And I'm gonna be high
As a kite by then

I miss the Earth so much, I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no no no
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man
Burnin' out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man
Burnin' out his fuse up here alone

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact, it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them
If you did

And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job, five days a week
A rocket man
Rocket man

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man
Burnin' out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man
Burnin' out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time

Nice to see the lyrics.
always though he sang something like "Burning down the seas of Heaven."
Thanx to Trump, this tune will always remind me of Kim from N. Korea!  LOL!   GREAT TUNE!

I wonder how many people remember William Shatner's Priceline commercials from 2000.  He covered C.W. McCall's "Convoy" among others.

Yes and yes, so wrong
Elton's songs from this era are why Elton John is....Elton John.

Summer 1981, I was working as a roofer in North Texas, in between my freshman and sophomore years at Texas Tech.  We had this guy on our crew, Wade, who would go smoke a joint during break and then go back on the roof and claim he was a "Rocket Man" because he could nail down shingles faster than any of us.  Well, we put up with his bullshit until the day, after proclaiming he was the rocket-man, he fell off of the roof and broke his arm.  No more Wade, no more Rocket-Man!

Although I would in no way compare myself to Elton John, I'm also a pianist and composer and this was my preferred way of working (except that sadly my wonderful lyricist died a couple of years ago, and I haven't had the heart to find another).

Totally makes me tear up, every time. But Benny and the Jets video is jawdropping.
Literally a barnyard favorite...I play it in the barn when the goats get crabby and peace is instantly restored.
NASA had just landed Neil on the moon a few years before this song.  Now, all these years later we are headed for Mars. What a country we live in!
Few things are as enjoyable 😉 as listening to his music 🎶  from 1969 - 1972.
Fitting as I watched the amazing Apollo 11 doc last night. Collins was later interviewed, did you feel lonely when Eagle left Columbia and you were left alone circling the moon? No! I was full of anticipation, excitement, confidence and almost exultation!

Jean Shepherd told his late nite listeners to go to bookstores and ask for
"I, Libertine", a hoaxed novel...The thing took off and Ballantine Books
commissioned Theodore Sturgeon (Kilgore Trout...;-) to ghost write the
book to satisfy the demand...Another literary hoax was when my buddy
and I took his truck to every one of the Shakespeare & Co stores to pick
up all the unopened cases of the (also ghost written) Art of the Deal and
deliver 'em to the Trump Tower...And that, my friends, is how Donald
Trump got "his" book on the best sellers list...

Being on the road performing. Many touring artists say it's like living on another planet. The equipment (science) is overwhelming. Sure it's not as linear as, say 'Turn The Page', but the meaning is the same.

As a huge fan of Sir Elton, I went into it expecting it to be terrible. But Taron Egerton is terrific. He looks a bit like a young Elton, and he sings everything himself, no lip-synching.

Definitely recommend it.

FWIW, you can get a preview of Taron's "Elton" work in the animated movie Sing - which in and of itself I found to be very entertaining.
Just for today
Fantastic song The movie was so cool much better than I thought it would be I think it’s gonna be a long long time
“the laws of physics I don’t understand...” is certainly true about this song. It’s still great music though!

Weird, isn't it.  I'd just started secondary school and if I sit and just listen to this quietly I can see, feel and smell the place in my mind's eye.  Shame I can't remember what I did yesterday.

Just saw him two weeks ago in Las Vegas, and it was such an extraordinary show that I got tickets to see him in San Francisco a week later (and it didn't hurt that Stubhub called to say they needed to upgrade our tickets!). Of course he did this song, but the whole show was incredible. I've been a fan since I was 12, and am now considering going to London next year for his final shows.

I was 15 and my best friend liked Elton John a lot. I liked this song.
Our Dad's were in the Navy, and we lost touch with each other after that.
59 now and when I hear this, it does that thing to me that songs can do, you know?

If you're out there John Richardson . . . . . . . It's been a long, long time . . . .

1974/75 - Marrington Circle, NWS - Charleston, South Carolina - Goose Creek Gators

Overplayed? Of course. And I sing along every time I hear it.

Quality never grows old.
A really good song -- that for me was really murdered forever by ad infinitum FM plays. I'm gonna psd.

Alright, already! Please...it isn't my ignorance...it's my patience with all this technicality authorship. Of course, Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics and Sir Elton wrote the music. I knew this then and still. It's the general output is what I'm referring to in my previous comment. Sheeesh! I also didn't indicate the producer and sound engineer of this album...it doesn't change the sentiment.

Average rating of 8.5 with a huge spike in the 9 group !

This was one of the first singles I bought, and I still love it decades later. It was fitting for the time, in which the 'space race' was a recurrent theme. Our Reg sure knows how to spin a toon. It does help that he's been Watford FC through-and-through from childhood, and is now life president of the club. As we 'Orns chanted, mantra-like, in the club's 80s glory days: "Elton John's Taylor-made army!".

Apologies to innocents abroad to whom the arcane world of lower-league English football is as familiar as particle physics.

Elton Quote from From a recent Rolling Stone Article regarding this song:
"Rocket Man"
Honky Château, 1972

The first huge single that I had. "Your Song" was a hit; "Rocket Man" was a big hit. It had an acoustic guitar on it, it was a different song for me – it was a simpler sound. I'd moved into a house, I was becoming successful, I was so confident, musically. Everything was to do with the music – touring, recording, radio interviews, photo shoots and "What are we going to do next?"

This song is absolutely gorgeous...  love it...

Simply perfection. Those days, the days of Madman Across the Water, Tumbleweed Connection and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road gone but immortalized in plastic.

Yes I am!
Makes me think of Ray Bradbury. RIP.
This song is a "10". Soundtrack to the year when I was 14, and played this album to death. Nothing else to say.

Oh, except that I've met Sir Elton.  Seriously.

Would be funny if it was tho.

I never understood how NASA would allow an astronaut's wife to pack up the gear he would need for the mission. They have, like entire departments tasked with this responsibility. Talk about your bossy and controlling spouse.

"But honey, I can't even wear these boxers under the spacesuit. Where would the urine and feces tubes go."
The perfect E.J. song for the last space launch that we all just watched on CNN.
Nice timing since the last shuttle just took off.

Very appropriate. Well done. :)

Prolly my favorite EJ song live.  Saw the F2F tour as it went thru Cleveburg a couple of years ago.  He stretched it out to nearly 20 delightfully hook filled minutes.
The real ROCKET era man.

On sad note, we now know that Leon is suffering a great deal of pain (bone cancer, I think?) so he was being a real trouper that night.

  Exactly.

I recently listened thru Tumbleweed, Madman and Honky Chateau.  They were three masterpieces of the album format.

This one is a nice addition to the playlist....  in moderation.  And to everyone out there, Mister Shatner has the definitive cover.  If you've never seen it.... go, now, partake.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hARDXYz2io

As usual - too verbose to be the first comment  - and no - not wrong to prefer Kate's version - but never having heard it.  I really can't compare.
