This album has a particular melancholy-yet-hopeful vibe; while I think you have to be in the right mindset to enjoy it to its fullest from start to finish, it's definitely worth letting it wash over you. Probably the best way to enjoy this album - it also works particularly well as an accompaniment on long car journeys. 

Coincidentally when this LP came out I gifted a copy to a sibling who later said it got them through a challenging time in their life, with some very relevant meaning in this song and others like You Are a Tourist.

I think it was the Buffalo Beast (RIP) that described Death Cab for Cutie best: every song is the part of normal songs that crescendos up to the high point, without ever actually getting there. Just a frustrating, repetitive listening experience.

Upped my rating from 8 to 9.  Love the heavy rhythm section!  Bass is tipped towards treble pickup and might even have round-wound strings ... nice.

Totally agree. The last part of the song, with its unyielding and repetitive drums, is lazy as anything. No variety in it and as a result I have got to the stage where I now find it very tedious to listen to. Please retire it from the playlist, at least for a while!

I logged in to say that the very beginning of this track, the part with the cool drums, reminds me of the song "I Looked at You" from The Doors' debut album The Doors.  Odd that DCfC has "Doors" in this song's title.

In a Southern vernacular, "open" door means that it "can" be opened.  "I left the door open for you" means you can open it when you get there; it's not locked. Not literally swung open.This is in the same vein of "knock knock" then "come on in, the door's open."

It's not likely; Kashmir is a pretty obscure band, probably not widely known outside of Northern Europe and especially unknown to most Americans, and there are hundreds of other songs which sound similar.

The song let me recall a band of my youth : "Can" (former "The Can"). They made somekind of psychedelic krautrock - allthough they denied to be called a "rockband". I once heard and saw them live in concert at "Fabrik" in Hamburg here in Germany in the mid 70ies - it was great! I looked around at iTunes and astoundingly found only four tracks on samplers. But via wikipedia, I found their website: "spoonrecords.com"
They had a great hit called "Spoon", which was a soundtrack for a tv-film "Das Messer" in three parts (from the story "the knife" by Francis Durbridge). When it ran on tv, it made the streets empty :-)) That was, when there where only three tv-channels in Germany.
