I was laughing
Playing in the streets, I was unknowing
I didn't know my fate
Playing
The game of love, but never really showing
I thought that love could wait
I was a young man and sure to go astray
You walked right into my life
And told me love would find a way

To keep on growing
Keep on growing
Keep on growing

I was standing
Looking in the face of one who loved me
Feeling so ashamed
Hoping
And praying, Lord, that she could understand me
But I didn't know her name
She took my hand in hers and told me I was wrong
She said, "You're gonna be all right, boy
Oh, just as long"

"As you keep on growing
Keep on growing
Keep on growing"
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Maybe
Someday baby, who knows where or when, Lord
Just you wait and see

We'll be walking
Together hand in hand, along forever
Woman just you and me

Cause time is gonna change us
Lord, and I know it's true
Our love is gonna keep on glowing
And growing and it's all we gotta do

Keep on growing
Keep on growing
Keep on growing
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Keep on growing
Keep on growing
Keep on growing

Great track from a true classic album
Thanks!

personally saw quaaludes make more people stupid than just about any other drug, including alcohol. thought of them as horse tranquilizers and they probably were used for this.

PS one of my favorite albums I bought in the early 70s, along with Who's Next
I had this at an 8... bumped to 9. One has to realize that there are at least three guitars going on here, all doing something different, some of the musicians are strung out on heroin and booze... but the energy is palpable and the "mess" sounds magnificent.

One of my desert island discs, I could listen this album forever and never get bored.
Fantastic stuff and a great album.
My favourite track is "Bell Bottom Blues"
wow. i totally missed this one. thanks!

Yeah but Clapton seems to dismiss this type of his old music. He apparently hates Cream's live version of "Crosssroads" which has some of the best solos I've ever heard.

Frankly, I think he should have lost a year of playing privileges for out "Lay Down Sally."

You borrow your handle from a classic and write literate comments, not to include the above, yet consign this and "Elizabeth Reed" to the ash heap.  At least they have plenty of good company with Dylan, Weather Report, Jeff Beck and Little Feat.   Also, you may be in my "too much time on your hands" clique for listening to the entire thing while hating it.

I myself am largely interested in the music itself.  And how I was often in my dorm room, a coveted 14' X 8' single, in college in Back Bay Boston in 1976 at 2 a.m. stoned out of my ever hash and speed lovin mind listening to this crank out over my headphones and gazing on the Charles River, or having wondrous sex with one of two ladies at the time, or just enjoying the view of crack of dawn Storrow Drive looking out toward MIT and getting serenaded by Eric and the Layla crew.  What a great paradise I had, and this is some of the soundtrack to it, and Eric may be a knucklehead in his senior years (or earlier), but if you were destined to be an a**hole at age 75, wouldn't you still agree to be a master of this sound at 25?

Correct about Dave Mason. Duane played on most of the album, but not on this track.

No, I ate less/drank less/smoked less weed to HAVE more bread to buy records.  THEN I got a great job in a record store in Kenmore Square in Boston and I got a lot of my records for free -- promo copies, defectives, cast offs, etc.

Where have the years gone?
One of the greatest tracks on one of the all time great albums.
Clapton's finest work.
Those. . . Guitars!
In 1976 I used to gaze out at the Charles River and Storrow Drive, Boston blasting this (whole album) in my ear phones at 2 a.m.   Often amped by decent smokeables (of course way before the GMO varieties) and 90 proof liquid fire. Memories and such being what they are, this may be in my top 20 all time pieces of music.

Keep trying.  Many see it as his best work.  Although, all the drugs in the studio at the time apparently made  for some cacophonous moments.

This was one of my top 5 albums back in the early 70's. Always nice to hear something from it. Duane Allman kicks on this album.
This song reminds me of a very bad crush I had on a fella back in '94.
This song reminds me of an old friend who really made me laugh on the dance floor. Danny are you out there? In Santa Cruz still ?

How can anyone feel anything but happy hearing this song? I disagree with the comment below, I agree with the others that this was definitely Clapton at his peak. Yeah, he's done some great stuff since then but nothing as consistently good as this record. Come on, how do you beat the pairing of he and Duane Allman? Nope, yain't gonna convince me otherwise.
All these comments about this being a "peak" for Clapton. Sure, it's a v.good track, and the album was a peak in his career, bit not the peak. He had many peaks and there are still more to come, God willing.

I love this song, and I love this album! I also love the remake fomr 1990 with the scream at the beginning! thanx!
I'm going against the tide here. I thought this track was kind of formulaic. The "ree-dee ree-dee ree-dee" guitar solos are just so hackneyed. I do agree that this was a peak for Clapton though - just not this specific tune.
