Coming in from London from over the pole
Flying in a big airliner
Chicken flying everywhere around the plane
Could we ever feel much finer
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in a couple of ki's
Don't touch my bags if you please
Mister customs man, yeah
There's a guy with a ticket to Mexico
No, he couldn't look much stranger
Walking in the hall with his things and all
Smiling, said he was the Lone Ranger
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in a couple of ki's
Don't touch my bags if you please
Mister customs man
Hip woman walking on the moving floor
Tripping on the escalator
There's a man in the line and she's blowing his mind
Thinking that he's already made her
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in a couple of ki's
Don't touch my bags if you please

So, he's a. . . locksmith? Yeah, what else could that possibly mean.

We had great seats (small and fantastic venue), but there were few instances without the microphone and stand blocking him. While his approach may seem kind of lackadaisical and "we're making this up as we go along", it really isn't. He is a wonderful guitarist and pianist (as well as singer, songwriter and monologuist)
All rights reservedLove it! Was just playing this LP recently....

Ah...the good ol days of flying!
Good stuff! Preparing me for Arlos annual visit to the Newberry Opera House in about a month!

Hey Bill, Joe Ely's "Boxcars" would sound good with this!
It's not my line, folks. It's something I used to hear old timers say when I was a kid. I always loved that sort of language, though.

This brings back memories.
Somehow, I don't think Arlo would have been successful if not for the era AND his famous Daddy....
In other words, how would this song rate if it did NOT have the history it does?

A perfect aural snapshot of the times...1967 and, sadly, 2008. Thank you, Arlo.
We should also thank Officer Obie. Even though he was not involved in this particular tune, his participation in the incident which spawned Alice's Restaurant may have changed the culture a bit.

Always liked the Woodstock version of this much better. This one is a little too country. You can hardly hear his vocals.

People can't help it when they are ahead of their time, they pull forward those that still drag behind...

this song takes me back. like a little time machine. i wonder what would happen if this song came out today. we would take arlo and drop him off somewhere in iraq
How true is that?!
I was twice fortunate back then; I stayed out of the madness in Vietnam and got to see him perform at the, now gone, Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, CA. It's sad that much of his work, and many other's of that time, still applies today. He did this as well as the entire Alice's Restaurant. And I wasn't too stoned to forget the experience!
Love the guit on this version!
Alices' was such a great album in the day.......

Hippie Dippie protest crap. really bad recording too. I don't like this at all.
Goo, too bad everything you listen to in american rock and pop dates back to the 60s/early 70s protest crap. Guess you are an Elvis fan and I don't mean Costello.

So. Good.
Frank Black has occasionally covered this song in concert, and his version is amazing. For me, it's a lot better than this one.

DON'T TOUCH MY BAGS IF YOU PLEASE MR. CUSTOMS MAN
and doesn't that mean something altogether different today - sigh

Just realized how ancient I am -- knowing Arlo Guthrie songs!
I like the Peppers, and Arlo rocks too. Now for this L.A. theme, what next? The Doors - L.A. Woman?
Haven't heard it in 30 years but can still sing along like it was yesterday.
Those were the days. Dogs were for petting.
