I think Ray Wylie Hubbard had Dylan's hoot in mind.

Song: Conversation with the Devil
Artist: Ray Wylie Hubbard
Album: Crusades of the Restless Knights
One Dylan's most fun and witty songs. Always a gas to hear.

Just then this cop comes down the street, crazy as a loon
He throws us all in jail for carryin' harpoons
Personally, I think this is just an acid trip's narrative and nothing more.  If you are gleaning some deep sociological message out of this, I suggest you're missing Mr. Dylan's point here: life is an adventure, so get on with it.

By the way, it was NOT played today.  Last comment is from 2005.  I just wanted to see if this was in the All-Encompassing Catalog, and, of course, it is.

Dylan calling for social activism in a lyrical "trip" verisimilar to the clever absurdity of Jonathan Swift's Modest Proposal. The irony of the song is of most people, like Dylan's character in his dream, who do not return to help their comrades imprisoned by society even when they understand the hypocracity of the situation - even when professing the shield of Christianity! - and they are satisfied that "tails rhyme's with sails." And the Irish have been eating their children ever since... And outstanding masterpiece never yet played on RP.
Absolutely brilliant song - how about this line ?..... I flipped a coin to see if should go back to the ship or jail It came up tails which rhymes with sails so I headed back to the ship.... Well damn - tails rhymes with jails too - makes me laugh every time
My first favorite dylan song....so long ago....hitchhiked a lot in those days. Ever notice how few hitchhikers there are now?

Right ON! "The last I heard of Ahab, he was stuck on a whale That was married to the deputy Sheriff of the Jail" ...That line cracks me up everytime.
See? Dylan can loosen a bit........
Please ! Stop with this torture ! I hate Bob\'s voice... it\'s horrible, how can anyone like this kind of songs, I don\'t understand how can an artist with that ugly voice become so famous, and also a USA\'s music icon. Thanks I am not north american !!!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG!!! What a story ...I challenge anyone to make it through this song without a smile on their face!
I love this song...it\'s so whacked out and zany. Dylan is so weird in such a good way
114 dreams too many, I think.
one of my fave dylan tunes ever. and with the band on backup.
This song has the same tune as the equally goofy Motorpsycho Nightmare off of Highway 61 Revisited.
:D I love Dylan\'s silly songs like this one. Can\'t help but smile. :p
