When the trees are crowned with leaves
When the ash and oak, and the birch and yew
Are dressed in ribbons fair
When owls call the breathless moon
In the blue veil of the night
The shadows of the trees appear
Amidst the lantern light
We've been rambling all the night
And some time of this day
Now returning back again
We bring a garland gay
Who will go down to those shady groves
And summon the shadows there
And tie a ribbon on those sheltering arms
In the springtime of the year
The songs of birds seem to fill the wood
That when the fiddler plays
All their voices can be heard
Long past their woodland days
We've been rambling all the night
And some time of this day
Now returning back again
We bring a garland gay
And so they linked their hands and danced
Round in circles and in rows
And so the journey of the night descends
When all the shades are gone
"A garland gay we bring you here
And at your door we stand
It is a sprout well budded out
The work of Our Lord's hand"
We've been rambling all the night
And some time of this day
Now returning back again
We bring a garland gay
This song is exactly why I listen to Radio Paradise. You absolutely never know what you're going to get, and sometimes you get something that just makes you sit back, close your eyes and and listen.
What a voice!
PS: a lot of RP commenters do not seem to notice her musical diversity & the recording/ production diversity. Some of her tunes sound like you are sitting front row/ center, and others sound like you are listening from the rear of a cathedral.
Too funny!
Probably not if you have to pause to type about it.
Typed after finishing?
I don't live in Philly, I live in the South, where we don't get the Mummers Parade. We did see them when I was a child in Jersey, and loved them. Is there any difference from the Kreues in New Orleans Mardi Grad? What a great wonderful creative country we live in!
I have only seen the Mummers Parade on TV. GREAT show!
Blessed be to all witches. As above, so below. As within, so without.
I believe they prefer to be called, "Wiccans."
Holy Toledo!
There's a lot of Loreena McKennitt being played today. I think I have heard this song at least twice today already...among several others. There is such a thing as Overplay (that's why most people are sick & tired of Stairway To Heaven).
Huh? Maybe if you were tuned to the World/Eclectic mix -- and something was broken. But this song currently plays every 2 or 3 weeks on the Main Mix.
Maybe it's because Bill played this right after some Dan Hicks monstrosity, but this is hitting all the right spots right now.
The Dan Hicks thing was a bit dire wasn't it
I’ve been sick of STH since November 8, 1971 (the day it was released)

I've been sick of Stairway to Heaven since 1974.
We do too even after 25 years :-)
Bring on the Night preceded it on this playlist.
Zed is right. Response was to song played prior on the playlist. And I understand Sting was probably tired and not enthusiastic about promoting his album by way local appearances outside performances. But man, I apparently still harbor a grudge against Sting for being human and not meeting my expectations.
I met Sting and the rest of the members of the Police as they were promoting their debut album at a Peaches record store (remember them?). One of the most unpleasant exchanges I have ever had was talking to Sting. I was a member of a popular local band and admired the Police's music but Sting is a dick.
What do these comments have to do with this LM track?

Though I am willing to recognize with a few decades of perspective that perhaps I was missing something.

Interesting! My brother was in a warmup band for Sting and my brother said the very same thing!

Is this here because you meant to comment on Bring On The Night?
New Years Day in Philly.
Interesting! My brother was in a warmup band for Sting and my brother said the very same thing!
I hate mummers though. Still have nightmares of Boris Karloff.
Or was it Karla Bonoff?
No, no. Pretty sure it was Boris.

Inspired me to look up mummers

Dear God help us! I'm a lifelong Philadelphia (suburbs) native and I can't stand the Mummers!!!
Ok, that made me laugh.
I am in The Netherlands too
That answers one question, I guess.

Not what I would have chosen, but that's why I return again and again.

Really… rated 1.2 points higher than the brilliant Joni Mitchell song from a few minutes ago… sometimes I dunno what people are hearing that I'm not.
Hard to believe as I find this song as equally annoying as any Joni Mitchell song. PSD.
Its like "Second Line" in New Orleans. So many people just don't get it, but they all have fun. So let'em.
More like WAAAAAHHHH!!!!
Hey guys, this is not a rock 'n roll station. If you want high powered rock 24/7 go to K or W blah blah blah, all the hits all the time.
So simply and clearly stated!! Way to go gemtag
I can handle about :20 seconds of it, then...can't...fight...mouse....it's.....too.....powerful.......going....for........PSD....button....<>
Mummer is an old word which Wiktionary defines as:
mummer (plural mummers)
- A person who dons a disguising costume, as for a parade or a festival.
- An actor in a pantomime; one who communicates entirely through gesture and facial expression.
Just don't need exposure to this anymore...

Music.
Roger that. I use a Tivoli Audio Model Two buried here in the cubicle farm. The stereo separation is lovely, and the tone is what you would expect from a Henry Kloss design. In the home office, I have Audio Engine A2 powered speakers—just the right size for an otherwise crowded work space with enough oomph that, when the occasion warrants (like this song), you can crank 'em up without worrying about distortion.

Absolutely! IMHO (wouldn't call myself an audiophile) this works great as a reference tune for testing hi-fi equipment.
Agreed. And I would consider myself an audiophile. Sounds great on my modest 2 channel set-up. Wide sound stage, lots of detail and as you mentioned: fantastic production.
First "Ludovico the terrible" and now "Loreena the unbearable":
Loreena McKennitt - The Mummers Dance
Ludovico Einaudi - Divenire
Maybe some Wailin' Jenny? :)
edit: Nope, there is hope, people that are listening to this set again. There will Led Zeppelin after it.
It's likely an historical reference. She crafts many of her songs from past legends and folklore.
Just don't need exposure to this anymore...
YAAAAWWWWWNNNNNNN
I'm not a Loreena fan by the way (zzzzzzz), but I do love Kate. :)
Still their loss not mine. 9
BTW I think Loreena was talking about 15th C onwards mummers not those overdressed versions.
Yo Philly!
Love it - the reality of these Mummers and the wispy stuff on the Loreena song - which I liked well enough to grab for my mp3 collection - are so far apart it boggles the mind that they could have the same name.
Amen Brother. Gotta kill the soft crap.
This is a very funny comment, but I don't think it's apt. I love hobbits and I love this song, but I don't think hobbits would love this song. Hobbits, though excellent in so many ways, tend to be prosaic and unimaginative. This song is ethereal and mysterious - more Elven than hobbitlike by far.
But as long as we can agree this is a lovely song, I guess it doesn't matter whether hobbits would like it or not.
