25 years and my life is still
Tryin' to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this brotherhood of man
For whatever that means

And so I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out what's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
"What's going on?"

And I say, hey-ey-ey
Hey-ey-ey
I said "Hey, a-what's going on?"
And I say, hey-ey-ey
Hey-ey-ey
I said "Hey, a-what's going on?"

Ooh, ooh
Ooh
Ooh, uh huh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh
Ooh, uh huh

And I try
Oh my God, do I try
I try all the time
In this institution

And I pray
Oh my God, do I pray
I pray every single day
For revolution

And so I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out, what's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
"What's going on?"

And I say, hey-ey-ey
Hey-ey-ey
I said "Hey, what's going on?"
And I say, hey-ey-ey
Hey-ey-ey
I said "Hey, a-what's going on?"
And I say, hey-ey-ey
(Wake in the morning and step outside)
Hey-ey-ey
(Take a deep breath and I get real high)
(And I scream)
I said "Hey, a-what's going on?"
And I say, hey-ey-ey
(Wake in the morning and step outside)
Hey-ey, yeah yeah yeah
(Take a deep breath and I get real high)
(And I scream)
I said "Hey, a-what's going on?"

Ooh, ooh
Ooh
Ooh, uh huh

25 years and my life is still
Tryin' to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination, mmm

Very good Lyrics. Not a fan of the music and voice tough. When I was a child and didn't understand the lyrics, it was a sound synonymous with overplayed radio pop in the 90s for me. But as always... a matter of taste.  Not shaming the artist or the fans of the song.

I absolutely love that scene to bits.
Great song, love the vocal inflection, cynical and hopeful at the same time...kinda how I feel most days
Late to the party here, but I also love this song.  Not just the lyrics but the emotion she sings with.
But for some reason I always think of Journey when I hear this song.  Strange?
still a fucking great song man 👍

Woke is another word that Fox, DeLoser, et al. have weaponized because, in their limited view, there is something terrible in progressive thinking or in thinking about what's best for society rather than oneself.

I don't think you've thought your thoughts through quite enough - Mr. My side is the right side no matter what. Please, think harder and better. It will benefit us all.
Surprised at hardly any references to the He-Man meme.

Strange to think at the time, the original song was only 13 years old.  Now the meme itself is almost 20 years old.

The 'song' speaks for itself!
Play Dolly's duet version instead. It's 1000% better.

The end.
FFS.  No.

All the "woke" stuff aside, there aren't thet many Female  'power' songs (vs say, Queen 'We Are The Champions')
I submit this as a *very* excellent Female- based "Power Ballad".
easy 8/10 from me.

Y'know, after not listening to terrestrial radio for all these years, this song really isn't that bad.

In spite of all the negative comments i still love this song.
Clearly a PSD song

The lyrics aren't very good either.

Nah mate. If they had a chart for 'the worst songs ever', this one wouldn't even be in the top ten...

My younger brother recently posted part of the chorus on FB and got a reply from my younger sister, the next line. I didn't recognize it at all. So  he sent me the YouTube version of it. AMAZING! What a voice, what harmonies at the end...great band I never heard of before. And now to learn they've been gone a long time too...where have I been?
I wonder if this is not worth a 10, what is.
Raving reviews, and 7.6 average?
God I hate this song.
This was "Grunge Lite" back in the day.
here, where I live, the most popular radio stations play this song few times for a day. I'm sick of it. No thanks
Some days Linda's screaming in the song is good and some days it really grates on the nerves.

Wow. Really excited about Linda Perry. I get it.
Uh Boy, I always thought this was Johnette Napolitano.
Guess I need to look at Now Playing more often......

It would be with considerably less dynamics and with lots of heavy breath sounds to signify emotion!

Remarkable to think that this came out 30 years ago but man,it’s still a great song!
This is one of those songs I remember not liking when it came out, though maybe owing to my "old soul" persona, I also remember knowing I would like it one day later in life.
And damn, it's been a grip since I last heard this. That day is today! 8 rated and Long Live RP!!
What a bomb! Feels exactly the same as the first time I heard this song. If managed properly, that woman's energy could be weaponized.
I remember the first time I heard this song. I can't say that about a lot of songs. It left an impression because it gave me such a feeling of hopefulness, freedom, and possibility. Also, I just liked the music!
HEY!!!
Wow. Brings back a lot of memories. What a great song! Thanks for playing this Bill.
Great song, Nice to hear again. Am I the only one who noticed that this song sounds a bit like bobby mc Ferrins "don't Worry be happy" ?

One of those 'soundtrack of my life' tracks. LOUD, late at night, laying on the floor singing at the top of my lungs.
Life was messy, it was the 90's what can I say - and it still makes me sing.

Different, one would presume.
Sitting at my kitchen table, working with my headsets on (pandemic style work-from-home) listening to RP, of course, and I couldn't help myself from signing the "hey-ey-ey"'s.  Meanwhile, my 19 yr-old daughter making her dinner, only hearing my warbling (I'm not a great singer but ok with music guiding me) started singing the verses -- she recognized the song from just the refrain!  That's a testament to this song because she was born in 2002 and I don't think I've ever played it for her in the house before. So off came the headsets and we rocked out to the rest of the tune!  Thanks RP for a great parent-kid moment.
Wow.  It's been so long since I've heard this track that I forgot it existed.  A really good song that I always glued to.  More, good, again, louder.
There are exactly 420 ratings at this moment.
And poof it was gone

Once a decade is once too many

Dean Ween: I don’t remember where I was, or what I was doing, but I remember hearing it and thinking, “This is the most obnoxious f@cking hollering I’ve ever heard in my life.” I could envision the horrible, horrible female that was singing it, and I knew that it was gonna be a hit, just by how bad I hated it. I knew that it was going to be played for years by every f@cking bad girl band that came through my local bar, and sung on every karaoke night for the rest of time. I was just instantly overcome with a sense of dread, and of course it’s all come to pass.
*that He-Man meme flashbacks*
HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA
I liked this the first time I heard it and still do.
Wow! Thanks, RP!
Hell's teeth, not heard this for a while and made my whole body tingle!! 9
Wow, haven't heard this in forever!! And first time hearing here!
really?
Took me straight back to that year, first cd on new stereo, bad relationship, oh well, memories, still think this song is good
once a decade works for me.
