Not sure why this is Steely Dan's fault, but for what it's worth, I live in California and we had our own bushfires recently. Not sure if the Dan was responsible for those either, but I doubt it too.

Steely Dan is a terrific live band much to my surprise since I always thought of them as studio wizards. I saw them in Portland Oregon a couple of years ago. Their songs really come alive in concert and as is expected the band is comprised of only the best players.
This is true. The songs are the bedrock on top of which some great musicians get a chance to show off their musicianship. I caught them thrice in a row in 2017 and it was never boring. Great players, great arrangement. Well worth your time, even now that Walt is gone. (He had kinda checked out long before.)
I caught them back in the 80's when they really started to tour somewhat regularly. Was thinking how in the hell are they going to make things sound even close to what they did in the studio. Though plenty of people don't care for Steely Dan, I don't think they're as polarizing as those two bands you named. Steely Dan has a broader appeal; they had several Top 40 hits, neither Tull nor Rush have.

the boys who were the next gen "wrecking crew" - "hired guns" (both really good movies on netflix) - all agreed that if one of them got invited to play session with steely dan that was about as good as it got.

When the discussion of guitar heroes comes up, the guys who played with Steely Dan seem to be left out. That's not right.
Steely Dan is a terrific live band much to my surprise since I always thought of them as studio wizards. I saw them in Portland Oregon a couple of years ago. Their songs really come alive in concert and as is expected the band is comprised of only the best players.

I was a huge Steely Dan fan back in the day. Like most fans I only consider the "real" Steely Dan to have existed for those first 7 albums (although I do own the Two Against Nature CD).
I'm a pleasantly surprised to find someone else who rates Countdown to Ecstasy as their best album, and then Katy Lied as their second.

These guys defy music categories. Pop? Yes, a lot. Rock? Yes, a little, Jazz? Yes, a lot. Top 40? Yes, there's that, too. Fusion? I'd argue a few of their tunes fit that. Witty? Almost every one. Classical? Well, no, I guess. Hip-hop? Wasn't invented back then.

There was a band even better(though not as jazzy). . . Listen to the sense of timing on Tears For Fears recordings. Havn't heard perfect timing like that since Fats Waller.
