"When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love
When evening shatters and the stars appear
And there's is no one to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love
I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong
I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
No there's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love
The storms are raging on the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothin' like me yet
I could make you happy
Make your dreams come true
There is nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love"
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love
When evening shatters and the stars appear
And there's is no one to dry your tears

One of the things I like about RP is hearing different versions of familiar songs. I quite like this one - a nice stripped down version.
Oh no, this cover is sub zero compared to the one by Adele...
easily beats all other versions, including the original, with all due respect 😌

Or is it Ms. Osborne's version of it, that you feel is 'lame'? Perhaps you'd like his version better? Here: youtube.com/watch?v=fdWto-AUM3Q

You're right, it's not free. But paying money doesn't give anyone the right to be uncivil, rude and obnoxious as many of the people here are. For the life of me, I have no idea why some people post comments that they would never in a million years say to someone's face. That level of "discourse" doesn't help Bill and Rebecca improve the playlist, it only brands the commenter as ignorant and thus they probably get IGNORED.
For the record, I like the song.

Bill and Rebecca ask for our money so they can play music that we listen to. Part of that "subscription" is the right to bitch and moan and complain about the songs we think are crap. And also rave and praise the songs we love.
I give them a fair amount of money. More than what I would give sirius or XM. And in my honest "I paid for it" opinion, this song is lame.

Woof. Some folks git pritty uppity about their opinions. Reality check: free internet radio with an exceptional playlist 99% of the time. My opinion: as with every open-source project it will get better with input and feedback, but there are some pretty harsh words being thrown about. If you think Joan missed with this one, so be it. But she gave it a shot according to her lights. And to the person who asked "Why did she bother?", I suspect because she liked the song and wanted to sing it and hoped that others would like it, too. "Why did she bother?" How does a comment like that help anything? Why does anyone bother?
Go RP. Go Bill. Go Rebecca.

I think that Joan is trying to sound like Emmylou Harris.
if that was her (unlikely) intent, you've got to give her credit if she succeeded in making you think so.
ecorunner wrote:Thats not her style nor her strengths...Her voice needs to be in some song where she can let loose and be more edgy. Leave the folk to Emmylou Harris, Patti Griffin, and Gillian Welch.
that's an interesting opinion. what is your most apparent style/strength? have you defined and fixed your boundries as well?

You know, hearing Dylan sing this makes sense. Even Garth Brooks. The simple lyrics, with a deep withered voice, are haunting. With a "pretty" voice and tarted-up production, the lyrics become cheesy, like a Hallmark card.
She adds nothing to something already done. Why did she bother?

Nice. I like.
Don not forget that a HUGE part of Dylan's original was thanks to Daniel Lanois, who, by the way, had a boyhood home a few metres from I work in Gatineau (formerly Hull) Quebec. A charmant guy from a charmless town.
It's so sad that Ozzy never recognized her as his daughter. She would have been a bad ass heavy metal singer... better than Kelly.
Mediocre cover by a mediocre musician of one of Dylan's less-good songs. Just dull as dishwater. Ug. Why bother?
Yikes, what's with all the negative opinions.
I love the song and her rendition of it. I didn't know it was her. I thought, just before looking at this page:
"I love the way Emmy Lou Harris continues to incorporate Daniel Lanois's style from the Wrecking Ball days"

Wow, another fan (or two) of Luka's? I LOVE Luka Bloom... I would rather hear him than JO any day of any week in any year, sorry.
Bob Dylan, Bob Schmylan. The lyrics ARE juvenile. Why do people think Dylan is God? Moon. June. Spoon.
While it may not be her best work, I still like it. I also say bravo to her for trying something she doesn't normally do. We never learn anything about ourselves and our abilities until we challenge them.

Yeah, that Bob Dylan guy could use some schooling on lyric writing....

Yep, the perfect seduction - herbal tea, tofu, a little Joan. Next thing the hairy armpits come out and then it's all over.

I really detested her breakout "hit", "What If God Was One Of Us". In so many ways, that song just annoyed the heck out of me. It took me years to get around to checking other stuff of hers out, and discovering that some of it is damn good.
This, on the other hand, is even worse than the first.... :grumpy.gif:

My thoughts exactly when I heard first heard this. It sounds like Emmylou but without the etheral, spiritual quality that gives her voice such beauty. Does anyone have Joan Osborne's "My Love is Alive" from the KFOG benefit CD to upload?

God, I had no idea that several people covered this song. (see below)
Nobody beats Bob though.

I love "Relish." That album is so edgy.
When did Joan stop being edgy? Because, wow, she REALLY stopped.
I don't think that this is even close to as good as Trisha Yearwood does it.
Wasn't this in the movie Hope Floats?
I love the song and it's okay here.
But you can feel it right down to your toes with Trisha.

I guess you never know how much a performance affects the music until you hear a different one.

Man, you look like a skinny Garth Brooks
Saw her several years ago when I was travelling in India. We happened to be in Dharmshala (where the Tibetan government-in-exile is based) when they were having a benefit concert with a wide range of acts. It was pretty neat to hear her sing "One of Us" with the Dalai Lama in attendance!
So, I never really liked Joan Osborne, but I rarely dislike a good cover of this song.
Check out the Timothy B. Schmidt cover of this song. I think that he brings out the beauty of the tune....
Outstanding. I love, love, love this cover. It's so stripped down and yet so elegant.
I've been irritated with her ever since she "phoned in" a performance at a street fair in San Diego a few years ago. That said, this is very cool.
Whew...lots of negativity. I've been a big Dylan fan since the mid sixties, and this "cover" turned me on to Dylan's original. Anyway, I think Joan's version is fine, just fine.
Great version. No pop-country artist could give Bob Dylan's lyrics this much soul.
Well, I didn't even know this was a cover, so without prejudice, I can say I love it!

"wrote or cowrote"? So Joan scores a 74 out of 100 on the originality test? That's a relatively average score, mathematically speak its barely passing. If you're going to use those kinds of "mathematical" facts, why don't you give it some context and consider how many artist don't ever do covers?
i dont like this version (and i have the album)
it espesh jumps out when played back to back with another bob dylan classic makes you wonder - manfred mann, byrds covers were great because they were different from bob\'s original - joan just doesnt cut the mustard
Joan\'s first album?.. great..
Her covers? Leaves something missing...
Like the last three minutes of my life..
Try again Maam.
absolutely phenomenal recording.

Trisha's version is primo, blows Joan's off the map. Yearwood is one of my top vocalists.
I just heard her sing this last week as she opened for the Dixie Chicks - brilliant performance, really great interpretation of a really awesome song.
Beautiful song no matter who sings it!

Would I be geeky to say I like Billy Joel\'s version? Yeah...I thought so.

a mediocre cover of an EXCELLENT song. nice to hear a woman sing it anyway, if the lyrics don\'t match the voice.

joan\'s version good --- better than garth\'s, but dylan\'s is the best! there\'s just something about his desparate, scratchy, pleading voice that makes you believe him....
I really like this song - but her version isn\'t all that great.
I was surprised find out this was Joan. The vocals do not sound like her. I like the sparseness of the sound.

Bob Dylan keeps inspiring people (from streetmusicians to pro\'s) to cover his songs. New ones too! It\'s like he dashed off this song himself and already thought of other artists, to do it in the proper way. Joan Osborne, for instance, did it very nice and sober.
this one hits me very nicely this Sunday morning.
I definately agree XPat. I had just put an item on my active desktop when I checked to see what RP was playing.
It was a 13th cent Bronze 1,000-Armed Kannon, Bodhisattva of Compassion (aka Chenrezik in Tibet) from the Kyoto National Museum. And there was Joan singing of love and compassion, pure and clean and fierce and gentle.
Music as a herald of enlightened culture is up to whatever is brewed up by Bush & Co.
When the sh*t\'s deep around one\'s ankles it\'s good to think of Lotuses. Om Mani Padme Hum !!!
Nice set over the whole last 20 min. or so ( Tori Amos now)
Pearl Jam was an excellent next cut after Joan.
Radio Paradise Swaha !
A nice, spare ballad works every now and then, huh?
Adele does a beautiful version.
The Great Man Himself wrote it, so good news all round for me.
