Yeah, said it's all right
I won't forget
All the times I've waited patiently for you
And you'll do just what you choose to do
And I will be alone again tonight my dear

Yeah, I heard a funny thing
Somebody said to me
You know that I could be in love with almost everyone
I think that people are
The greatest fun
And I will be alone again tonight my dear

If I could give this an 11, I would.
This was a game changer when it was released....never tired of it since. Brings back good memories.

This and 7 and 7 is.

I was there then, too.  I was 15 though.  I left as well.

It sure was fun while it lasted.
UFO from the UK did a great cover of this on their Lights Out album in 1977 I believe.  Great vocals and Michael Schenker on lead guitar makes it special.  They made it a true rocker.
I like UFO's cover of this off the Lights Out album in the late 70's.
Fabulous. One of my favourite albums of all time. All the tracks are this good.
A great tune.

Look for the original version, by song writer Bryan MacLean on youtube.
I could totally understand that some would not get this at all these days.
Meanwhile, I find it so totally fantastic!

As others have pointed out, you have your cover and originals mixed up.  However, I do think that your point is good - a cover should add something or change things a bit; Calexico's version is just a straight copy.

Here's a link to a version by rock legends 'UFO' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

And a version by 'The Damned' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

which are not massively dissimilar to each other... (in my opinion)

Exceptional tune. UFO did an excellent cover of this.

Seriously?  This IS the ORIGINAL VERSION!  It came out in 1967.  I was listening to it on WNEW FM 102.7 (NYC) before the members of Calexico were born!!!  Dont't get me wrong, I love Calexico, they are a GREAT BAND!
Heard this the last two times on RP.  Also saw them on the great Laurel Canyon documentary.  Need to investigate more.
So happy LOVE has come onto the RP playlist. These guys were so far ahead of their time. Their playlist covers an extraordinary period in the awakening of so many to a newer reality for our time on the planet. Multiracial musicians playing in an uncommon arrangement. Forever Changing indeed.

What?!?  Not the Moody Blues?   RP
Take all my 10s
I sometimes wonder if I have given out 10 ratings too readily. But not in this case.
Right after this was released (in 1968), WNEW FM 102.7 NYC, used to play this tune a lot.  Great Tune!!

Some people mention memories, yes, yes yes!!!
I bought this album in the '60s. Great stuff!
The Damned also do a haunting version of this song
this band is most powerful on stage - seen them live @Sziget fesztival, 2013 , was awsome
Solid 10 for the horns!!
I was in LA when Love ruled the progressive pop universe.  Superb, well ahead of their time.  Arthur Lee was a mad genius.  Calexico is a worthy successor.

I love both but had forgotten the trumpets were on the original as well, they sound so mariachi I thought Calexico had added them
UFO does a great job of this tune
One of the greatest albums of all time.
Oh Bugger it! Just bumped it up to 10. Saw the Damned version t'other day & was reminded of just how bloody great this song is.
listening to RP is a musical education, going to explore the album now, thanks!

That horn section is why I went +1 to 9 today...LLRP!!
Love has many other unbelievably great songs that should be added to radio's playlist.

Ahh when this was played at the end of "Russian Doll" I went I know this song but not this version.. after a bit of searching I found that it was on the only UFO album I have. Mind you "Try Me" is my favourite song on the album.

Recommended buying this album to more than a few friends when it first came out
by tellin' 'em I'd buy it from them if they didn't love it...I didn't have to buy a single
copy...;-)
Trivia: How many other albums have a"The Persecution and Assassination of Jean
Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of Charenton Under the Direction of the
Marquis de Sade" reference in the lyrics...?-)
One of those rare songs that is timeless and could come out today and still be valid, well if remixed anyway.
9-10 for the cut. Higher for the album.
Thanks, "Russian Doll," for introducing me to this awesome song!

Stunning song from one of my favorite movies ever.

And which movie would that be?

According to Wikipedia:
The song has been featured in several films, most notably the 1996 films Bottle Rocket and Sleepers. It appeared at the close of the 2009 British comedy movie Bunny and the Bull, playing as the lead character finally breaks free of his obsessions. Alone Again Or was also featured in the climactic parade scene ending the last episode of season one of the 2019 Netflix series Russian Doll.
Bill, it'd be cool to hear this and Calexico's version back to back.
Best band ever. This album one of my top ever and particularly like this track. Love were a real surf band in Oz in the 60s
Playing this album more or less nonstop throughout the entire year 1969 enabled me to preserve my sanity.

Soooo, are the grooves worn aht yet?

Big smiles here as I traveled back to visit some fond memories.  Gracias, Bill.

"Love" this song!!  I saw the band (what's left of it, including Johnny Echols and Baby Lemonade, who were Arthur Lee's band until his death) at The Trip in Santa Monica a few weeks ago. Still amazing!!
I've had the album since it came out (it was a radio station advance copy and I was station music director.  It shortly became popular with airplay) and I still treasure it.
This album kept getting my attention on a lot of "greatest" lists, so I bought the CD a few years ago.  I appreciate 60's music, but I have to say, I just don't get it on this one—can't get into it.  Once and a while a portion will remind me of Moody Blues or Hair soundtrack, etc...but I just want to hear those instead.  Thumbs down for me.
It sounds exactly like the Calexico cover or I should say Calexico sounds exactly like Love.  I've been around a while and I have never heard of Love so thanks Bill. I get a number of undeserved compliments for my musical taste and knowledge and sometimes I even give you the proper credit:)
Wow!  I do love Calexico's version of this one.
Should try the version by U.F.O. and let it roll right into Electric Phase....pretty sweet.
what a tune. what a band... DA CAPO! {#Bananajam}

"Bottle Rocket" was right in Owen Wilson's wheelhouse—doggedly sunny belief in a goofy, insane and unworkable premise. Not the strongest story although you could say that about a lot of Wes Anderson's movies. "Grand Budapest Hotel" was great fun but it pretty much amounted to a few chase scenes and a lot of to-ing and fro-ing. Had no idea that Ralph Fiennes could be so funny especially as I'd last seen him impersonating an autistic Weimaraner in "The Duchess."
Still the most brilliant undiscovered album ever.
gotta love that 60s font and illustration style on the cover lol!
have heard this song a million times but never knew the name of the group

Truly magical song - and album. Been in my top 10 since a friend introduced it to me in the 60s!
We managed to see Arthur Lee for his (final) Forever Changes tour in UK, not long before he died. An unbelievable experience, sounded almost note perfect after his many years and hardships, and with a completely new group half his age!
Thanks for the memories ......

Not to me it isn't.  The Damned's version is pretty awesome and was my first exposure to the song.

Ooh, I'll have to find that…
How have I not heard this before? Even though I was only 5 in 1967, my old man had a great music collection and I listened to it all. This sounds like other music from the era that he was into. Good stuff.

1968 was such an odd year. With everything else going on, this song was a quiet corner of the world.
Thanks for playing it Bill.

Excellent song from an excellent album.  They really put out some great music that had a lot of influences from Jazz and classical and Latin.  They really brought all that together and that takes a lot of talent.
I love Love.
This song makes me tingle. I am 16 again when I hear it.
I have a funny response to this song. I understand intellectually that it's good, but it doesn't make my heart sing in ways that many songs that aren't as good do.

Never heared this before. What genre is this?
I know this might not go down well with the purists, but I like the remake of this song by The Damned better than the original.  Still, the original gets a 9 because, well, it's the original, isn't it?

I even broke down and bought it not long ago. Great stuff!
There is also a 2 CD set where the 2nd CD has studio out-takes. I like some of them better than the ones used.

The rare combination of lyric, music, arrangement all working together to make a really nice song.

As much as I generally disagree with Dave, I have to agree that this song simply soars—and, yes, is nearly perfect in its execution. Back then of course we had no idea what to think of it—a chorus of horns? A lone mariachi trumpet? Then Quickilver did "Pride of Man," and within a year Tower of Power, The Electric Flag, and Chicago burst upon the scene...and it all fell into place. Arthur Lee was beyond cool.
