This empty room it fills my mind
Freedom it leaves me confined
Every single bone has cracked
But in this life, you can't turn back
I don't want to live
I don't want to live here alone, alone, alone, alone
As these words part with my tongue
I question why they're even sung
I promise but I lied
I don't even know myself inside
I don't want to be
I don't want to be here alone, alone, alone, alone
Today and tomorrow have become one
Every single thing has become none
Human nature is a beast
What I've done the most, to show i have the least
Please don't leave me here
Please don't leave me here
Don't you leave me alone, alone, alone, alone
Freedom it leaves me confined
Every single bone has cracked
But in this life, you can't turn back
I don't want to live
I don't want to live here alone, alone, alone, alone
As these words part with my tongue

He tends to over-emote in his voice. Nice melodies, but sort of spoilt.

Ben Harper is from Mars.
BH is wonderful live - highly recommended. He can really JAM when he is into it, as heard here. Quite the muscian!
The band gives it a 7. The vocalist gets a 5.
Awesome tune I dig it.

Please excuse my ignorance, this live version rocks and I never listened to it before. Thanks to RP and to the listener who uploaded it.

Let's just jam............oh, you recorded it?
I've only ever heard this live version, and for me his slightly restrained delivery works just about right with the feel of the lyrics. I don't have any difficulty hearing what he's singing either...
First time I've heard this. When is this guy going to stop trying to sing??
Please.
He wrecks everything with his 'singing'.
Why hasn't the band left him yet and gone solo?

Instrumentally, this rocks. Unfortunately, Mumbly Ben fails to deliver with the vocals, as usual..

6/8 time vs. 4/4 time. Can you count 1-2-3 1-2-3 along with the music and feel in sync with the music? Then it's in 3/4 or 6/8 or 12/8. If you can't, and can count 1-2-3-4 again and again and it feels like the music is with you, then it's some version of 4/4. Although it seems silly, you COULD waltz to this song. That means the beat is based on 3. I hope this helps!
Ahh, thank you! Simple and clear.

Funny how I've never had a problem hearing Ben's lyrics since 1998 and I can't play the guitar either :)

Me too. I'm totally into this one.
And I admit I'm sorta relieved to find a BH song I like, b/c I don't like being a hater. And up 'til now, I absolutely was where BH was concerned. It was all just Ugh and Meh and Not My Cup of Tea from me over here. So hooray.
I had no idea he could sound like this, most of his music leaves me flat, but this rocks!

I just don't know what to make of this guy. His work can be very inconsistent and sometimes downright crappy, but he's also quite the stylistic chameleon, and extremely prolific. I could never do what he does, but I find a lot of his work pedantic. I want to be blown away, but I'm just not. One the other hand, the instrumental part of this song really jams. I'm so conflicted.

Could someone please explain this to the non-musician in me?

RP, so much better than TV...
Ben is sooo influenced by Jimmy Page...so awesome...
Great emotional song from an outstanding artist. Thanks, Ben, you rock.
Definately one of my favorite Ben Harper songs. Some of the others just don't appeal to me. I also like The Woman In You.

I kept trying to come up with a way to explain this in "non musician" terms (used to play several instruments, no longer, paint brush in tow now) If you don't know how to read music, its a hard concept to grasp in verbally telling someone, at least for me: so... check out this site:

chord prog reminds me of this Chris Isaak song

When he wants to he can rock it hard as anyone. Check out Ground On Down and Woman In You from the same album (Live From Mars)
Not bad, considering the source.
I had no idea that Ben Harper rocked this hard --- very good tune.
hearing this song on RP several years ago is what turned me on to Ben Harper. Still one of my favs by him. kickass groooooove

I like...but is it me, or are there tones of Dave Matthews in this song?
Lyrics remind me of various DMB songs...the "alone" theme, and instrumentals, a bit like "Satellite".
Who was first?
Yeah, you're right. His voice did sound a bit like Dave's. Satellite is also written in the same time signature as Alone. Alone was released in '99 so Satellite came long before it.

Uh, thank you, Niles Crane.

Didn't know Ben Harper could play this hard --- great cut!
this is just too cool! A 10!
ben. what a talented musician. there's not much i've heard that i haven't loved.
I like it. I like Marillon better of course, but since they don't seem to be putting out music, I'll take this.

Yeah!
wow - another great tune heard only on RP. Thanks!!
Love this song. Such a great feel. Just discovered Ben Harper and have liked most of what I\'ve heard.
