Some 'interesting' memories from around 1985 raise their pointed little heads whenever I hear this. To be honest, I'm amazed I could even remember my own name back then, let alone what was going on.
A brain-curdling pleasure to hear 'Echoes', in full. any time, and especially via the auspices of Bill and his merry band.

I remember listening to this on cassette in the Seventies driving along a valley in Snowdonia in Wales. Not a care in the world, totally engrossed in the world of Pink Floyd. All of a sudden a very low flying jet plane from RAF Valley in Anglesey flew overhead from behind the car. I did not see or hear its approach. Was a good job I had brown [vinyl] upholstery in the car!🐨
Oh they are good at that. I first heard this extraordinary and ground-breaking track on Radio Luxembourg, listening on a radio under the bedclothes at boarding school in 1971. Wonderful then, wonderful now. What a band - a chiselled-in-stone 10.

Case Western Reserve University, 1971, or 1970, Pink Floyd played this astonishing piece . A gymnasium. Still one of the most transfixing shows I have experienced. Completely straight but I was later informed that 3/4 of the mostly Case students were tripping. There was a sense of electricity in the space. This piece always carries me back

Hands down favorite Pink Floyd track... ever. Love that you play the entire track that I've been listening to since I first discovered music in the 80s.
I am very glad that the echo is reflected in my heart, reminding me of the best moments in my life

I've been waiting for this track to show up ... So that I can tell a funny (true) story related to it. 
In the mid 1970's I was a chef on a Royal Navy Polaris Submarine. I used to enjoy my turn on night watch, baking the bread and preparing 'stuff' for the following day. I had a little tape deck wired up to a speaker and alone in the galley, I played my favourite music to my heart's content.
I was playing Meddle. It was almost finished when the on-watch leading hand of the sound room crew burst in on me shouting that I was in deep shit. The captain was up, the control room was closed up and serious alarm and worry was going off.
We would dive for two months at a time ... surfacing for nothing. On patrol, one of our primary aims was to remain undetected. The galley on those boats was located directly below the sound room. The sound room had picked up the pinging emanating from Pink Floyd's Echoes and had mistaken it for the real thing.
Oops!
Everyone saw the funny side of it eventually but it cost me a few beers.

Pink Floyd, like Radiohead, is a band I appreciate more than enjoy listening to.
I used to listen to this when I was 11 while going to sleep and it scared the bejesus out of me!
Bill there's no sound in space (a vacuum.) You need a medium for it to travel through, like air or water.
BillG - In your intro to this song you mentioned if anyone ever wondered what a sonar ping would sound like in space, this song has a good example. However, I am a bit confused because the song was Echoes by Pink Floyd, not The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel.

Could not insult this track with anything other with a 10. Rock solid 10 bouncing off the limiter 10. Turn out the lights, turn up the amp and drift for 23 minutes of pure heaven and forget your problems.

I had heard this on vinyl and tape, but after seeing this in the movie, "Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii," I WAS BLOWN AWAY... Wright, singing his soul out, and jamming on the keyboards, and Gilmour, singing, standing in the sand and ash, and playing his absolute heart out... Waters, slamming the bass with passion, and Mason, just whacking the hell out of the drums... It's a Rock Art Masterpiece, on every level! And -- doing a show for the fossilized! -- how JAM!

Bill, you can't hear sound in space. It's devoid of matter (atmosphere) and therefore there's nothing to carry the vibrations. But I suspect you already knew that. It is a trippy song.
Vanguards of a new sound. And in a way, this entire track is an early sketch for the later album, Dark Side of the Moon.
Echoes is an amazing song and one of the many tunes Pink Floyd has done that makes me describe their style as impressionistic rock. I was fortunate to see the Floyd during the Dark Side of the Moon tour. After they played the entire album straight through, they played Echoes. Between the music and the lighting effects, it felt like I was actually descending down into the ocean.
Geez...these guys were awesome when they worked together.

Meddle is one of my PF favs. Such good stuff! Love that RP's got this on rotation now. It is a good fit.
An absolute must play once every camping trip for my wife and I while sitting at the picnic table playing cards or backgammon. Love this album and all the memories it brings.

Echoes is so good that Andrew Lloyd Webber had to nick a bit of it for The Phantom of the Opera!

I like it 'cause it's pre-"The Wall" Pink Floyd. Was and still am great fan of their early uniquely innovative style; not anymore after that, because everything they ever did sounded musically the same to my ears.
Plus, their lyrics eternally went along the same depressing theme "life sucks and then you die" which, beside becoming boring to hear over and over again, did not appeal to me at all after my "teenager rebellion" phase

Back in nineteen-dickety-do, I used to play this album EVERY night when going to bed. I was in college, and Pink Floyd steered me through those years in compelling ways. I was almost upset that they because so famous, as they were an obscure psychedelic band that were very personal to me. Oh well. Their later work made their fame worthwhile.
Now I can get on with what I was doing, I had to stop for this.
It is 32 degrees here on a bank holiday Monday, I hope that my neighbours have the same memories of this track.

Also used to listen to this on my way to work at 3am in the early seventies- not on8 track, but cassette. It was still great. With apologies to any households near to traffic lights where I had to wait for a green light.

How funny, this song comes up as THE #12 SONG in the RP Classics list, and ITS NEVER BEEN PLAYED?
There seems to be some sort of disconnect here. Personally,I don't think it should be #12, all of Pink Floyd's music comes up with way too high of a rating in the Classics list IMHO.

You would think that one day this song will be played here on RP. Even if it's 3am on a Saturday or Sunday morning. It would surely indelibly etch that moment in time on someone's memory bank.
DSOTM got me interested in Pink Floyd, but Echoes totally blew me away. The Live at Pompeii version I think is still the best; Meddle version is a bit polished.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time. Echoes is by far the best piece of music they ever recorded. I wish there was an 11 to distinguish it from my other very favorite cuts. The atmospherics & intangible or unconcious elements of this song are part of a mental journey that the listener takes with the composers. This is a tour de force of songwriting genius.
This is Floyd at their best. If it's too long to play the entire piece -- and it's such a shame to cut it down -- then play part one of the "Live at Pompeii" version.
either play the 24 minute original meddle version or dont play it at all. lets not insult echoes.
...the fact that this is already in the libary makes it all the more a travesty that the butchered version gets prominent rotation instead...
This one has been my favourite through 15 years, I will never stop loving it. I feel pity for all who havent heard it yet.
