All your guesses are wrong!! As a student of eastern philosophy I can tell you the lyrics to this song are an almost complete transliteration from the Tao Te Ching, the formost book of Taoist philosophy originally from China.
That the song is kinda weak isn't the fault of Taoism. Donovan really fell off the boat this time.
