WTF can't you even spell "WINNER"?

Ol Gatorade posted this 14 years ago, so I'm assuming he's about 28-30 now. I wonder if he's learned to appreciate this song yet.

Cheers would have been a very different show if this had been the theme song.

Lyrics:

Well a person can work up a mean mean thirst
After a hard day of nothin' much at all
Summer's passed, it's too late to cut the grass
There ain't much to rake anyway in the fall

And sometimes I just ain't in the mood
To take my place in back with the loudmouths
You're like a picture on the fridge that's never stocked with food
I used to live at home, now I stay at the house

And everybody wants to be special here
They call your name out loud and clear
Here comes a regular
Call out your name
Here comes a regular
Am I the only one here today?

Well a drinkin' buddy that's bound to another town
Once the police made you go away
And even if you're in the arms of someone's baby now
I'll take a great big whiskey to ya anyway

Everybody wants to be someone's here
Someone's gonna show up, never fear
'Cause here comes a regular
Call out your name
Here comes a regular
Am I the only one who feels ashamed?

Kneeling alongside old Sad Eyes
He says opportunity knocks once then the door slams shut
All I know is I'm sick of everything that my money can buy
The fool who wastes his life, God rest his guts

First the lights, then the collar goes up, and the wind begins to blow
Turn your back on a pay-you-back, last call
First the glass, then the leaves that pass, then comes the snow
Ain't much to rake anyway in the fall

thanks for this!

love the 'mats. love this song.

The Replacements are a GREAT band, you have to check them out!  I know what your saying though, this song isn't meant to be "good", more invoke the feeling of despair.  It's dark, emotional, and brilliant.  This isn't typical of their music, most of it is pretty upbeat with flairs of rock, blues, punk, etc.  Just check them out and next time you hear this song, you'll probably appreciate it a bit more.  Westerberg is pretty amazing in my book.

Maybe Gatorade should just stick  with Harry Styles or BTS.

Perhaps Adam "lifted" the chord progression.  But I don't think you can copyright a chord progression.

yep, this predates the Hannukah song by a number of years.
This one song blows away anything done by the Foo Fighters (if you want to talk about monotony and grating) and it's not even one the 'mats' best.

I understand that...just noting the similarities.

I clicked that link but it's long gone so I had to go to the Google. I assume this is the story:

Dec. 20, 2006
Sorry to have to report some bad news today. Jim Walsh posts in his blog that Paul had a nasty injury to his left hand, cutting some nerves and damaging cartilage, and is currently in a cast. The details:

"A week or so ago he put a screwdriver through his left hand trying to get some wax out of a candle and cut some nerves and ripped some cartilage and hurt himself pretty bad. He's in a cast. He's seen a couple doctors who say he won't be able to play guitar for a year." So please send out some good thoughts or say a prayer to the divinity of your choice for a speedy recovery.

Ain't that the truth.

This song is the perfect closer to the Tim album.  Maybe if I was coming to this song for the first time I wouldn't be giving it a 9?  Nah.

Nope, I've heard this one enough that I have decided it was a total waste of electron to have played it in order to record it and it definitely is a waste to replay it.

It has to be one of the most grating tunes ever recorded.

I can't stand it enough to see if the lyrics are poignant touching or just plain crap.

I have the Replacements disk called "Pleased to meet me" and like the tune called ‘The Ledge' real well and can tolerate the rest of the disk well enough that I usually play the whole thing if I'm on a long enough run in the car, but,...

Love the 'Mats! Westerberg's "Stereo" is a great solo effort I'd highly recommend.
Jesus. This is rough. A lot different from their stuff on "Sorry, Ma Forgot to Take Out the Trash" - one of the great punk rock albums of the 80s - tons of loud, fast, two-minute ditties. I give it 10.

I find myself liking them much more now. Live and learn.
God damn the Replacements were sooooo good. How about \"Skyway\" from Pleased to meet Me??
I was listening to a Replacements CD in my car yesterday and played this song a couple times. I just love it — for so many reasons.
Trapped!!!
Saturated with emotion. I can hear the pain.
This brings back some great memories.... I'd love to hear "Alex Chilton" one of these days. Thanks, Bill!

I remember taking a chance on "Hootenany" back in the mid-80s and being totally mystified. Find myself likin' em a little bit more now, and a new "respect" for being ahead of their time, too.

I would submit Tom Waits but would not press the argument...leaving work now to have a drink. Feels like gin tonight.
The Replacements are a group for the ages. There will always be folks running into their stuff wondering why they havent heard of them before. Funny how that happens with a group - undeniably better than 95% of what's around them and unknown. Maybe it's no stranger than the Ashlee Simpsons and Nick(whoever)s that are worse than nearly everything else out there and yet walk around with the eyes of the world registering their every move.

Cheers mate! ...couldn't agree more!
Upped it from a 1 to a 2. It's not really bad enough to be described as "sucko" but it's really not very good.

haven't heard this in years...a welcome song to my ears!
great song, if a bit boozy and maudlin.

Believe it or not, this song got a fair amount of radio play on Fargo, ND's crap-tastic rock station at the time (usually right between Van Halen and Journey). You'd think they could have pulled one of the rockers from the album...BUT NOOOOOOO!!!! "Here Comes a Regular" was considered safe enough for this alternative band (but this was way before the term 'alternative' even existed in music). Anyway, the 'Mats never got going commercially this or any other time, and it's a damn shame.
That Fargo radio station also played "The Ledge" from Pleased to Meet Me when MTV wouldn't. It was usually played between The Cult and REO Speedwagon.

Yeah . . . yet so much better.
This reminds me of a seminal band from England, the Regulars, who did a song called "Here Comes A Replacement."

So the Mats mighta borrowed some influence from a few others, but trust me, FAR MORE have riffed them than the other way around. Nirvana, Soul Asylum, Bright Eyes, the list is too long to list here.
"I used to live at home, now I stay at the house" Freakin' brilliant.
Great, great, great tune. My brother got me into this, and this got me through my drinking days. Great tune.
Good tune.. Like it reminds me of a RunRig tune
IT WAS 20 YEARS AGO TODAY...OR AT LEAST CLOSE TO IT: The Replacements released their major label debut "Tim"---to massive indifference. Well, at least a bunch of rock critics bought the record. Believe it or not, this song got a fair amount of radio play on Fargo, ND's crap-tastic rock station at the time (usually right between Van Halen and Journey). You'd think they could have pulled one of the rockers from the album...BUT NOOOOOOO!!!! Hee hee... Replacements are my husband's favorite band... he pointed that out to me a few years ago. It's taken me several years to really appreciate them. They didn't strike me as much at first, but the older I get, the more I appreciate the raw, honest, unassuming style and sound. BLESS YOU for playing this one. :)

Funny, these guys always had a rep of being really good among some of my peers. I'm no connaisseur of their music, but what I've heard has always struck me as decent, but not spectacular. Guess I better go back to school.
knock knock knockin on heavens doooooor
Excellent. Thank you.
Just one of the great songs from one of my top ten albums of all time . . . also one of the best AND worst live bands of all time . . . some of my greatest concert memories are the Replacements shows I was privileged to see . . .
I was in university when the Replacements and Husker Du were at their height. Drunkeness and feedback, the soundtrack to my life.

Never heard this tune before. Its a good one! Dan
Saw their last concert ever, in Chicago's Grant Park. AT end, they handed their instruments to the roadies, who finished the show. Always liked these guys; too bad they kind of self-destructed. And this song is a good one. Wry wit.
