I remember loving this when I first heard it in the movie Valley Girls at a rep theatre in the early/mid-80s. I expected to kinda dislike the movie but ended up thinking it was fun. It took a while to find the album on vinyl. For 40 years, this song has been a (mildly) guilty pleasure.

I had never heard this in the 80s.  But I met my future husband, a former radio DJ and programmer, around 2000. (He's a wee older than me ;)  And he played this for me,  trying to connect with, as he called it "an 80s child" LOL. 
So now I love this song, never having heard it in the 80s, and remember all that was exciting about a new relationship back in 2001, with this person who is now my hubby.

That is probably related to the free show they did in Baltimore's Inner Harbor back in... maybe... 2001. They had a great turnout, there were dozens of us there, but we were outnumbered by the people who strolled by to ask "uh... who's that?" It was a very sad day. yes, but saying ALL 80s music is the same is just as much a generalization. It's like calling the 70s the disco era and forgetting about punk rock. Modern English is not the same as U2. Kajagoogoo is not the same as Crowded House. Gary Numan is not the Cure. Every generation, every decade has produced something, many things, worthwhile and timeless. You have to have the 80s to have the 90s to have the 00s to have anything at all. Don't understand why people don't get this... :~ Having said that, I grew up in the 80s and even back then never cared for this song. I think I was traumatized by the video.
