A day once dawned and it was beautiful
A day once dawned from the ground
Then the night she fell and the air was beautiful
The night she fell all around

So look, see the days
The endless coloured ways
And go play the game that you learned
From the morning

And now we rise and we are everywhere
And now we rise from the ground
And see she flies, and she is everywhere
See she flies all around

So look, see the sights
The endless summer nights
And go play the game that you learned
From the morning

I prefer Pink Moon.

Please play Pink Moon, soon!?!

(While reaching for the p, to spell pink, I hit the o. Guess what that spells? If you only knew how long I've been typing my way through this life, and it's the first time that that ever happened.)
Love this song.
Let's Eat Grandma released a cover of this - as a single I think - in 2023. It's excellent too.
Was +- 17 years old when I purchased a double vinyl Island album, ""Bumpers"". Many good musicians, Sandy Denny, Jethro Tull, etc. There was ""Late November"" by Nick Drake too. That ""doomed "" song always stuck with me.  In the many years since his pretty heavy poetry  had 1-3 revivals and was commercially all of a sudden somehow popular, this is serious music! What a waste of talent, these (often depressing) totally beautiful songs. Nick was not a happy young man, but his work is unique. If anything comes close to it, Sandy Denny, early Van Morrison, ""bards.""  Now 50 years later I still often listen to all his 3-4 albums, not happy stuff but so romantic.  Rest in Peace Nick and thank you for your soul. PK, Holland

Pretty sure it's Nick Drake influencing Glen Hansard.
He was ahead of his time, and this is beautiful.
I've had this at a 9 for a long time. After reading the lyrics, I finally bumped it to a 10.
I can hear the influence on Glen Hansard in this one.  I could listen to Nick Drake all day and never get tired of him.
Another darling of RP, I know, but his guitar work was just too busy for his sleepy vocal delivery. Hope to hear something I like  or think better of it someday :)
I don't think I had ever heard of Nick Drake before hearing him on RP. The more I have listened to his songs, the more I like them. In fact over time, RP has transformed what I listen to. Repeatedly I have said to myself, "why was I not listening to this 10, 20, 30 or 40 years ago! Over time, RP has profoundly expanded my appreciation for music. Nick Drake is just one of many examples of this. Thank you Radio Paradise.

That may be the reason I always skip his songs as fast as I can. Not that I think they're bad, just something inside of me feels unexplainably alarmed in a really unsettling way. Anyway, thanks for providing a possible explanation to this!

I also read somewhere that he never showed anyone how he tuned his guitar and no one has been able to duplicate. I'm not a musician so this may be off.
I came to Nick Drake via the infamous VW ad. I lived in Northern CA at the time and the ad and song absolutely captured a night drive there. Just uncanny (or regional intention) . I wish I had been exposed to him in the 70s. The production and musionship so different than anyone else, even Fairport, Sandy, etc.

There were several other folk musicians in the early '70s who attained similar sounds to this; especially artists who worked with this producer and engineer, such as John Martyn and Fairport Convention.  It also has a lot to do with how Drake plucked and strummed the strings.  Recording techniques today are quite different, even for acoustic guitar stuff, so I don't know if someone like LaMontagne could truly replicate the sound, even if he wanted to..

I may have posted this before but back in 2000 when Pink Moon was featured in the VW TV commercial it reminded me that Nick Drake was often played on WNEW FM back in the 70's. Fond memories. I then bought the box set, loaded the five discs in my CD changer and played those discs exclusively through the winter from November 'til March.Nick Drake provided the background music to my gazing out the window to the gray skies and leafless trees in my window view. Couldn't get my spirits any lower but beautiful just the same. Other than listening to Nick Drake I streamed RadioParadise which always picked me up. Thank you Bill!

Place Nick's CD into your multi-disc player if you have one then place other CD's of choice into that same player then hit the random button. This always works for me when I suffer from what you discribe..

wow. i was hearing the song before this one (Lightning Seeds - Waiting For Today To Happen), and it was so bad i decided to tune out. instead, i put on a playlist of my own. on random. and this song starts playing (from MY computer). and then i see it starts playing here too (from looking at the "now playing" list. and i tune in again! edit: though the following song (Baka Beyond - Spirit of the Forest) was bad enough for me to tune out again. Wow, isn't it really really cool when someone states an opinion (not a refutable fact, but an irrefutable opinion), and other people like to jump on in and attack it? Like, for example, stating that those rating this song low are 'loons'. I mean, I like the color green, and I hope anyone liking yellow suffers from a debilitating brain anurism. But finally moving to the realm of the serious... I wish more people would simply share their opinions about the song/artist/album, good or bad, without attacking each other. I had never even heard of Nick Drake before Radio Paradise. Yeah, I was too caught up in the Dead at that time I guess. Anyway I have yet to hear a song that I don't like. This man's music is wonderful. What a tragic loss, but then again how many times over the millenium have we lost geniuses to their own personal demons.

You know, I never picked up that irony. I didn't discover Nick's work until the early 90s, so never really appreciated the context and sequence of the corpus of his work. It has often struck me that this is one of very few musical moments where Nick is squarely on the upbeat side of the emotional palette. Now it strikes me even more so. Thanks, llazare.

I loved that for this, the last tune on his last album, he chose to close with such a positive view. I'm sorry I'd ever heard those last 4 songs (Rider on the Wheel, Black Eyed Dog, Hanging on a Star and Voice from the Mountain) that he recorded after Pink Moon - they were just too painful. I wish this tune was the last song he left us with.
