Just when you think it's over... he goes off again. The reverb makes it even worse.

Yeah, the legend says they spent some time up Nick's bottom in the early nineties.
New Gold Dream now!

Is he singing to us from the bottom of a well? And if so, is Zamfir and his panflute down there with him?
I knew that the English were capable of great crimes against Ireland, but placing people at the bottom of wells? What next?

So you are the Masochist, and RP is the Sadist?

We wanna be the Alarm!
Simple Minds used to be nicknamed U3 ... very apt, especially regarding their later stuff

I can relate to people calling this "drivel rock".... and YES there is something horribly wrong with the acoustics, it shouldn't sound like this... sounds like SOMEONE sent it through a reverb...
BUT:
- Having seen them live in the Eighties...
- Having been to Belfast a few times...
- Knowing the traditional Celtic song this is based upon...
- Knowing their Scottish origin...
- Having loved Kerr and the Minds for ages...
...I can relate to it totally. This song would always get a 10 from me. Sorry folks!! :D
PS - PLEASE though - look for the original recording, this sound is just annoying and ruins it.
Oh, you're the person who thinks Richard Thompson plays Irish music ... it shouldn't surprise me that you like derivative cr*p like this ... awful cash-in on tragedy. Shame, cause Simple Minds were good once ...
Nothing personal, mate ... just do your homework

My gosh! This is just beautiful...
Something about those pipes that remind me of home :sunny.gif:
Please turn off this condescending, derivative cr*p
Ah, that's better - I just have ....

The one I've got of this (on vynil) didn't have the cave-man vocals, I wonder where they came from?
my favorite SM tune

Think this song may have come out a bit before ROTK. Great one!

At the risk of being an anorak, I think Simple Minds stated at the time of release that it was a re-working of She Walks Through the Fair a traditional Irish folk song that was popularised by Fairport Convention in the late sixties.
mmmMMMmmm...cheesy!
the phrasing (not the words ) of the melody reminds me a bit of The Doors - The End
( Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land )

Is is just me, or is this a rip off of "One Tree Hill" by U2 ?
Wow, I thought that was amazing. I am very very impressed.

Not enough Simple Minds Played. Give us New Gold Dream!
That is one of my favorite albums of all time. Brilliant. I always listen to it in its entirety.
I think Jim Kerr said about Street Fighting Years that they tried too hard to fill every moment; you can hear that on this song, big time. Nevertheless, some great songs. Saturday Girl was a sad little B-side from one of the singles.
