Hey love
Is that the name you're meant to have
For me to call
Look love
They've given up believing
They've turned aside our stories of the gentle fall
But don't you believe them
Don't you drink their poison too
These are the scars that words have carved
On me
Hey love
That's the name we've long held back
From the core of truth
So don't turn away now
I am turning in revolution
These are the scars that silence carved
On me
This is the same place
No not the same place
This is the same place, love
No not the same place we've been before
Hey love
I am a constant satellite
Of your blazing sun
My love
I obey your law of gravity
This is the fate you've carved on me
This law of gravity
This is the fate you've carved on me
On me
Is that the name you're meant to have
For me to call
Look love
They've given up believing

From reading "Winner Take All Politics", I learned that it actually started even earlier. In the mid-70's, after that crazy liberal, Nixon, created Medicare and the EPA, corporations got very unhappy and really started organizing. They created trade organizations that began pumping large amounts of money into politics at all levels, and buying up media so that they could pour poison into the ears of the masses (gods, guns, gays, muslims, etc.) and prevent any news about what was really happening to the government from reaching people. Media are now owned 90% or more by 6 large corporations. At the same time, the traditional sources of progressive organizing and power — small churches and unions — began to decline, the latter because of specific policies from the right. Throw into the mix the decline of funding for public schools ("why would I give my money to educate THOSE people?"), and you have a perfect atmosphere for demagoguery.
Hence the rise in the 80's of Reagan, and of blue-dog democrats, who were chasing corporate money and ignoring their constituents.
But what about Vienna Teng?

Not that hard to track. It basically started with Newt Gingrich in the 1980s when they started going after the democratic base of blue collar workers and farm workers by using emotional trigger issues (guns, god, and gays) and started out right lying about what Democrats were trying to do (e.g., turn their children gay, etc) and got them focused on these issues instead of economic policies of the GOP that do nothing to help them. The approach was latter given a turbo boost by Karl Rove. Here we are 30 years later and you can't have a discussion on anything without extreme polarization.

A social archaeologist could probably track the polarization of America by sifting through a majority of RP posts.

I get the point of this. I generally like a lot more of the music though, or I wouldn't be here. One in twenty is not good enough for me.
The way I look at it, I really like about a third of the songs I hear here. Love a small percentage, hate a small percentage, and split the rest somewhere in between.

Really? Y'know, maybe the image simply looks uncannily like Bruce Lee, and he DID make his living in extraordinarily dramatic representations of Chinese martial arts. This could just be a cute quip, and not particularly insensitive at that.

A little nasal for my tastes, but otherwise a fine voice. Yet vaguely unsatisfying, like lukewarm bath water.

Broadway?!? You can't be serious. She is one of the most thoughtful songwriters around. Her voice can lack depth but doesn't detract from the depth of her music.

I just flat-out don't like her. I don't think she's innovative, her lyrics are largely liberal-pop platitudes, and she's a person who has never had to sweat or struggle for ANYTHING, including some level of musical acclaim. I think she's a pseudo-boho who's had everything in life handed to her on a silver platter.
So there now.
Amazing.
Sometimes you don't to say much more than that.

This is very pretty. So sweet. The 'yearning' is killing me. You know, I think that today's songwriters need to learn their craft and quit relying on cheap emotionalism to sell their tunes.
I don't like Tori Amos, nor Kate Bush much, and yet I like Vienna Teng a lot. Go figure. She's got a beautiful voice, and I find her music to be melodic and rewarding. Many say the same about the others, but I don't hear it there . . . though I do here. It's a mystery.
Chris Isaac, Vienna Teng, Kate Bush
Bill, you're playing songs just for me.....Thanks!
This sounds like Delta Goodrem, ie booooooring...so different from Evanescence. I can't see how you can even say that.
.....Sorry I just drifted off there. Like taking a Mogadon.
At first, I though this was Dar Williams, with some over-the-top (for her) production.

She seems to be very heavily influenced by Tori Amos but I think there is some skill and craftsmanship to the music and her voice is wonderful. A lot of people don't have hard lives filled with constant strife...hardly a valid reason to hate someone and their music.
I first heard VT on RP and bought both her CDs. I've also seen her perform live twice. She's so talented, such a wonderful songwriter and musician. Thanks for introducing us!

I remember her visiting the RP studio about a year ago or so.
I dig.
Chris Issak, then Vienna Teng. Great set Bill!
Vienna Teng is one of my favorite discoveries here at RP.
Vienna Teng is the only thing that makes me turn off RP. She is a competent musician, but too maudlin for me.
Pretty decent this. Obviously influenced by Sarah McLachlan(of which I used to be a huge fan). This is much better than Sarah's recent output, though. A seven it is then.
Hmm...
Not my cup of tea. She sure is trying hard to sing! The piano is just okay.
This piano sounds very good on mp3... Quite remarkable.
Nice song too.
I didn't think I'd ever hear a voice with the authority and clarity of Alison Krauss until this one. Passion, too--something Alison sadly lacks.
Still lovin' Vienna...
Vienna rocks! :sunny.gif:
Very good song, too!
Wow, first time I RECOGNIZED VT...

What a wonderful voice.
Chris Isaak, Vienna Teng... nice San Francisco pairing. Will Bill play American Music Club next for the trifecta?

From her first album. She keeps getting better.
My wife and I just saw Vienna play at Club Passim in Cambridge last night. Phenomenal show, with Vienna/piano + cello player + violin player. Gorgeous, intimate setting, and rich arrangements with the strings. Vienna's stage manner is personable and direct, and she told the story of the creation of every song. Couldn't ask for a better evening.
I'm just getting into Vienna over here, and it's all the fault of RP!
Most excellent, I must say.
Beautiful voice and piano. Very nice arrangement.
Love the piano. Very pleasant voice. First time I've heard 'em.
Really nice. Lets hear more from this artist.
Liked it so much I had to buy it, can't give it a better recommendation that that! :)
