Well it's 3 am I'm out here riding again
Through the wicked, winding streets of my world
I make a wrong turn, break it
Now i'm too far gone
I've got a siren on my tail
And that ain't the fine I'm lookin for

I see a stairway so I follow it down
Into the belly of a whale where my secrets echo all around
You know me now, but to do better than that
You got to follow me
Boy I'm trying to show you where I'm at

Hey pretty, don't you wanna take a ride with me
Through my world
Hey pretty, don't you wanna kick and slide
Through my world

Well I got a mind full of wicked designs
I got a non-stop hole in my head-imagination
I'm in a building that has 2000 floors
And when they all fall down
I think you know it's you they're fallin for

I can't forget I am my sole architect
I built the shadows here
I built the growlin voice I fear
You add it up, but to do better than that
You got to follow me
Boy I'm trying to show you where i'm at

Hey pretty, don't you wanna take a ride with me
Through my world
Hey pretty, don't you wanna kick and slide
Through my world

Hey pretty, my pretty baby
Rock it through my world
Hey pretty, my pretty baby
Rock it through my world

Hey now can't you feel me longing
(do you get the gist of this song now)
Hey now can't you feel me
Feel me

Hey pretty, hey pretty, hey pretty baby
Don't you wanna take a ride with me
Don't you wanna take a ride with me
My baby
Don't you wanna take a ride with me
My pretty baby
My baby
Don't you wanna
Rock it through my world
Don't you wanna take a ride with me
My baby
Don't you wanna
My baby
Don't you wanna take a ride with me

Same. This is on my list with Radiohead, Elbow, and a few more. Thanks, William!

Tura Satana was all natural, no surgical enhancements.  That photo is ca. 1965.
I get the gist of the song now...  What a great album

Same here!  Good Tune!!
What a shame that we live in an era where Drake gets fame and fortune, while talented singers like Poe find only low-key success.

Id ride them 1st then take the car.

Terrible story, full of twists and legal details.  Worthy of a Movie of the Week.

Absolutely!

Bumped thus up to a 9

Yeah, she’s basically a genius I think. Musically, lyrically. And not in some cold, technical way, no. Oh, almost forgot she produced it too.
Yes, “stunning, powerful, raw emotion” yet presented with enormous skill and tight creative control, a very rare combination.
This is so Garbage-like.

Poe, what a mystery artist, great album wish she had more

Poe and Aimee Mann.  Two peas in the same pod?  And a tasty, musically creative, pod it be, too.  {#Dance}

getting a lot of play for 16 yo cd
glad of it

Reminds me a bit on Garbage and Shirley, especially their first album.
Excellent, coming after Goldfrapp's Annabel! Both are fabulous, expressive artists with incredible minds, amazing lyrics, & sexy voices!
I've got a siren on my tail and that ain't the fun I'm lookin for

Love that line.  Reminds me of my impetuous youth, in the days before cruise control.
nice....i'll take a ride....

  I agree, Fred.
And doesn't it omit the "get the gist of the song" lyric as well? Which I think is a good thing.

Bump 8 -->9  Forgot how much I love this song!

Never heard of Poe. The wiki article on the nightmare of her recording contract explains why.
The album cover is fabulous. Song's pretty good too.
One of my favorite albums to listen to when I paint.
I thought it was Garbage too!!!

And, though Poe has been around for years, I am still undecided whether or not I like her.. It is sort of like she stole the sound of Shirely Manson, who I have been listening to, happily since the mid 90s.

Its just weird. Even the band has that Garbage-y sort of darker side of the night sound.
I also thought it was Garbage...does anyone know if there is a connection?

Never knew what a -huge- Poe fan I am until hearing on RP. Love this song/album.

Love Poe too. I believe she ran into problems with her label. This was a great album though.

Operative work "strikingly."  {#Wink}
I would suggest reading the Wiki page on Poe. Classic tale of an artist getting f*d by the system.

Somewhat repetitive sound...
Sure, tons of production, but what a entirely boring voice. . . .
Thought this was Manson and Garbage, had to look in.

Hmmmm...
Damn, I love her voice.
Had a crush on Annie in college but never had the nerve (she was the artsy girl that always seemed hard to approach for this country boy) ... then fell in love with her music nearly 10 years later when this album was released, which happened to coincide with the loss of my father.   Another 10+ years and the music is still moving, touching, and sexy all at the same time.   Thanks to RP for giving me something that I continue to enjoy and is still "haunting" (reminds me of the period after the tragic loss of my father).    Hope that she finds success fighting the recording industry.

The album as a whole is a solid 10, and very moving, written as it was after the death of her father. I'm not ashamed to admit that I was blubbing as the last track faded away. This woman knows how to write songs and express emotion. The remix of this song with her brother is even better, IMO.

His part in that song is a passage from his book "House of Leafs," the book and this album are companion pieces.

To each his own.  I would never have described this as early 70s or hanky-panky.  It's an 8 for me.  If you like this tune, give the entire CD a listen.  Many more really good tunes...

The sound of early 70's and hanky-panky....
OK, call me a perv, but "...take a slide through my world"; Yowee!! I love it!

I think I like the other version with the guys' narrative included.
And that "do you get the gist of the song now" thing just ruins it. Let the innuendo speak for itself.Otherwise it ain't innuendo. "Next time don't be so f***ing eager!"

She's waiting out a dispute with her old record label.   Seems they won't let her use the name so she's been recording with others (such as Conjure One).

Love the sultry, gravelly, dirty vocals.  *8*
Leaning toward ten.  Poe out the ride.  "Hey pretty, would you like to take a ride with me?"  Man or woman addressed, this is an inside outer and tuff.  Like Poe a lot

Poe IS pretty... saw her in concert and she is an amazing performer... her music rocks too!

I think I like the poetry version with her brother better.
Quite likeable.

11:56 Poe - Hey Pretty
11:53 Emiliana Torrini - Jungle Drum
11:49 Björk - Human Behavior
Smooth emotions...ok for the moment
Sounds like Garbage. I think is Garbage when this song starts playing. {#Mrgreen}
Fluid and multi-layered with great skill, and a sexy moody feel.
I like it a lot!
I like this song, but there is a noise in it that has a very cell phone ring quality to it and it is driving me nuts.
