Some gay guys really know how to rock n' roll. Hats off to Little Richard!
At least as of this 1982 appearance on David Letterman's show, Little Richard said he wasn't gay anymore (cuz he found the lord.)

my dad really liked this song. i think it was because of when it came out and because he could remember all the words. LOL
The older I get, the more I realize songs like this are so good.

When my kids were little they loved watching the movie 'The Brave Little Toaster'. This song was featured early on in the film, and it brings back great memories every time I hear it.
Just like the last song...it's a tango

ORIGINAL!
(And we all know Little Richard is a true original.)
(And we all know Little Richard is a true original.)
Back in the early 80's Little Richard arrived at a tv station where I was working on his latest religious conversion publicity tour. He played his pious sedate self for the first two-thirds of the talking head interview. But then he went up to the microphone and let loose with the most hair-raising, soulful, gospel spiritual I have ever heard. We stood watching in the control room transfixed. There was dead silence for about 5 seconds when he finished singing. There has never been a doubt in my mind since then that all "rock-n-roll" and it's subsequent derivatives come directly from black gospel and r&b music.
Bill just said this song is not about Ice Cream. what!? My whole life is a lie
Little Richard was such an astonishing, beautiful human being!
A brilliant musical innovator: if the creation of Rock 'n Roll can be credited to any one artist, it would have to be this man. Further, he played a key role in the evolution of R&B and Soul!
And if that isn't enough for one person to accomplish in his life, there is the huge contribution he made to positive social change: his were the first concerts to be racially integrated.
Wow.
RIP
And if not for RP, I wouldn't even hear his music anymore. TY RP!

1955, Jesus what this song did to people, although there was a great deal of censorship then.
In the 80's my dad took me to his church to listen to Little Richard talk about the evils of Rock N Roll. All I kept saying to myself was if my dad makes me stop listening to Rock, I'm running away. Luckily, that wasn't my dad's agenda...yea dad.

Quite a shock from Zep to this.

Lil' Richard is godlike, though he was influenced by seeing Esquerita prancing by and then seeing him performing a knock-out show (Esquerita wore 2 pompadors, one atop the other!)

Most of the "classic" music from the 50s and early 60s was silly. Ever listen to the lyrics of "Rock Around the Clock", "Eight Days a Week", or "Peggy Sue"? But in a time when TV sitcoms showed married couples sleeping in separate beds, and black America was expected to be quiet and subservient, Little Richard rode the ragged edge of sexual and racial acceptability.

After 500+ votes, this only rates a 6.8?!?! You gotta be kiddin' - one of the seminal tunes in rock history.

Due to the "eclectic" nature of Bill's menu, I think it comes as a little, welcome surprise to most of us.

Welllll... we certainly wouldn't have Prince if not for Little Richard. And as for raising eyebrows and moving feet, nobody has ever surpassed Little Richard. He was unabashedly sexually ambiguous a long time before Mick Jagger ever wore a dress and lipstick.
Besides, we need to remember where the music we love came from. If it weren't for this dude, The Beatles sure would have had a different sound.

i new this song for a long time from the brave little toaster movie daughter
No! Really?
Little Richard is from Macon (my city of residence) and recently returned for the first time in almost 50 years. Local lore says he was run out on a rail after he initially became popular due to some of his indescretions. I cannot believe it took 50 years for a city to formally embrace a music pioneer besides the street named after him years ago (which is about 200 yards long).

"with only fifteen minutes left in the session, "Tutti Fruiti, good booty" became "Tutti Fruiti, aw-rootie"."
The original version was too lewd for young impressionable minds...
I heard a RUMOR that 'rootie' is 'Rudy', for Rudy Martinez, aka Question Mark (and the Mysterians), of "96 Tears" fame, but the timing may be off.
Little Richard is still awesome.

Has anyone seen the totally lame Pat Boone performance of this?
I've heard an anecdote that Little Richard's rapid-fire "jumped back in the alley" from "Long Tall Sally" was a challenge of sorts to Boone, in response to the watered-down Tutti Frutti. He figured Boone wouldn't be able to wrap his tongue around that line, certainly not at the same speed.
Human beat-boxing has come a long way...

I totally agree.
If you define real rock music as containing a maniacal energy not found in other forms, then this rocks as hard as anything...
Sometimes I think this song is just as dangerous to some people as it was back then...
For my money, this song is still a threat to the powers that be...
This song makes me laugh (at him)
