I'm hangin' on they push and shove
Possession is the motivation
That is hangin' up the goddamn nation
Looks like we always end up in a rut
Everybody now
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
Slaughterhouse is killin' hogs
Twisted children killin' frogs
Poor dumb rednecks rollin' logs
Tired old ladies kissin' dogs
I hate the human love of that stinking mutt
I can't use it
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
President he's got his war
Folks don't know just what it's for
Nobody gives us rhyme or reason
Have one doubt they call it treason
We're chicken feathers
All without one nut goddamn it
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
Church on Sunday sleep and nod
Tryin' to duck the wrath of God
Preachers fillin' us with fright
They all tryin' to teach us what they think is right
They really got to be some kind of nut
I can't use it
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
Where's that bee and where's that honey
Where's my God and where's my money
Unreal values a crass distortion
Unwed mothers need abortion
Kind of brings to mind old young King Tut
He did it now
Tried to make it real compared to what
Tryin' to make it real compared to what
Just upped my rating to the same! Fortunate enough to see him live right here in his hometown some moons ago! Amazing!
GREAT TUNE! I started out with a TEN. Thanx RP!
9 -> 10

How is this NOT a 10?
Godlike dammit!
This song is a 9 for many reasons, one of which is the perfect use of “god dammit.”
How is this NOT a 10?
It's unfortunate how the lyrics are still relevant nearly fifty years later.
YES!
I Agree! ...Spot on!
Not many 8 minute songs that hold your attention the entire time--a solid 9!
Added one more to take it to the top.
This song is a 9 for many reasons, one of which is the perfect use of “god dammit.”
Which is why I am bumping my rating from 9 to a 10. God Dammit!
Well I'll be...
One of many albums purchased on Amazon after hearing it here at RP... I need to buy Amazon stock I guess!
If you did, I bet you're pretty pleased with yourself!
Sock it to me, now!
Something RP does so well: reminding us how much we loved something and reigniting the wish to not only go back to it but investigate it more😎
SLAP SOME OF THOSE C NOTES ON MY ORATORY CANAL.
Didn't you mean to shout, "AUDITORY" canal?
I saw what you did there... nice segue!!!

This is most definitely Jazz! Two great players and a great tune from a classic album.
Well,it does have saxophone.Kinda lacking in that cold, sterile corporate feel though.
I hafta say I prefer the company of loving, devoted "mutt" than a clueless, narcissistic, self-satisfied "man-child".
Although... I still like the song.
damn right!

I hate to do this....but I am bumping my comment from 6 years ago. Meeting Les was a moment in time that I will never forget.
In 1984 I was checking into the Holiday Inn in downtown Cleveland.Behind me was a huge black man with luggage and some music equipment.I asked the front desk if they had a workout room cause I brought my workout clothes. The man behind me asked if I played tennis...and I said yes,but I don't have a racquet with me.He said he did,and he'd like to volley with me early the next morning. That particular Holiday Inn has a tennis court on the roof. That evening while walking the halls I ran into the man and said "I didn't catch your name."He said" it's Les McCann".I said "are you a musician Les" and he said he plays piano. He invited me into his room(filled with the sweet aroma of pot)where he showed me a painting he was working on of a recent rainstorm that just came off of Lake Erie. What a great gentleman. We spoke for about an hour on music and life. This is the first time I've heard his music. No he wasn't very good at tennis.

That's like the 32nd question I would've asked you about that encounter. "Oh, he didn't play tennis well? Ta hell with Les!"

I never heard the Roberta Flack version that preceeded the wonderful Les McCann/Eddie Harris from Montreux, but none of the other covers afterwards have touched what Les and Eddie created here. I first ran across this record when a freshman in college in 1972, when someone else's good ears suggested I listen. I loved it then and still do over 40 years later. Thank you for the grin on my face.

Seriously, that's a cool story. He absolutely cooks on this track—hell, they all do. When I first heard this on a Boston station—WGBH, perhaps—I called the station and the DJ answered while the song was playing. Eric Jackson of "Eric in the Evening" (still going strong AFAIK) was very gracious while I asked what the name of the song was and babbled in general.
I bought the LP soon after. I regret not digging into Les' and Eddies careers more deeply. One for the to-do list.
Next thing I know Uli is an angel handing me the keys, how about public library ?
city fathers always trying to remain calm, I guess they'll close an eye to stunts.
And oh yeah, he totally rocked it!
the buzz feels so real
Can you imagine being able to play like this?
damn that's good!
AGREED! If you can't get part of your body moving on this one, well lol personal problem! feet twitching time to dance!
Thanks Radio Paradise!

That compilation also had a really nice, melodic, accessible jazz piece called Hard Times by David 'Fathead' Newman (youtube link) that I have not forgotten. I would recommend it for RP if I dared.
Upload it! Give it a shot. If Bill and Rebecca don't like it, their loss.

Wow, Bill, still pushing that segue from this into Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? Dear God, no, please.
