My pappy said, "Son, you're gonna' drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop
drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln."

Have you heard this story of the Hot Rod
Race
When Fords and Lincolns was settin' the pace.
That story is true,
I'm here to say
I was drivin' that Model A.

It's got a Lincoln motor
and it's really souped up.
That Model A Vitimix makes it look like a
pup.
It's got eight cylinders; uses them all.
It's got overdrive, just
won't stall.

With a 4-barrel carb and a dual exhaust,
With 4.11 gears
you can really get lost.
It's got safety tubes, but I ain't scared.
The
brakes are good, tires fair.

Pulled out of San Pedro late one
night
The moon and the stars was shinin' bright.
We was drivin' up
Grapevine Hill
Passing cars like they was standing still.

All of a
sudden in a wink of an eye
A Cadillac sedan passed us by.
I said, "Boys,
that's a mark for me!"
By then the taillight was all you could
see.

Now the fellas was ribbin' me for bein' behind,
So I thought I'd
make the Lincoln unwind.
Took my foot off the gas and man alive,

I
shoved it on down into overdrive.

Wound it up to a hundred-and-ten
My
speedometer said that I hit top end.
My foot was blue, like lead to the
floor.
That's all there is and there ain't no more.

Now the boys all
thought I'd lost my sense
And telephone poles looked like a picket
fence.
They said, "Slow down! I see spots!
The lines on the road just
look like dots."

Took a corner; sideswiped a truck,
Crossed my
fingers just for luck.
My fenders was clickin' the guardrail posts.
The
guy beside me was white as a ghost.

Smoke was comin' from out of the
back
When I started to gain on that Cadillac.
Knew I could catch him, I
thought I could pass.
Don't you know by then we'd be low on gas?

We
had flames comin' from out of the side.
Feel the tension. Man! What a
ride!
I said, "Look out, boys, I've got a license to fly!"
And that Caddy
pulled over and let us by.

Now all of a sudden she started to
knockin',
And down in the dips she started to rockin'.
I looked in my
mirror; a red light was blinkin'
The cops was after my Hot Rod
Lincoln!

They arrested me and they put me in jail.
And called my
pappy to throw my bail.
And he said, "Son, you're gonna' drive me to
drinkin'
If you don't stop drivin' that Hot... Rod... Lincoln!"

Don't forget Bill Kirchen, THE sound behind the band!

OK, so I liked my own comment. It's still true!

My old Fluids professor at RPI, John Tichy, is the lead guitar on this.  They were touring with the Grateful Dead while he was getting his Ph.D. in Tribology at University of Michigan.

He's a good fluids professor.

That's great!

What a great tune!
I didn't know Nicolette Larson was in this band. Pre-Neil Young?
Rest in peace, George "Commander Cody" Frayne.
..brakes are good, tires fair.
What is this?!!
Saw them in the late 70's with David Bromberg  at Lisner, great fun.
Beat me, Daddy, eight to the bar!

Ha, I totally made the same connection. Glad I found a comment 17 years old referencing the similarity to A boynamed Sue. And, once I lookup up that song on wikipedia, found that the original song isn't even from Johnny Cash

If you're going to spend any real Q-time in the Ozone, you simply cannot understate the importance of good fluids.
Another blast from the past this evening! Love it!

Yet, thanks to the intercession of another professional grifter, he's out way in advance of that schedule!
This is totally taking my mind off of some serious shit right now
Surprised that Matthew McConaughey doesn't quote from this in some TV commercial.

It was played last night on WCKG here in Chicago by Steve Dahl---a little mini shout-out to Gov. Rod Blagojevich's re-election. Too bad you missed it down in Austin. You're just going to have to beg RP a little harder.

Would to hear this again. Like it in early 70s when I got out of nam.  May but it.

From this old vet to another, thanks for your service to our country. I still have this one on vinyl.
This goes out to Leonard C
I remember when this was on the radio all the time. Still makes me laugh.
best
Oh man, I  was 10 when this came out, not sure I've heard it since then. THANKS!
Great fun - traveling music!  Remember driving through UTAH in my 1963 ford econoline van (3 on the tree) singing along to this song.   Good memories.
Best road trip song EVER!
The Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise is this weekend in Detroit. Gonna see a whole bunch of hot rods -- Lincolns and otherwise!
A blast from my past!

That was freakin' awesome!!! {#Music}
Aww, man! I haven't heard this song for YEARS!!! One of my favorites since 9th grade. Thanks Bill and Rebecca!

{#Bananajam}
Wow!!!  PSD to this. Blast from the past!  First ever for this to my ears here at RP.

My senior year B.U. roommate went NUTS over Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen.  He could recite these lyrics like a machine!
Would to hear this again. Like it in early 70s when I got out of nam.  May but it.

I'd love to hear either of these versions in the main stream.

Ahhhh, my dearly departed brother used to play CC a lot and I love them. Anybody else remember his song with the line "ain't no such thing as having too much fun"?
You thinking of a song that I think was called "Too Much Fun"? Something like Must be a whole lot of things I ain't never done Cuz I ain't never had too much fun. . . .
I believe Commander Cody's isn't the original (at least according to this): (click here)

This is a promising set....I wonder if any Charlie Daniels is on the way....
I would welcome that! Classic tune and most excellent.
Whoa, I didn't realize this was the original. I have heard Bill Kirchen and Too Much Fun play this tune here in Virginia. It turns out that that the guitarist Bill Kirchen was in the original Commander Cody band when they recorded this tune. I think RP would definitely enjoy hearing some Bill Kirchen. Anyone else heard of him?
I did wear out this single back in the day. Too much fun - try singing along with it! Proof that RP is the world's best radio station.
This is a promising set....I wonder if any Charlie Daniels is on the way....
no one could ever touch this version...
Car Talk will return in a moment with a new puzzler...

Vrrroooooooommmmm! Can't beat the Commander! A 10!
Gonna drive me to drinkin'!
The very first record I ever purchased. A 45 single of this song. Damn. I think I was in third grade.
Slightly off topic, but: It IS possible to have too much fun; however, too much fun is still NOT enough. Antigone wrote:

Brings back fond memories of being a kid and playing this 45 over and over (and over) again on my sister's turntable. Wouldn't play it that much now :D but I still enjoy it
A boy called Sue...
Love that redneck guitar.
PLUEEEEZE play Cake\'s Stickshifts and Safetybelts along with this song! The similarities are striking.
Hooray!
Cool Tune!!
