Ditto!! This one's a firm 8 to me.
And THANKS to that other wacky duo, BnR!!
LLRP
*EDIT to say William and Alanna as the wacky duo at RP helm now, LLRP even more!*
Agree with many others. Not amazing but, a hook for sure.

Oh dear.  I enjoyed that.  But then, I liked Sparks when I was a young 'un.  I need a lie down.

or a shot of whatever she's having...

Credit to Bill for not playing it safe during fundraising time. :-) As we know, radio stations that have to fund raise have certain music they play during those times. I'm pretty sure no other station ever played this song when they were courting the masses.

Looking at the dates on the comments, it spent about 12 years on the shelf but was dusted off a year ago.
This is kind of kooky. In a good way.
this is one of those songs where you go to the playlist to see "who is this"??
She's drunk, right?

Reminds me a bit of Throwing Muses and Leah Andreone - thanks for this, Bill.

When I heard the voice, I immediately thought of Ms. Andreone, although I think (just based on this one song) Fleming is playing around on purpose whereas Leah just has that hitch in her delivery. I enjoyed Leah's one big album, though it's been years since I've listened to it.

Also, I don't recall ever hearing this on here. There are a ton of comments, many disparaging. I kind of dug it.
I'm so shocked to hear Fleming & John on RP! Not their best but better than nothing.

PLEASE check out "Comfortable" from their follow-up album. ASTOUNDING song!

If you want it more annoying, just listen to it while reading negative comments about how annoying it is!

LOL - don't take me (too) seriously...I get why it's got a sub-6 rating currently, the vocal delivery is not for everyone, though I'm liking the instrumentation and beat so I'll go with a 7 and say Long Live RP!!
I don't think this song could possibly be any more annoying!

One of the few times CTM and I might agree, but I gave it an 8!
Album cover gives a good indication of the singer's vocal style, doesn't it? Just what I would expect her to look like! Not sure what I think about the song. It got my attention, but...
I usually only stop working to come make a comment if it's a song I really like.......but in this case.... That song is whiny and repetative, IMHO. I see I gave it a "Sucko-barfo" on a previous listen.
delusions of grandeur indeed....

This is certainly a contender... but that's a tall order...
I don't understand the hatred that has been exhibited over this song. The lyrics must be poignant to some.

Nope, still sucko-barfo. I don't know why, but I'm almost feeling actual pain when listening to this. It must be that voice.
Agree! Agree!
worst song i have ever heard on RP.
The subject matter in this song reminds me of an acquaintence that graduated from Devry then got a job paying $55k (in 1998, not bad). That guy just could not get over himself. Needless to say, I avoided him from that point on.

I can't believe that I walk away for a minute and skip one of my favorite bands! Fleming WAS vocally trained, opera actually. She attended Belmont University, a renowned school of music in downtown Nashville, and received an award from there in 2000. Her husband John usually plays all of the instruments on their albums, at least this one. They are excellent in concert! They are great friends with Ben Folds and co-wrote a song called "Ugly Girl," which I found when doing karaoke of all things. When I first heard them, my co-worker had loaned me the CD and I was listening at work. I had to stop what I was doing and just listen. I was so blown away!
Pretty much agree with previous posts - my first reaction was that they should have fired whomever came up with that cover - kinda creepy. Kind of like the song, though, which is what it should be about.
Ok, I guess that is photoshop. But she does have some crazy bouncy curls.... (click here)

Well said! Permission to quote this as my RP sig?
I like weird songs...but not this one.
This song is as ridiculous as the album cover.
wierd... i dont know if i like it, but it has my interest for sure

You know, she could work on her voice and the overall sound of this atrocious act, but you can't polish a TURD.

if it was creepier and not so self-helpy with the lyrics I would like it more. the album cover definitely DOES NOT help their image! scary photoshop stuff!
Please make it stop!
I read through some of the comments about this song. If they only played what everyone agreed was good, it would be a very short list of songs we'd get to hear, and not very interesting. Might as well listen to top 40 radio then. I liked it. I say keep playing new and different stuff, even if it offends some people.

Into the edges of obscurity. I'm impressed by both the upload, (compliments to the astute listener,) and to our host who saw fit to add it to the play list...much thanks
Well, that's what happens when you stick a fork in a light socket.
NOW that IS different- what record exec lost his job on this act! MIND- blow- eeen!! That's why I cant stop listening to RP- good, bad, or ugly- NEVER BORING! But Bill- I LIKE IT- keep it!

A little too yodel-y for my tastes. Next!
Still blown away by how much this song sucks.
Owww, my ears. Will this be my first sucko-barfo on RP? Let's wait until it's finished... OK, let's bring out the smiley:
Oh yes... I call it imagination.... wait a minute, she sounds like a hussy.

You should hear their version of "Winter Wonderland" (yes, the Christmas carol) which is set to the tune of "Misty Mountain Hop." The melding of Zep and Christmas carol is kind of weird, but artistically speaking they completely NAIL the tune.

What Steven_G said. I've heard lots of good reviews of this album. A little freaky, but cool, and I love the concept of this song (the obsession with fame). I'm giving this song (and album) a 9 . . .
C'mon... it's not that bad. It's modal and a little creepy, which can't be all bad.
I'd rather listen to monkeys at the zoo...
Joan Osbourne on Acid...freaking me out man
Annoying.
The style is getting in the way of the substance...
in a negative scale: -10
Sounds like acupuncture for the eardrum to me

Maybe Ani owes these guys a royalty. This album predates "Little Plastic Castle" by two years. Besides which, maybe I'm blind but I'm not really seeing the similarity other than basic color scheme.
Good catch. Thanks. The font struck me as pretty similar too, though I didn't have the album in front of me when I made the comment.

One of those situations that the picture on the album cover exactly matches the voice. I didn't think it was that bad.

Just disappointed that this exists.
how ANYONE let alone 13 people! consider this song a 10 escapes me. Among the very few 1's I have rated, and deserving of the delete key on the server!
most slanting - but not bad anyway!

possibly the worst song on rp.
every time i hear this song my rating goes up, started at a 4, it just hit 8.

A classic that spans the generations! I bought this CD a few months ago for myself and loved it. I came of age during the 1970's and it reminded me of Led Zeppelin and the other "power guitar" bands of the period. If you miss that sound, and remember the days before "coffeehouse rock" when you didn't need coffee with your rock to stay awake, you'll love this CD. I won't repeat what others have said about the lead female's (Fleming's) voice. Its a wonder to listen to. She's a national treasure. Now recently I bought this CD for a teenager in the Sunday school in my church. She loved it and her mother did too! This is music that two generations can unite over. Also, it's totally family friendly. The songs are powerful and contain positive messages. And, none of these token "artistic" obscenities that so many recording artists can't seem to make a record without these days. Great stuff!! My only "gripe" is that these two have only two CDs out! Click here for other reviews and samples from the album.
As I listened to this, my hair looked like the girl on the album cover. And my hair is SHORT. That's not a good thin g.
One of those songs I'm going to have to hear it again to decide if I love it or hate it.
Didn't know these guys got any attention outside the Southeast! There are better cuts on this album (and the original cover art is far more appealing), but it's good to hear anything off it. Nice people, too.
This is another one of those songs that is only fun once in a while. I like the flexibility of the singer's voice.
I guess you either love or hate her voice. I'm diggin' it.
I didn't really like this song at first but I've found it growing on me and actually humming the chorus
Brutal.
Turn this off. Please. Don't you have a crying baby tape you could play or something?
Her voice is excruciating ...especially in that horrendous chorus.
grand

I know, I know, music enjoyment is subjective, but honestly, this song makes me want to punch both the writer and the singer for her interpretation of it (assuming they are not the same person). Truly awful.
Could be my theme song ...
thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou Bill for playing Fleming & John! They are AWESOME! I saw them a couple years ago, so they're still around, as far as I know. Sometimes, I sing karaoke and some outfits have Ugly Girl. It's always fun:) Anyway, these two are innovative.
Once I heard this I knew I had to click over here and read the range of comments. I wasn't disappointed. It's not exactly beautiful but its certainly unique and that almost always always scores highly in my book. It portrays a particular mood (self-assured lunacy?) that you encounter in people sometimes and I'm all for songs that can capture unique slices of emotion.
oh my!!! i eventually had to turn the volume down! That was painful.........thankfully keane was to follow that wavering drivel.
Strange, yet good.
If I'm in the mood for this song, it's great. Otherwise... *shudder*.
What ever happened to Fleming and John? I loved hearing her vocal gymnastics.

Rather. So she can flip her voice an octave or so - does she have to do it in public?

Very good. Puts Natalie Merchant to shame. Now, how about some Nellie McKay?
I like it.
Unique sound, talented vocalist. Surprised it's almost 10 years old.
Sounds like one of my co-workers whining incessantly about her job. I can hear her voice all over the building.
