It's hard to listen to a hard, hard heart
Beating close to mine
Pounding up against the stone and steel
Walls that I won't climb
Sometimes a hurt is so deep, deep, deep
You think that you're going to drown
Sometimes all I can do is weep, weep, weep
With all this rain falling down
Strange how hard it rains now
Rows and rows of big dark clouds
When I'm holding on underneath this shroud
Rain
It's hard to know when to give up the fight
Some things you want will just never be right
It's never rained like it has tonight
Before
Now I don't want to beg you, baby
For something maybe you could never give
I'm not looking for the rest of your life
I just want another chance to live
Strange how hard it rains now
Rows and rows of big dark clouds
When I'm holding on underneath this shroud
Rain
Strange how hard it rains now
Rows and rows of big dark clouds
When I'm holding on underneath this shroud
Rain
Strange how hard it rains now
Rows and rows of big dark clouds
Well I'm still alive underneath this shroud
Rain
Rain
Rain
Beating close to mine
Pounding up against the stone and steel
Walls that I won't climb
Sometimes a hurt is so deep, deep, deep
You think that you're going to drown
Sometimes all I can do is weep, weep, weep

Patty Griffin is alright, but I really do not like this song, sounds like Taylor Swift or Faith Hill or some other pop-country tart.

I agree, but want to add this is the best way to keep music you love alive. Seek out bands at smaller venues and you may find it a more pleasing experience. Less pointing the mike out for the audience to sing, less adulation for every gesture, more effort to make it their best performance to date. I have kind of given up on the big venue shows, but still find these newer or smaller shows immensely satisfying.

Her new CD is released today (1/26/10). I hope to hear some cuts on RP soon.
The local newspaper (Austin American Statesman) gave it a sort of lukewarm recommendation. I haven't heard anything from it yet so will hold off before buying - but I probably will eventually.
Beautiful...this is what fine music is all about.

An absolutely accurate and heartbreaking account of what it's like to live with someone you love who is plagued by depression.

First time hearing that. Think I'll hit the rewind button and listen to that one again. Very nice.
*edit* never mind. that was a different song!

'I can see her lyin back in her satin dress, in a room where ya do what ya dont confess'

As much as I love Patty Griffin's music I have to admit Neko Case has been overtaking her lately in the most-impressive-female-musician battle. And that Jesse Sykes is in the running as well.

So poignant and evocative.
Yes this is very good.
Sublime!
One of my "10's"
Patty is a Goddess in my eyes. It's no wonder so many artists have covered her music.

After that big voice, her little-girl 'Thank You' at the end slays me. What a woman.

PG is consistently very good, thanks RP!

Not sure about this Sykes person, but he's probably right on the Neko... based on the latest releases from each, the Advantage is definitely on Neko's side.

I've become a PG fan since listening to RP, and I can't necessarily defend this statement because I don't know why it is so, but I can't stand this song. To manipulative of emotion I guess. I just don't feel it. And don't call me Mr. Spock please.
Ed: Nah--I think it's OK. I just had it associated with a really sappy and annoying TV commercial that plays here. It's not the artist it's the ad.
This song gives me chills. This line always stops me in my tracks:
"Now I don't wanna beg you baby
For something maybe you could never give
I'm not looking for the rest of your life
I just want another chance to live"
Great songwriting AND a great voice. Stellar.
c.
saw her play in chapel hill a few years ago and it was incredible. hard to believe that such a powerful voice can come out of such a tiny lady!
soulful, beautiful. good to hear a woman singing her heart out once again...but then, I grew up listening to Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro, so.

Hard to go wrong with any of them, but 1000 Kisses is my favorite. Try this list--see which has the most songs you like on it and start there!
I was at the concert at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville that was recorded for this album. I never go to concerts because audiences can suck sometimes, so the drunk/stoned guy sitting next to me who kept singing along with every song and eventually was thrown out kinda ruined much of the enjoyment (I eventually moved to stand in the aisle), but otherwise an amazing show. Emmylou Harris and the Millers participated at various points. Great great concert.

She can't seem to put out a bad album. I've seen her twice here in Austin, once at the 2nd Austin City Limits Music Festival and then a few years later at Stubbs in Austin....right up front. I love her voice. So powerful and real.
You know, one of the great things about RP is that its listeners like Patty Griffin. It's nice to know that she has so many fans.

Her voice is excellent live - seen her twice in her home-town state. Thanks RP for turning me on to her.

First Annie Lennox' version, now Patty's. Thanks, RP!

Heres my girl patty!
thanx bill
Lovely
I think I like this live version even more than the album version.
I love this woman, she totally speaks to me, and has the way with words that leads me to thinking 'how does she know how I feel?'
Just as good live as recorded ... no surprises there ...
Thank you for this! I love love love this song!
"Sometimes the hurt is so deep, you think that you're gunna drownd."
... ...
......
suck-o-barfo
There is no way I can possibly do anything but listen with my whole being when this song is playing.
This is why I can never play any of Patty's albums during the work day. I'd never get anything done!
To the chorus of praise I shall add. Patty is the real deal.
Sometimes you hear a song at exactly the right time...this is a good song for that. Thanks Bill.
This song put me over the edge and helped me find the courage to divorce out of a really bad situation. I heard this, had to pull over on the side of the road and just weep.
Her music is very personal and touching, but this song in particular will always have a special place in my heart.
Sing on Patty....

See her live, she is even more amazing
Love this song. But why isn't RP playing her "Making Pies," or "Top of the World?"
This is the kind of song that you click on hoping that you hadn't already rated it a '10' but find out that you already have.
If you haven't seen her live, do so.
Edit: Just got this album as a Christmas present. Truly a phenomenal album from a superb artist.
this song kills me
Patty Griffin is the artist you want to come to your house to sing and play guitar. In my humble opinion, her level of quality and consistency over the last four albums (five if you count the unreleased Silver Bell) make her the best songwriter in America today. "Rain" is just one example of her incredible range that takes her from rock to folk to gospel-like.
I joyfully jump on the train of Patty Griffin fans. This song is amazing and her rendition is not lacking in talent or passion. I wish someone would help me hear this when I'm going from this life.
I think Patty Griffin is amazing, and I love this song. A terrific stylist and an a great writer. Someone called her pretentious. Not sure what's supposed to constitute pretention, but in concert she's extremely gracious and shy, very charming. Bubba likes it.

whiny and nasal.

Love, love, love her music. Patty can do no wrong in my book.

Shew! Im not the only one! Those are my exact sentiments in regards to Patty.
I was worried that there was something wrong with me :).
I can sit and weep at this whole album, given the chance.
The more I hear of Patty the more I like her.
I don't always like Patty Griffin, but this is on my list of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
She just leaves me speechless. Like, I hear her voice and I don't know what to say because she gives so much every time a note comes out.
This is the first Patty song I ever heard. What a great introduction to her work.

Well, it's good to know she has this effect on a LOT of people--men and women alike. Although I am getting a little more desensitized to "Makin' Pies." Saw her live last month, and she was in extra-high spirits.

If you follow her career, this resembles the Flaming Red sound a bit more. Definitely a unique voice.
How can you compare with those women with the trepidation in her tremolo?
Her soul is going along for the ride on this one.
Breathless emotion and finale.
