I can’t help but feel that those who reduced the overall rating of this gem to 6.2 are missing something
Already going from 5.8 to 5.9, let the dead idol upping begin.
Who says Leonard never sang... Enjoying all the tributes over the last 2 days...
RIP Leonard. What a Canadian Treasure hew will always be !!!
Ah, St. Leonard...thanks for your soul and spirit.
very interesting too, the cover of this song* (performing live in spanish) carried out for singer and composer Perla Batalla...from Los Angeles, CA; shes apear too in a movie "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man" (2005), as well as other notables artists, as Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, The Handsome Family, Beth Orton, Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompson, Linda Thompson, Antony, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Bono, Laurie Anderson, Julie Christensen.
* Bird On The Wire: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen (2005)

it's one of the best lovesongs ever! romantic ,it's one of my wife's favourite, she says it's a story about two people that still love eachother after a lifetime.

I suddendly feel like I'm at a wedding, someone's uncle has grabbed the mic, and it is now time to go outside.
I'd rather hear that same uncle sing the Hokey Pokey instead of this.

Cohen is a poet like Dylan, Tom Waits, Neil Young...he doesn't have to sound pretty...the words are all the expression necessary...the music is just a color backgound for the words he paints. You probably wouldn't dance to Cohen but he throws out some neat imagery.
It's not that I dislike Cohen (or the others you mentioned) as an artist. I simply do not care for this song/this version. Period.
Sublime.
Peggy Lee's Is That All There Is would be a perfect follow up!
Speaking of good old Leonard..............
Just returned from Toronto Canada and there's a bit of a buzz about this guy who sounds quite a bit like Leonard Cohen but has his own distinct style.
Catman Cohen
https://www.cdbaby.com/catmancohen
Nobody seems to know much about the guy since he kind of came out of nowhere and refuses to provide pictures to the Media. He writes in metaphor like Leonard and has a voice deeper than anything you've ever heard before.
One producer friend told me he'd heard the guy is actually a good looking,
16 year old, music prodigy/tech whiz-kid pretending to be an older man.
Exactly so.

I've always felt this way about Radiohead.
And a second to Madeleine Peyroux. She has a great CD out there right now.

Yea, but if you could follow it with Madeline Peyroux's version.. it'd melt your socks off!
:D/
I don't get it

AARRGGHHHH.... horrible.
I am turning off RP!
Ear pain!!! Ear pain!!!
Pearls before........??

I'd like to hear a William Shatner cover of this one...
Actually, now that I say that, Doesn't Leonard Cohen actually look and sound a little like Leonard Nimoy? Weird.
Ok. Really now. This whole "Leonard Cohen thing" is just a big joke, right? He isn't really universally loved by all eclectic RP fans, is he? Is this just an inside joke, like: "Ok, everyone. Here is how we will really fool those outsiders who think that they are cool. We will put up these stinky artists like Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake, and we will all rave about them on the song forums when they are played, but only WE will know the truth that they really suck!!"
Come on. Admit it. This is just a big insider RP joke, right?
My sentiments exactly....what the hell is that supposed to be?

I don't care if this is Leonard Cohen. It Sucks!
One of the most overrated artists of all time? Possibly.
I don't understand not liking this or any other Leonard Cohen song
I gave it a 10 Cohen is a genius
I don't care if this is Leonard Cohen. It Sucks!
I'm seeing a bouncing ball over the lyrics.
OK....... Leonard's vocals are......unique. Check out another unique vocal approach to this song by Madeleine Peyroux. It's much more.....musical.
this is "formative" leonard cohen.
the coolest stuff is what he's done in the last ten years.
now that he's older, he sounds more mature and less cornball!

1.Put DOWN the remote.
2.Go outside.
3.Inhale deeply.
4.Repeat.

What an odd smattering of negativity. That one was quite good.
This is soooo boring. And a little flat. I came on to rate it a 1, but I guess I already did that the last time RP played it.
Ugh
Why would such a fine readio station wish to play this music without merit?
Damn, this is some tedious shit.

(wipes tears)..... Boy, I needed that......
Blech.......
It is rare for me to actively dislike something I hear on RP, but I can't stand this. I like Edith Piaf, but this is no Piaf.
:-p
A 45 played at 33 1/3.
Ow ow ow ow ow!
What is this dreck?
I just watched the music video of this song. Someone posted it in a forum. The video is starring Quentin Tarantino. It is nicely done.
Boris Karloff's Greatest Polka hits!
Dear God, please don't play this ever again.
There's a cover of this on the Strange Days soundtrack. I don't remember the artist, but it's not bad. A little FYI tidbit...

Ditto. Makes one drop everything and simply listen.
I love love love this song! "Dance me to the children who are asking to be born" . . . yes, Famous Blue Raincoat is heartbreaking, but so is this. Thank you for playing such an obscure beauty.

I wouldn't describe Cohen's voice as weak...it is a genre of torch song singing in the vein of Edith Piaf or Serge Gainsbourg...
Though I'm not familiar with Serge Gainsbourg, I agree with the comparison to Edith Piaf. Very good call Talalala!
I wouldn't describe Cohen's voice as weak...it is a genre of torch song singing in the vein of Edith Piaf or Serge Gainsbourg... I find this song romantic, yet melancholy... I imagine drunk friends leaning against each other smoking and singing loudly....
I'd recommend his poetry....it is very imaginative, touching, yet sometimes edgy..

I'm number 7. His music just doesn't do a thing for me. His singing is pretty weak (but there are other weak singers I like) and the music is rather mundane (but there is other mundane music I like). Dunno why, but Leonard's combination of the above just doesn't speak to me.
For some reason this particular song reminds me of Mitch Miller on Quaaludes.
Not within several miles of his best.
I'm not a big fan either, but enjoy hearing this so I have perspective when others rave.
This sounds like it could be found on a Sid & Marty Krofft soundtrack.

I'm one of those who doesn't like Leonard Cohen (seems there are 5 of us now) ---> find his vocals are droning and monotonous. But then, of course, music is fascinating ---> Tom Waits was played a few tracks ago, and I love his voice, but others would say the same thing about Waits' voice as I've said about Cohen's. Go figure.
I guess the moral to the story is: "Long live Radio Paradise!"
