It's a cover. Robby Krieger borrowed the intro from "Asturias" when he composed "Spanish Caravan".
"Robby Krieger told Rainier Moddemann of The Doors Quarterly that the band was sued for borrowing from a traditional Spanish song with "Spanish Caravan." The Doors were forced to give up some money, but only a little. Krieger explained, 'They didn't get very much, 'cause it's such a widely known thing, but they claimed they owned this little something stupid.'"
His actual new age stuff was better than this, of course. "Hummingbird" is an excellent "wind down" song.
Yes! This is Albeniz originally, not the Doors.
But shows how great the Doors were...
I'll mostly agree w/ you, coding_to_music - with the slight modification of "this is good" to "this is ho-hum at best"
The Doors were (are?) great!
I am slightly intrigued by the album title "night divides the day" - does Mr. Winston "cover" other Doors' songs too, like "Break on Through (to the Other Side)? (*Edit: answered my own question by looking at the subtitle of the album which clearly says "Night Divides the Day: Music of the Doors" - so I'll give GW (LOL) props for that.
3 = Ho Hum = my rating on this track. Thanks for playing it though, BillG - some of the RPs must like it since it has an avg rating of 6.5... huh. smh
and you'll never be able to listen to this guy again. Promise!
A clown? He does seem to play with inappropriate flourish...on this piece.
and you'll never be able to listen to this guy again. Promise!
Absolutely brilliant! Makes you wish you had learned to play piano as a child...
I did. Makes me wish I hadn't heard this.
But shows how great the Doors were...
PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!!
That is the best description of this song I've read here.

The person you are referring to indicates he is from Bangkok. So your bigotry is misdirected.
Why can't we all just get along?

My question makes you think about a dog licking his nutz huh? (..preconceived notion of Texans confirmed. check).

More like Rohypnol.

most definitely not my cup of riojas...
He also plays a mean guitar and harmonica!

....and why does a dog lick his balls...? Because he can.
Said one Aggie to the other, "Don't you wish you could do that?"
Second Aggie replies, "Yeah, that would be so fine. I'd try it, but I'm afraid he'd bite me."
....and why does a dog lick his balls...? Because he can.
Oddly, I much prefer the Doors' version and generally am not crazy about George Winston, but this is OK.
In fact, not to offend the naysayers, but I'm beginning to appreciate this version, although it is a bit long.
He can play well enough, but why?
Why?
why not?
He can play well enough, but why?
Why?
A whole CD though, covering music of the Doors? I'd be interested in hearing someone's opinion on "why the hell should he bother". The attempt seems more prone to criticism from both his fans and fans of the original artist. So why do it?

Why do it?.....he was having a slow afternoon...nothing on the tv...or maybe he was high.
I conclude that you either work in a dentist's office or have a small desk in an elevator.
In any case, please enjoy this music recorded sound in private and don't encourage Bill to play this god damned abomination.
Interesting. I hope you're both seeking psychiatric help.
Faking? As in "pretending" to play the notes? My perception is that he is a very creative and talented pianist. I'm a Doors fan AND I own a Winston boxed set. Great stuff when you're not in the mood for Major/Minor.
I'm with you. I cannot fathom all of these negative comments about poor old George.
Oh, come on, now...that's just silly.
I don't really care for it either, but I'd hardly call it "amateurish".
Yeah, then puke on heavens door.
Yes, his recent stuff isn't so good, but his "Autumn" album from the 70's is one of the best pieces of music in any genre that I've ever heard. Some of his other stuff from that era is also quite good. I've seen him in concert several times and he is a very fine musician indeed.

impressive...
Edit: CD cover says "solo piano"
wow...
7, to balance out the 1's....

im so glad jim don't sings on this one
better listen to Alicia de Larrocha for this fantastic song which is so brutely ruined by the doors
I have only this to add.
The original piece as played by the Doors is a dark passage of pain... The music was inspired by a painting Jim Morrison saw in Spain. It depicted a spanish galleon becalmed in the equatorial Atlantic ocean... in a mad attempt to get more speed from whatever breeze did happen, the painting showed them as they threw all the horses overboard. The lyrics of the original reflect this and I believe it is a masterpiece of darkness... well written and not nearly close to the "over the top"ness of this tripe.
I hear you Oggy, nice point. Winston version of this song is what it is. Nicely played, but ventures into the sacred ground for the traditional Doors fan. I agree with your assesment of the passage being dark. Winston's version is almost too light hearted.
If all of you want a chilling listening experience to play along the lines of Oggy's reference to the spanish galleon and the horses being thrown over board, I highly suggest you check out Celestial Navigations' "Horses", if you do not already know about it. CN features storyteller/actor Geoffrey Lewis, you'll recognize him when you see him n their web site.
I'll not tell you more about "Horses" except it is exactly like the story that Oggy tells above relating to Morrison's expereince viewing the chilling painting of the horses being thrown over board. Despite the sad nature of the story, it is a story of violent retribution that will send a chill down your spine and question your own fortitude to carry out orders and your ability to weld justice in a singlular act of rage!

On their catalog page, you want this one..."Celestial Navigaations - Chapter I", it has "Horses".

"Be sure to leave a light on when you listen to this..."
this is a excelent version of original song Spanish Caravan of the band The Doors, published in album "Waiting For The Sun" (1968)-

bump. cuz this needs to be repeated over and over until the song digital file is deleted from all hard drives in Paradise, CA.
in fact, this is very unlike me but I'm calling for a boycott of donations to RP until Bill promises to stop playing this mess. It's such an insult to the original work and the original artist generally.
yeah, music inspires strong feelings. That's good. I don't mean this music recording of arbitrary sounds, btw. I mean the Doors

I think you're referring to Horse Latitudes, on their second album.
Eye-rollingly lame in its muzak-iness, but also oddly comforting in its familiarity.
Not a Winston fan...
Didn't smoke 'em either!
