I think "guero canelo" refers to a ginger, or red-haired person

I was looking for the same thing... The Babel Fish is not very helpful: "guero canelo" = "gÃŒero cinnamon-coloured" (sic)

It translates loosely as "Cinnamon whitey". I'm not sure if it is a direct reference to the South Tucson Sonoran hot dog spot of the same name, but that place is so named because the owner, while from Mexico, is white and red-haired.
Thank you RP, for introducing me to these guys - several years ago now - when they're good, they are GOOD.
badazzz. love these cats
Great song, a real show-stopper in concert.
Would be nice without the ridiculous computer generated voicing....

Rearrange a verse of Stun God of humbug.
Guns 'N' Robes, a Base Born Snug.
Here comes G.l..o.. 'n' sister Rhea,
Here comes The Three Kings with a gift,
A kissing bug, and a gift of gab.

         Paying homage in dome.
This song is driving my dog NUTS.

Ugh...I'm with you.  I like it a lot until the Muppet-voice starts.

Nice!

When the guitar started playing, it reminded me of Secret Agent Man

I'll just put this right here: https://www.elguerocanelo.com/index2.html  Get the Sammy Dog.

There is a scene in the movie "Collateral" where a petrified Jamie Foxx, a taxi driver, is walking through a club, pretending to be Tom Cruise's character, a stone killer. In the background, Calexico is on stage playing "Güero Canelo" from "Feast of Wire." It's a freaking brilliant scene, primarily because of the dark & eerie mood set by the song. However, the effect is heightened by the lyrical content - "Güero Canelo" is a hyperbolic recap of the stereotypical inner city Latino lifestyle (sex, drugs, fighting, cars, machismo). I think Calexico are an underrated genius team. . .

  You sir....are correct!

my dog is named "Canela" they said it meant cinnamon. She's a brown chihuahua. Guero means white dude, right?
So, I'm thinking a brown (or tan) white man.

true - but it could be a restaurant in S. Tucson? - apparently quite a popular expanded taco stand - and a place where the lyrics of this song would make some sense - a lot more than cinnamon colored.

We just flew out to Tucson for the Calexico Flor de Muertos concert and the next day checked out this place - best Sonoran hot dog in town we are told.

Best band in the world in my opinion.  I hope they don't catch on too much though, ya know? . . . .

hahaha gotta love those automatic translators {#Lol}

I'm btw hablante nativa but still don't quite get it... appart from knowing that it's the name of a bar/eating place?{#Smile}

But especially güero is a Mexican word,
I'm from the other side of the ocean...
At this side, canelo means, among many other things, silly...

((just seen that güero means blond?, it'd be funny if canelo means the same there as over here hehe {#Wink} but I don't expect so...)

I've got the Panoptica mix of this on my iPod and I haven't got a bloody clue where it came from. Great rhythm tho.

Anyone else think the guy sounds like Gibby Haynes from Butthole Surfers?
Always love it when Bill follows Iron & Wine with Calexico (or vice versa).
...this was the song which bumped me from fascinated curiosity over one or two obscure plays i'd heard of calexico to taking the plunge and buying two of their albums sight unseen - i've added a lot more calexico to my collection since then...

She looks quite pallid. I fear for her health.

I've heard this song so many times and it never crossed my mind that there even were lyrics. I always just thought to myself how much it sounded like a digeridoo lol
the first calexico track i do not find completely banal ... nice!
Now THAT'S a cowbell!
love the cover illustration, is that by Coop?

Speaking of live...just saw them live in Utrecht, Netherlands with Iron & Wine and they were fantastic. This is an incredible band to see live. Amazing energy, mariachi horns, and a huge band (at one point with 13 people onstage). If you have the chance to see Calexico live, I recommend it highly.
One more point than the last song. After all, they are Calexico and Gomez isn't. 7
... Superb lyrics, so cheeky and clever and loaded! ...
The guitar is a ringer for the playing of Marc Ribot on many Tom Waits albums.
