Unfortunately she died in 2011 due to respiratory failure. She was smoking on stage in Berkeley,strictly forbidden but of course no one cared. Such a lovely voice. Died at age 70

She is wonderful! She was in Moscow with concert.
It's good...and really does make the whole "nostalgic longing" thing resonate for me. I love it here, but I do miss each and every thing I've loved, all over the world, and I miss each and every one of my adventures. It hurts my heart how much I miss the 20 years of life abroad I led. I miss places and things that once seemed such an integral part of the Boulder experience that disappeared during that 10-year stretch I was in Tokyo, 2002-'12. Saudade is a very real vibration, and this song makes me feel how much I'm steeped in it...

I have always enjoyed this song and its thanks to Radio Paradise for introducing me to Cesaria Evora.

1st time I heard this song was by Bonga from his Bonga 74 album, back in 1975ish. You can see Bonga and Cesaria traveled and performed the song together many times. He acquiesced to her version as well. She came to the States and sold out concerts. My Mom and Dad were fortunate enough to see her 06ish(?) in Bean Town (Boston). Tickets were tough to come by.
I prefer the Bonga version, myself. Probably 'cause I heard that one first and was accustomed to it. You'll notice in his version he sings "este nha terra de Cabo Verde" as opposed to Sao Nic'lau. I believe Sao Nic'lau is probably the way the composer wrote it. Since the composer was born there. (According to Wiki).

There is no way to thank her for the great music, the beautiful singing and all the elements of her art, that make us full of emotions and feelings. Hope she is able to look down to us all and realise how much she has influenced our lives! Thank you Mrs. Evora!
