Multicolored microbus
Plowing over rugged terrain
We're jacking the radio
Passing the afternoon train
Around the roses
She showed us hyacinths and sage
Gold-plated garden tools
Sunlamps, and it's all the rage
Stay low to the ground or they'll sniff you out
You never know what you will find
When you go out of the blackness
Into the great big sky
Supercollider
Shooting inside your mind
Gather round the gas tower
Don't it kinda look like a bong?
I heard it backwards
Hidden in a Pink Floyd song
Stella radiata
It's got to set your mind at ease
Spinning on the tire swing
Flying like Tarzan through the trees
And back to the bus when the sun goes down
Try to aim it back into town
We're riding out of the blackness
Into the great big sky
Supercollider
Shooting inside your mind
Supercollider
Shooting inside your mind
And coriander grows along the banks
Where we go walking at night
Creeping slowly over the grounds
We tiptoe round the garden
Trying not to tramp it down
Stay low to the ground or they'll sniff you out
You never know what you will find
When you go out of the blackness
Into the great big sky
Supercollider

Coriander, hyacinth, and sage.
Love this song. It's been years since I heard it.

I'm not too familiar with FOW.
I bet Oasis are.
I bet Oasis are.
Had to change this to a 10!!!!!!! Takes me on a trip!!!!
I was never more happy when our band was submitted for a couple of Grammys (submitted, not nominated). And we were in the list right above FOW (this album)!

The actual Fountains Of Wayne (closed in 2009) was in Wayne, NJ on RT-46 west just before the so-called "spaghetti bowl" where highways Route-46, Route-23 and I-80 all meet in the interchange from hell. My home was just 4 miles away from there for 28 years before retiring and moving way up north. And like rd wrote, they sold lawn ornaments including, of course, fountains. The Bada Bing strip joint on the Sopranos is really Satin Dolls on Route-17 south in Lodi, NJ where they have some really fine young dancers, uh or so I've been told.
I moved up to NJ from Florida (wrong way I know) and my office was just east of that interchange. Imagine how surprised I was to see that this fun band was named after that shop! It was a great little jersey band and this album had lots of little gems other than the hit Stacy's Mom. I was so sad to hear the lead singer died of Covid.

Excellent!!
I'm just looking for Stacy's Mom...
I count myself lucky and blessed to have seen this fabulously talented group play at Shinjuku's Liquid Room not long after this came out...and they were absolutely superb in every way. It was a magical time of my life; I was feeling reborn again in Japan, in the best part of wild and wonderful Tokyo, after the abyssal fracture of divorce and family betrayal made being "home" more painful than being on the other side of the planet... Of course, getting a foothold there and digging in to the extent to be able to enjoy it was a huge challenge -- but thanks to RP and the frequent live acts that came my way while there, I felt incredibly confident, inspired, and capable, and stayed for a full decade, until the Fukushima Disaster -- that no one wants to talk about but is still unfolding, still releasing unimaginable amounts of heat and radiation that are and surely will continue to be deadly. I mourn the loss of Adam Schlesinger, who also made Ivy such a great band, to the COVID-19 pandemic, and I firmly believe that we, thanks to RP, can keep the spirit of his clever, gifted vision alive through the power of music like this! And what a great song this is! It was a favorite of Shoko's and mine. I'm forever grateful that RP can always and forever help to connect me to the Best of Everything!
Robbie Fulks (and FoW) does a hilarious bit, "Fountains of Wayne Hotline"

"Wow, cool -- that sounds kinda like Oasis," said Shoko, the stunner from Okinawa said next to me in bed, as it streamed from RP into my MacBook. "Fountains of Wayne," I said, and she snuggled up tight. "I saw them at Shinjuku Liquid Room just last week," I added. "Take me to see something like that," she said. A few weeks later, I took her to see Eels at Shibuya Club Quattro. She told me it was the most incredible depth of feeling she'd ever experienced. I'm proud of that memory, and proud of how RP was such an integral part of it!

Was just thinking that I haven't heard FoW on RP in what seems like years. And here we are. Weird.
"Sugoi! Daisuki! Oasis, isn't it?" asked Shoko, the stunner from Okinawa next to me in bed, as it streamed from RP through my MacBook. "No, not Oasis... Fountains of Wayne," I replied, and she snuggled up tight. "I saw them at Shinjuku Liquid Room just last week. Amazing show!" I added. "Take me to see something like that," she said. A few weeks later, at the height of our Romance, I took her to see Eels at Shibuya Club Quattro. The entire night was magical. She told me it was the most incredible depth of feelings she'd ever experienced. I'm proud of that memory, and grateful for how RP was such an integral part of it! I miss FoW! And play more Ivy anytime, too!

Funny, I was going to post about the Fountains of Wayne retail location being the source of the bands name and then saw this post. I used to live about twelve miles away form there. I had a GF, for a while, who lived just a few minutes away from "Bada Bing"/Satin Dolls. to make another association -I had a tenant for a while who's uncle played Junior on the Sopranos. I think she got her attitude from that show. :-)

The NFL used one of their brilliant songs. Which isn’t saying much, but it happened.
Be patient with this band, they are deceiving. And very talented.
Sounds like he has the Liam Gallagher Filter on his voice.

I was watching Sopranos re-runs the other night, and Tony went to buy a lawn ornament at a store called "Fountains of Wayne" Turns out it's a real store and the band took their name from it

I don't know if there is a music video for this one, but I've already gotten one written in my mind: the football play, the fans, cheerleaders, the family around the big screen, it's all in super-slow motion, except of course for FOW, singing the song at regular speed on the field amidst the players moving in slow motion around them...

Fine, but what exactly is wrong with his voice? Did he have a cold on the day of the recording?
This song is a good example of why I like FOW so much... it's such a picturesque set of words that it leaves itself open to personal interpretation. Of course the song is just about drug culture, but there's also something so inspiring about the spirit behind "out of the blackness, into the great big sky." It could be the drugs expanding your mind, but it could also be these kids waking up to the larger world.
Ok, there's my over-analysis.

There was this great restaurant next to Fountains of Wayne on route 3, I cannot remember what it was called, but I am pretty sure it is closed down now.

Okay, since we're sharing lyrics, here's one of my favorites from the album, "All Kinds of Time":
The clock's running down
The team's losing ground
To the opposing defense
The young quarterback
Waits for the snap
When suddenly it all starts to make sense
He's got all kinds of time
He's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time
He's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time
He takes a step back
He's under attack
But he knows that no one can touch him now
He seems so at ease
A strange inner peace
Is all that he's feeling somehow
He's got all kinds of time
He's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time
He's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time
He thinks of his mother
He thinks of his bride-to-be
He thinks of his father
His two younger brothers
Gathered around the widescreen TV
He looks to the left
He looks to the right
And there in a golden ray of light
Is his open man
Just as he planned
The whole world is his tonight
I don't know if there is a music video for this one, but I've already gotten one written in my mind: the football play, the fans, cheerleaders, the family around the big screen, it's all in super-slow motion, except of course for FOW, singing the song at regular speed on the field amidst the players moving in slow motion around them...These guys are great. Brilliant, clever, tongue-in-cheek derivative. Totally satisfying. Good boys these.
This is one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands of all time. . . and I am thrilled to hear it on RP.
Good lyrics, but the vocals detract a bit.
Just a lovely, FAT, luscious trippy sound -- a beautiful song by a very clever band. Thanks, Bill, for turning me onto these guys years ago when this came out!

I really think these guys have such a tongue-in-cheek Zappa-esque, Steely Dan-type wise-ass streak in their lyrics, and I admire that immensely.

Gotta agree here. I think these guys are perfectly aware of every sound they borrow, every riff they rip-off. The fact that they do it very well is their real achievement.
I wish I could have heard the Tillbrook.

I can't decide if what you hear in this band is original or actually a "lifting" of some other stuff. I mean, it seems like you've heard this song before, that somebody else wrote it, that your friend mentioned it one time, and that it's not new. But it's okay, nonetheless.
