Every evening
You come around here in your cloak of lies
Half-believing
I sit and listen as you offer up the prize
Pick up your smile
Just go faithless friend
There is no pleasure waiting here for you
Pick up your smile
Just go faithless friend
I don't see you any more as an angel of mercy
Imitations
Of the good life were your stock in trade
Pale imitations
You run for cover when the promise starts to fade
Pick up your smile
Just go faithless friend
There is no treasure waiting here for you
Pick up your smile
Just go faithless friend
I don't see you any more as an angel of mercy
You play the game well
You've got the knack
Your hand in the till
And the knife in the back
Head for the hills
Leaving them flat
How come you treat
Everybody like that?
Spaced invader
Of my privacy be on your way
Tricky trader
In webs of fantasy, the bank is closed today
Pick up your smile
Just go faithless friend
There is no pleasure waiting here for you
Pick up your smile
Just go faithless friend
I don't see you any more as an angel of mercy
Pick up your smile
Just go faithless friend
There is no treasure waiting here for you
Pick up your smile
Just go faithless friend
I don't see you any more
As an angel of mercy
Oh, an angel of mercy
Oh, an angel of mercy

GREAT TUNE! Thanx RP!
Al has the most judgemental songs in popular music, and this is no exception. Doesn't make it any less great of course.

That was awesome. Most timely too. Never heard it before. More unknown/unknowable Al Stewart stuff please!
Strangely me neither. Never knew this album existed. Al Stewart make me remember about an evening with a girlfriend in the basement. :-) That was awesome. Most timely too. Never heard it before. More unknown/unknowable Al Stewart stuff please!

I've literally never heard this...and I like it. Definitively AS, yet different. Nice violin!
Maybe you should just scroll down to your previous comments
I've always thought his voice had an annoyingly shrill quality to it. This song doesn't change that opinion.

Here's one
All those rock and roll heroes you spend your time around,
You may think your one of them but you a hundred thousand down,
You walk like Greta Garbo
But you talk like Yogi Bear,
I have been trying to Find "Modern Times" on CD.

I can kinda here undertones of the Bond them music in the intro/links. Its prett good though.
I caught that too. I didn't decide to register a comment until I heard it
Nice to hear Al Stewart now and then!

this song sucks really bad.
You'll just have to get use to it, like the taste of beer!
oo - time to bop around the room, thank you AS! and what nice strings soaring in the background.
Saw him at a show in Tahoe (brother's wedding-@ 84). Small room, sat right in front after entering 1/2 way through set. Not my type of music-dont even own an AS album/CD.... but still happens to be one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
The solos seem to have a consistency across his stuff, is that him playing them?
I'm glad I heard this song only because now I know where one of my favorite phrases came from!!!
Otherwise a 3. Never liked AS.

Heaven help me, I hate AS.
Well, don't hate him, but find him intensely uninteresting ....
Thank you :sunny.gif: thank you thank you
I've got to get this last album of his. Great to hear more Al Stewart on RP. Anyone got the lyrics to this song?
Nice to hear a little Al Stewart in the mix. Its too bad most people know him by Year of the Cat, some of his lesser known songs are more enjoyable because of the lack of overplay.

Heaven rulez. I love AS. And indeed hearing something besides the standard YotC is great. Thanks!
This guy continue to create great music. Too bad no one plays anything but "Year of The Cat"!

If you'll allow me to answer, it means "there you have it - problem solved".
